I must admit, I do look at Harry Potter in the Choreography category and think "hmmm... is this actually a deserved nomination, or is this just a nomination given for the sake of being given, because it is Harry Potter?" I wonder if the 'choreography' of the illusions is what they were thinking of? After all, they're basically all created by clever use of movement. I always say, the point of awards is to create publicity and get some exposure for theatre in general, and if the most deserving people actually win that's just a happy accident. I feel like the Olivier committee has the same philosophy, the way they've approached the acting categories. Surely the whole cast can't be 'lead'?!

Joanna Riding should've been nominated for best actress on her own, end of story, IMO.
BTW, can someone enlighten me about the 'nominating committee' (how many people are on it, how do they vote/decide who's nominated, etc.) - and is this different to the people who actually pick the winners (again is this done by vote or just a communal discussion around a table)? Thanks!

Well the whole "who is lead" issue has been a thing for years. Like with the Grammy's last year... the official rule of Best Musical Theatre Album (as of 2012) is that the Lead Vocalists are the only performers who receive the award, rather than award the entire cast who feature. But then they decided to give the award to pretty much anyone who sang one line in Hamilton (Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos & Phillipa Soo). Whereas with, for example, The Book of Mormon, only Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells were nominated.
So its a joke really, and every year award shows, as mentioned previously, pick and choose what they want based on what will get the most publicity, please the most people or get the most people interested or involved in the award show.

Well thats an odd bag. Also annoyed about half a sixpence not getting more nominations. Really pleased for Our Ladies but best comedy seems an odd category for it to be in. Ink is barely dry on The Girls programmes and they have been nominated. It's only been running about 3 days hasn't it? Fingers crossed for Sheridan and her ever increasing collection of doggies.

Well I suppose it's like the Oscars too which as we all know do not go to the best of anything from the previous year but rather it's a popularity contest - Viola Davis campaigned as a supporting actress for Fences because she wanted an Oscar. If she didn't want one, she would've gone Lead because she still would've been nominated. And if they wanted to give an award for the best actress, it would've been Isabelle Hupert, not Emma Stone who gave a perfectly fine performance in La La Land but was given the Oscar because they like to anoint the young hot new 'thing' on the block (Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson, etc.). But the Oliviers do not matter in any way in the grand scheme of things (not like the Tonys in New York), and so all the more reason why they should just nominate the worthy people and get over themselves.

Brie Larson was genuinely brilliant in Room. The Oscars do occasionally get it right! (But like I say, more by happy accident than anything else...)

David Baddiel nominated for best entertainment and family! You wouldn't want to take the family to that. It should have an 18 certificate for language.

My Family: Not the Sitcom and The Red Shoes are Entertainment.
Peter Pan is Family.
Cinderella is Entertainment & Family.
(in my opinion)
The award is for Best Entertainment and Family
NOT Best Family Entertainment

Screaming with those nominations for Harry Potter!
WTF with the conjoined noms for both musical categories? It's ridiculous!
''Aladdin'' and ''Lazarus'' basically shut-out, gosh!
Also, The Glass Menagerie really rocked those noms, glad for them!
I believe Riley and Jackson will get the awards for Actress, who's the favorite for the male counterparts?

Peter Pan was certainly NOT entertaining. It was a family play, not an entertainment.

One quick doubt: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was shut-out or not eligible?

One quick doubt: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was shut-out or not eligible? It hasn't opened yet! It will be eligible next year, providing that it runs for at least thirty performances.

Charlie should and likely will win Best Actor in a Musical. But I could also see it going to Andy Karl. But Tyrone is apparently a lot of peoples favourite but it is really a supporting role so he shouldn't really be in that catagory. I want Charlie to win though, as he truly deserves it for that performance and if Tyrone does win, though deserved, it would be annoying as he doesn't belong in that category and it would take it away from Andy or Charlie based on category placement.
Sidenote: I'm just gonna highlight the bit I am referring too and someone can edit it if they feel I am bringing down governments, but I hate that the whole quote keeps disappearing and I'm not gonna bother doing it again and again.

Glenda for Best Actress surely. Ian for Best Actor I hope.
Glenn v Amber v Sheridan three way fight for best musical actress.
Good nod for Rafe Spall as supporting actor.
Musical supporting actress. I want it to be Rebecca but pleased Haydn got a nomination.
