Admittedly the producers are not doing "premium" pricing for this - hurrah, but the price hike to £69.50 will not have helped from preview prices especially mid-week. Not even being offered on TKTS (online) even at full price. I would have thought this would give them another ticket outlet as the Phoenix Theatre is not exactly in a prime location.

Went by TKTS booth this morning- no deal. At 6.30 pm, however, there are dress circle seats at 28% off at £49.50.

On TKTS again for tonight (at 6.00pm) Circle £49.50 from £69.50 and Grand Circle £19.50 from £29.50
LOTS of availability according to the ATG website. It looks half full/empty.

No, indeed. The night I saw the show it seemed full and got a great reaction from the mainly female audience. I thought it had found a target market and although the show didn't especially appeal to me, I could not deny the positive reaction the show got and the complete standing ovation it got at the end.

Oh dear. I actually think this works better without the songs, which are like a poor attempt to mimic Victoria Wood but fail miserably. Terrific cast who all give lovely performances but deserve far better than the material they're given. Michele Dotrice has turned herself into THE go-to comedy scene-stealer in London's glitzy West End though and Sophie-Louise Dann has got a figure that could (and probably has) stop traffic!
The place was empty last night though, don't know whether that's an exception or the rule but if it's not a one-off I can't see this lasting long. There were moments I could have sworn I saw some tumbleweed rolling by.

Yes, all three levels. To be honest I'm surprised they didn't move everyone forward. There were even loads of empty seats in the rows towards the front of the stalls. The Grand Circle probably had about 40-50 people in it.

Only Equates to
Between 15-25 full shows
Obviously depending on the prices people paid
It's hardly that significant
Given many shows gross a million a week ongoing in the WE and musicals on Broadway take up 2 million dollars a week regularly
It looks good
But if that rush was all the people who were going to book following the reviews it's not that amazing

That doesn't suggest that £1,000,000 worth of tickets were used in one week, but were sold. Those tickets could well be for shows spread out across the booking period.

£1m seems like a lot but keep in mind a flop like Viva Forever had a huge advance but burnt through it pretty quickly.

£1 million across the run is poor, although the figure is manipulated to give the impression of a big hit! Full page ad in the London Evening Standard tonight.
I am surprised the show is not doing better at the box office after the positive reviews and audience reaction when I saw the show. Perhaps word of mouth may build the audience?
Another random thought I had re (apparent) lack of bums on seats may be that the show is considered, sad and about bereavement. Perhaps folk just want a laugh on a night out in these times. I notice Russell Howard has sold out the Albert Hall for about half of his 10 nights there!!! Tickets too at around £35 - half the price of The Girls. There is only so much cash to go round......

I must admit, even though I didn't want to know about the shows plot, once I found out certain parts of the show involved bereavement and illness, I have been since tempted to not go to the show for a little while. But that is just because I have recently lost someone to similar circumstances and I k ow that, right now, I don't know if I could enjoy a show surrounding similar circumstances.

Remember like the critics, Baz is just part of the marketing team, hoping people will be overwhelmed by £1m tickets sold and go out and buy their tickets. Over half a year, that could equate to £40k a week, which wouldn't compute to 1 performance being completely sold out. So Bax has completely reported meaninless tosh and really treading water as he is short on other stories.

Yes the critics seem to be all part of the marketing team of these shows. The prices too have gone up quite a bit. I do think it appeals to their target market though and that will ensure a decent run. I definitely agree with the above, you get honey from where the bees are and that is what the press do, over the years I have seen them over praise pedestrian productions and kick excellent small fringe productions in the teeth. The critics are meaningless today and the public are wishing up and getting their opinions from elsewhere.

Glancing through the tweets on Baz's timeline something stood out. In an exchange about Finding Neverland he was saying how these shows cost millions to put on. Reading that makes his tweet about this selling a million pounds worth of tickets sound less impressive.

But here's the maths...
£1M divided by £65 (top ticket) = 15.5K Phoenix seats just over 1K 8 shows pw Just under 2 weeks sold out
They need to keep this up or they won't survive past their July booking period. And remember there is a box office bounce after great reviews but that only lasts until the reviews become fish and chip paper

My view is that to be a success in London a musical needs - stars, popular songs or has already been a hit. As to be a success its got to appeal to the people who once or twice a year, tourists, family's and the coach groups, having critical success means little to most people.
In regard to the Girls the ticket prices feel too high and appears to be aimed at a certain audience, the producers are trying not to discount tickets, but with tickets still being unsold, I wonder how long they can continue to do this for? As for me, I am waiting for offers before I go as I'd like to see it, but its not high on my list of shows I'm prepared to spend lots of money to see.
