So Alexandra Burke is doing strictly come dancing. I guess this is not going into the west end.

That'll teach me only to read the last page of a thread. Thought one of the Goss boys had signed up for Sister Act! Not sure which one would have made the best Deloris.

Saw this tonight in Manchester...it's just a whole load of meh isn't it. Alexandra Burke can sing, but the score isn't suited to her voice. She can't act, and tries to compensate for it by over-doing the whole sassy thing. Started to grate after about five minutes.
Music was way underpowered. I think a combination of not enough musicians and not enough volume. Needs a full pit band really.
Rest of the cast fine, some good, some bad. Bloke playing Curtis really not good.
Similar feedback to what I remember giving after seeing the show in Wimbledon. Ms Burke has probably improved but the show itself hasn't. Rumours of a potential West End run worry me...with casting like Alexandra it would certainly sell well, but it's by no means a West End-quality production.
Three stars at a push.

When will they release the west end run. Only about four weeks to go of the tour. Do we know who's doing Dublin yet?

Aww, i liked it. Though i did see it when it first started so probably it's declined in quality.

Alexandra Burke did the original Dublin run but for the second visit the role will be performed by Joanna Francis ...... Thats according to the Bord Gais Theatre social media so I hope that has sorted that for you.

Hi Went to see this for the second time in Bristol, its got worse. Theatre very empty. Something is missing, I cant get my head around it. Can Alexandra Burke Act? Not sure to be honest. To me she is like that in real life. Not sure if this cast is good enough for the west end.

She thought something was missing, couldn't work it out either and thought the theatre was almost empty. Edit: Even weirder, Laura W just deleted her original post!

Well im guessing if the theatre was fairly empty the first thing missing would be an atmosphere. Just that simple chatter and hubbub before a show creates an atmosphere that intensifies when the house lights go down. Without that the atmosphere is bound to be a little awkward and a lot harder for the cast to get a response from.

^No doubt that the atmosphere suffers but that post from 'Laura' related to a performance in Oxford. A poster who was also in attendance on the same night said that the theatre had been far busier than for some other shows, though it had been described as 'empty'.
My suggestion is that it's the same poster on multiple accounts, who appears to have an axe to grind. Either that or two perfect strangers use identical phrases. Not the first time there's been such carry on in this thread.

I caught this again in Belfast at the weekend having seen it in Dublin previously. It was sold out crowd again that night, on its second run in the city.
It's definitely an enjoyable evening, if imperfect. The first half drags a little, and this is partly down to the static staging. I found 'When I find my Baby' and 'I Could Be That Guy' to be a little dull, and I was really looking forward to the pace picking up for 'Raise Your Voice' etc. The second act is much, much better. If it does transfer to the West End next year, they should really do something else with the staging for those two songs, at least. The scene with the bar falls quite flat, aside from Sr Mary Patrick's jokes about angels etc. I missed 'Do the Sacred Mass' from the London production- the bar scene just feels a bit pointless and unnecessary without the accompanying song.
Alexandra is a compelling leading lady, though I did find the over exaggerated mannerisms verged on wearing at times. She has a natural stage presence though, and she carried off the humour, drama the softer moments well too. 'Bless Our Show' and 'Sister Act' were really nicely done and charming. Her vocals are excellent and she has a lovely, rich quality to her voice. I would like to see her doing something which isn't a 'diva' role in the future, as I think with the right direction, she would pull it off well. As it turned out,the friend who accompanied me had no idea that it was Alexandra performing until I told him at the interval. Clearly he didn't do any advance research but he was happily convinced by her performance!
The supporting cast is really likable. Sarah Goggin was really wonderful as Sr Mary Robert, as was Susannah Van Den Berg as Sr Mary Patrick. Enjoyed Liz Kitchen as Mary Laz too- I hadn't seen her before. Sandy Grigelis is great as TJ, as is Karen Mann as Mother Superior. Karen's 'Haven't Got a Prayer' was really strong. Joe Vetch is the new 'Sweaty Eddie'- he was perfectly fine and likable but I preferred Jon Robyns in the role- I think he had a bigger presence and charisma onstage.
I quite liked the actor musician element, though I can't help but feel that a full orchestra would have a more impactful sound.
All in all, it's worth seeing, though I would like to see them pump a bit more cash into the staging- I would probably give it 3.75 stars! I am tempted to catch it with Joanna Francis when it finishes the run in Dublin- just out of curiosity.
