That trailer has made me really excited for the show! It does look really good and Alexandra really fits the part!

Just watched the trailer, and I can't help but feel ever so slightly underwhelmed. Alexandra looks and sounds great, and I loved her in The Bodyguard so no issue there. But it does all look slightly tacky and cheap. Where is all the glamour of the Original Production? I thought the whole point was to have Deloris' life be super glam and over the top so that when she goes to the Church you really see the difference but it all looks along the same vein in this.

But maybe it'll work. The original production was huge! Maybe in a smaller production the story will remain the heart of it more. I have confidence in Craig Revel Horwood and he wouldn't put on a bad show.

The glamour isn't there for a reason, it was CRH choice to strip it back a bit. It's a small production and not the west end version. Not only that but you see her glam life for about 5 mins in the show so it makes sense for a touring set to be based around the location you see for 90% of the rest of the show. The create the club/glam sections with the use of light boxes, glitter balls, lighting and costumes. It's kinda hard to go on full on glam in a church set.

I completely understand the whole reasoning for it, but to sell the show, if I hadn't wanted to see it before, this trailer, for me, wouldn't sell it I don't think. I think it looks a bit underwhelming and tacky, but that may just be me, but it hasn't made me any more excited than before to see the show. Maybe I am also being slightly influenced by not the best of reviews that I have read or heard but it doesn't look that great based on this sneak peak.

I thought it had received very positive reviews? I thought it was great personally anyway, mind you, I've not seen the original. As i haven't seen the original other than photos and small clips so i don't know the real differences other than the on stage musicians element. My thought, and i might be wrong, is they go to town far more on the 80's vibe in this, which in part, is why it probably looks to you a bit tacky, The 80's was tacky. The use of lighting is a very 80's palette. The costumes, very 80's. I think it probably is and looks tacky in some places, but i tend to think it's on purpose. You might have been meant to take the west end version somewhat seriously (?) and i'm not sure that's the case with this, other than the few obviously serious moments. All that being said, the trailer isn't actually very good and doesn't represent the production very well in my opinion.

Overall, the critical reaction has been largely positive.
Pretty much all of the critics reviews I've read have been four star- Telegraph, Express, Mail on Sunday, Whats On Stage, Broadway World, Reviews Hub. As well as a load of smaller theatre bloggers etc.
Five stars from the Stage.
Alex Belfield slated it in his video review, aside from AB and gave it two stars, though I think he is deliberately provocative in his language.
The reactions of posters here of course has been more mixed, for sure.
in relation to it looking tacky, isn't that the whole point of the show? The silver full length habits used in previous productions are glamorous but also incredibly tacky and deliberately so. Deloris'dress sense is tacky... all the low rent glamour. It's the 60s/70s and that's the whole appeal, no?
I think the trailer looks very good- not amazing, but good. They're obviously pushing it as a vehicle for Alexandra. It's sold very well already, with an extra week already added in Manchester and Belfast, so I don't think the producers are too worried.
Hopefully the longer EPK will show us some of the nuns singing!

I don't agree at all. It's not meant to be that glamorous at the beginning at all. It's meant to be quite tacky. She gets given Curtis's wife's blue fur for goodness sake - not exactly classy. She's not even a performer in a club as Curtis won't let her. She wants the glamorous lifestyle with all the Donna Sunmer talk but she certainly doesn't have it. It's the same in the film (although she does perform to an audience of about three). (In the Original London Palladium version she was a performer, but still only in a seedy club owned by a crook.) The costumes look better in this video than the still photos we had the other day. There's something about Alexandra's performance as Deloris that seems a bit too arrogant for my liking from what I can see in 30 seconds, but it may just be because she's got a camera in her face. I will withhold judgment of her whole performance until I see it.

I loved the West End production and the last UK tour even more which starred the incredible Cynthia Eviro. I'm not sure about this one as I'm not convinced about the actors playing their own instruments during the musical numbers. I have seen excellent reviews but I'm obviously going to compare it with what went before. With such like for like productions touring at present (Billy and Poppins) where money has been spent on them and it really is like you're watching the West End productions, I can't help but feel this has been done on a much smaller budget. Will reserved my judgement until I see this in Liverpool, (travelling up from Plymouth) and let you know then. It's still a good show with great music so fingers crossed!

How much are they paying you @bop ? LOADS. Just trying to keep the thread alive... I appreciate that my posts are effusive but I do love the show and AB... happy to give it a rest if my input is unwelcome.

No one can love the show more than me, believe me. However, threads can and will be kept alive naturally as the show goes around the country (and beyond (Morocco)).
Anyway, I won't say any more, as it's probably against the rules.

Well I, for one, don't find your input unwelcome, @bop. Not sure why we must so fervently stamp out any spark of enthusiasm for a show!

Oh James your cynicism saddens me! Just because someone shows a large interest in a production, the only reason must be because they are financially involved? Why does that have to be the first and only reasoning behind it? I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, retract these remarks and deliver your good self an apology, but on this occasion I'll go with innocent until proven guilty! And I think I prescribe a gentle dose of lightening up! #Enthusiasm
