I won't lie, I didn't know the Rose Theatre, Kingston, was looking for a new AD, but Christopher Haydon has been appointed.

Madani Younis appointed chief executive producer at the ShedPresumably this is the reason for his swift departure from the Southbank Centre given the timings - this must have already been on the cards in October. Wonder why this wasn't announced at the same time - left space for people to read all sorts of things into his sudden exit.

After eight years, Robert Hastie has announced the 24/25 season will be his last as Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres.
I'm going to miss seeing him in the home baking aisle of Marks & Spencer.
Recruitment for one of the most coveted roles in theatre will begin later this month.

The branch closest to the world-famous Crucible Theatre, obvs. 🙂

Could Hastie be headed to the Young Vic? Does he suit the venue?

Could Hastie be headed to the Young Vic? Does he suit the venue? Hard to imagine anyone less suitable than him for the Young Vic I’d say, not at all the profile of the AD they’ll be wanting. Donmar maybe ? In Grandage’s footsteps.

With the timing of this (sad) news it feels pretty clear that all roads seem to be pointing towards Hastie becoming the Deputy Artistic Director of the NT?

Stella Powell-Jones seems to be doing well at Jermyn Street (despite, or because of, not programming anything of interest to me). Farm Hall is the first West End transfer they've had for ages. I expect she'll move on to a bigger theatre in the medium term.

8 months means the board must have really not liked her plans.

Wouldn’t they have discussed her vision and plans before appointing her? Fishy!

It seems to me that, perhaps due to the massive success NDT has experienced in recent years, the Board now wants to move towards more commercially mainstream programming. This shift wasn’t apparent in Martin’s first season, which felt more in line with the Vault Festival model of delivering work.

Lear deBessonet and Bartlett Sher are appointed Artistic Director and Executive Producer of Lincoln Center Theater: deadline.com/2024/09/lincoln-center-theater-lear-debessonet-bartlett-sher-1236083522/Given Bart Sher's long association with LCT, I was kind of surprised he didn't get the AD job but I wonder if he wasn't able to full commit to the role full time, the new role means he can still be associated with Lincoln Center but free to do other projects.

I imagine he's been hired for his address book and artistic vision. The main PFT programme is usually 4-5 shows programmed in rep over 5 months in summer so maybe he'll do one of those a year and call on his showbiz friends to do the other shows. There will be space to do more experimental stuff in the Studio, but in recent years the main PFT programme has been pretty safe - for example, in 2025 the main auditorium productions will be Grease, The Great Gatsby, The 39 Steps and Sunshine on Leith. Not a lot to scare the coach parties there...

I love Pitlochry and I'm generally a fan of Alan Cumming, but I wouldn't naturally have put them together... That was my first reaction, but on reflection his own theatre credits have been overwhelmingly mainstream and almost all would have fitted Pitlochry (must be 50 years since I was there ).

Some of the most significant things I remember him doing was a dance performance inspired by Burns, a one-person Macbeth and The Bacchae. And wasn't he one of the producers for the UK production of 'A Strange Loop'? Not sure I can see any of those running for a month in Perthshire... Word is though that he applied for the position when it was advertised and went through the same selection process as anyone else, so it doesn't seem like a vanity hire. Forbes Masson must be clearing his diary for 2026 though...
