I'd bet anything that they can't outright say that her homophobic views are the reason she's gone. That's why the statement is so fluffly. I'd guess that part of the deal which got rid of her says something about them not being allowed to outright impact her reputation or they'll be sued to mars and back. They won't say anything more on the issue regarding this, because they legally can't.
I'm hoping they'll continue to show their allyship in the ways they can, i.e. supporting the lgbtq+ community.

Wow I have only just read her previous tweets and am truly appalled. Let this be a lesson for future casting directors.. the power of social media.
How she can work in this industry and have such offensive views towards a large portion of it is beyond me. Not that she will ever work now.
And she clearly didn’t read the script..

I never want to hear from her father on any subject.
We do have to work to get his honour removed - no-one who supports the causes he does should be honoured by the Queen for anything.

i honestly don’t see how she’s ever going to work in mainstream theatre again after this. I’m sure there are some niche areas where she might find work but wow, what a terrible waste of her talent.

There are lots of competing issues at play here; I’m not surprised it took this long and no doubt lawyers were involved. With respect, it’s a little naive to think what was essentially an employment law dispute could have been solved overnight.
I also think the statement goes as far as it can go.
There was a case in Ireland a few years ago where a prominent Drag performer/activist called some very traditional/ conservative commentators in Irish media homophobic (their views certainly could have been construed as such) during a TV interview.
The commentators threatened legal proceedings against the broadcaster for defamation (for showing the interview) and got a huge pay out. Labeling someone as a homophobe is potentially defamatory (at least in Ireland), even though the truth is supposed to be a defence! Frustrating but true.

Realistically, aside from her unquestionable talent, she must have a fairly decent agent to have gone from Hope Mill to National Theatre in less than a year. They will be able to redirect her and give her purpose, I'd guess recording. Religious events and Religious music are/is a huge business so maybe she'd take that route.

At least we can settle down to watch Pose on BBC2 tonight - that is a great piece of representation that we can all celebrate
(plus it is great TV)

Well i hope we can all now get behind the production. These are two great theatres, a great show, which now is probably going to struggle a little bit just from the whole bad feeling of it all. I hope that the production can be as successful as possible.

I wasn’t going to go because Leicester is a bit tricky from Manc but I might look into it now. Show support etc 🙂

I too hope everyone gets behind this production, and hope even more that the actress who now plays Celie makes it big time....

The right decision for her to leave, but also not too impressed with the statement.
I wonder what the outcome would have been had she been a Muslim? Maybe different? Maybe not.... It’s an interesting debate with Christianity when it comes to faith, double standards, acceptance, the bible, diversity, free speech and 2019! They have that issue with LGBT education in some Birmingham Schools at the moment.
Live and let love, have a cocktail, be happy and move on!

Very happy with this outcome from the theatres’ side - from her, the silence says everything. I doubt she’ll ever budge. Just shows that homophobia still permeates everywhere in society, even in the one profession you’d expect to be the most welcoming. Anyway, I can now return to being excited about this production AND we can do what we do best on the board and speculate to our hearts’ content who her replacement might be...

Can I start some dream-casting off and throw some votes in for Joanna Francis and Danielle Steers. Thanks. Also Marisha Wallace would obviously be fab but I can't see her sticking around after Dreamgirls closes. I’m shipping Marisha for the role of Becky in Waitress when it happens here. I’d love for us to keep her here. Edit: Urban dictionary has informed me that my use of the verb “shipping” is wrong here. Millennial fail. In actual fact I wrote my dissertation on the subject of teaching primary school pupils about LGBTQ+ families. There’s an awful lot of walls to dismantle there, and I think real change begins at Government level. The barriers to inclusion are predominantly from parents unfortunately.

I know it is going back 40 years, but I remember my parents having to give consent for the sex education that my primary school was offering. I also remember the black and white film about pregnant elephants. So there is a long-standing tradition of asking parents for consent about these matters. There will be those who wish to withdraw their children from those classes.
In terms of general relationship education, I don't think consent should be extended to give parents a veto over that.
The situation in Birmingham is appalling and the school/council need to stand up to the parents and tell them that they have no right to interfere with the curriculum on this subject. And if they are unhappy, tough luck.

That’s a different thread. Feel free to start one but after all of this let’s give the Curve the benefit of getting THIS thread back onto their production.
