There is no mystery event at the Savoy tomorrow. They’re selling the cast recordings from the merch stands for an hour. That’s it. And Bonnie Langford will be doing the splits ! As she should.

God why does it have to be the Jamie Lloyd version... It was awful, no? But ALW wants to keep riding this “newly relevant” vibe Lloyd has given him with that SB. And also £££ of course. But cripes.

I didn’t see it, so could someone explain what was so bad about the Regents Park Evita that Jamie Lloyd did? Was it just that his modern take with no set and everyone in black was less ‘known’ then so jarred more?
I’ve only seen his take on Sunset (and loved that) and the Evita score is one of my favourites, so I’m really keen to see this next summer.
I guess in the days of big sets and productions being unaffordable in the main for limited runs, then it’s a way of embracing doing things differently and getting to hear ALW’s iconic scores live. Hopefully they’ll hire Alan Williams as MD again.

I'm slightly torn on this one as I really struggled with his RPOAT 'Evita' but I thought his 'Sunset' was one of the most exciting, imaginative things I've seen in years. I wish it well - but I think for anyone (like me) fortunate enough to have seen the Hal Prince original there is nothing (so far) that's ever come anywhere close.
I see the Palladium is currently dark over next 'summer' so do we assume it's definitely going in there? If so, this is going to need a name. They could, of course, star cast 'Che' and find a young, unknown to sing the s*** out of the role of Eva.

As it’s reportedly the same production I’ve merged with the original OAT thread.

The WOS article states its unconfirmed if its the exact same production. So it's possible Jamie will revisit it and make changes.

If his production is focused on the power of the image to seduce others and delude yourself (via the frame of stars/influencers today) Lloyd has just done that with 'Sunset Boulevard'. I hope this is a new (or substantially new) production, otherwise it could just make the scope of the writing smaller and narrower.
I hope the production has some political bite, because soon after the inauguration of the new US president it'll either resonate as Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. I can see the Brat Summer / Swifties thing working, if you're a Harris detractor (reducing her to just those 'pop' elements). If it's Trump then it could feel like wittering on about irrelevant and samey things - though Trump's mate Musk is certainly manipulating the media and making a dollar millionaire a day to encourage Republican voter registration.
Perhaps if it's Trump they should cast a male Evita. After all the original production was admired by Trump and Thatcher.
Thaxton for Eva.
I'm serious. It would certainly work if the Army sang 'Lil Bitch, dangerous jade'. Seems more like an Edinburgh Fringe thing you'd never get permission to do.

I’ve heard that it’s going to be loosely based on OAT but with a lot of new elements. Not set obviously. Just the usual video and JL tricks.

I think JL needs to told not every show needs video, the OAT production didn't have it for obvious reasons and would end up like R&J where it wasn't necessary to the production.

I would say I don't mind a lot of JL's gimmicks, they worked really well with Sunset Boulevard and The Effect but R&J felt like the greatest hits of his tricks. It's ironic he talks of stripping things back but has gimmicks like cameras, videos and microphones!

I hated the OAT production. It may even have been the worst thing I've ever seen - even worse than The Sound of Music snore fest with Connie Fisher!!! I can't understand why it is so difficult to get a decent production of Evita. I have preferred the film version to any production of this I have seen which is never true for any other musical for me.

I think partly because it fleshes out the story more.

Where they had falling chandeliers and helicopters, he has star power, cameras and makes cool use of the whole theatre.

Personally I am among the ones who really enjoyed the OAT version of Evita in the last pre-pandemic summer of 2019... I remember how divisive it was, and of course certain preferences understandably would come down to personal taste and/or to an attachment to earlier productions. However, I felt that in that case the Lloydification had been a bit less radical than, say, with Cyrano or The Seagull, and it had depth, not just gimmicks.
In fact, he had made some bold choices (and gone for a not so obvious take) highlighting certain similarities between Eva's social-climbing and going from rags to riches, as it were, and the journey of an influencer / Kardashian kind of character. Of course, how that was expressed (through visuals, costumes, choreography, etc.) on stage might have been to one's taste or not, but there was undeniably a value in trying to tell Eva's story through a contemporary lens rather than by way of a historically accurate depiction.
I think it'll be curious to see how much of that will be preserved and whether he will add to it following on from Sunset's success...

Please forgive me if I seem naive... but PLEASE some more rock-ish orchestration if they decide to change this even a little. If they can add a few flourishes to the Sunset orchestration they can add the electric guitars back to Evita. Please, thank you.

For what it's worth, I also thought the OAT production was superb. Visceral, unique, and also nothing like Lloyds's Sunset Boulevard.
