That is quite a run. A 20% West End transfer rate. Yeah, its fair to say that his run there has been a success overall that transfer rate will increase with Cat on a hot tin roof i assume |

He's been the best AD working in London for many years so it is a good move for the OV - I wonder what attracted him to the job ? Very tough to replace him at the Almeida - they should sound out Robert Icke.

I wonder if his RSC Hamlet will transfer to OV. OV say "Director Matthew Warchus will programme his final season up to the end of 2026" so unless he brings it in himself, could be quite a wait. |

Just as the Daldry Inspector Calls should be retired, there has to come a time when this Carol is retired. Or at least rested.

For sure. But id probably say its a few years time away at the least. Risks are good, but if the Xmas sell out funds the development of other shows across the year, its a good trade off |

I think A Christmas Carol will be kept but perhaps be every other year. It's like the equivalent of a panto for the Old Vic in that it brings in the money for the following year.
In terms of replacement at the Almeida, Robert Icke is the only one I can think of since Frecknall is joining Goold at the Old Vic.

I doubt Goold would have taken the job if there was a condition he’d never be able to stage a Xmas show. They could surely move it to a West End venue where they could run it for longer. |

There is a possibility that Frecknall doesn't want to be an AD just yet. Running a theatre is a demanding job even small ones like the Almeida

They seem to have an arrangement at the Almeida where both can go off and transfer/do work elsewhere (NT, West End, Broadway etc.), while having a steady pair of hands on the theatre. I'm really, really excited to see what they both produce at the OV - especially since Frecknall has never actually directed there. I imagine it'll be the same recipe that has boosted the Almeida to international success: starry revivals of classics with a modern spin, some good new writing from abroad, and the occasional musical that transfers unsuccessfully to Broadway (Goold and Warchus have that much in common!) |
