I’m extremely lucky to have a very good friend who is now a BFI Patron. Going to be his plus one at the launch preview on 30th August.

Full programme now online. I don't live in London but there's some tempting stuff. Peterloo is getting its premiere in Manchester (quite right too) so I'll try to get to that.

I'm going to the festival launch tonight at the BFI - I had a quick browse at the programme earlier and theres not too much that has got me excited (yet) but I'll need to have a proper look through the brochure before I decide if I'll go and see anything (will probably give the galas a miss, I'm finding it hard to justify paying the best part of £50 to see a film on the offchance a celeb will also be there)

Widows, The Front Runner, The Favourite and Can You Ever Forgive Me are the ones I want to see, I'm surprised Bohemian Rhapsody isn't screening at all unless it's the Surprise film.

Bailed from the launch after an hour tonight, a distinctly uninspiring line up (and God only knows how they decided what clips and trailers they would show) - as it stands, only Stan & Ollie and Can You Forgive Me? are catching the eye.

The only other film I’m thinking could be the surprise film is Halloween.

I wanted to cut down what I saw this year after 21 films last year, and my quick glance through the programme suggests that should be quite easy.

Is it not on general release at the time the Festival is on? Or is it due out later in October? Just realised Widows is a members-only ballot, so that rules me out. From a quick glance there isn't much that would interest me on the nights I'm available - possibly The Favourite, A Private War and Outlaw King but not many more.

I'm finding this a pretty uninspiring year for film in general but I do think they've assembled a good lineup once again, taking pretty much everything major from the other festivals except perhaps First Man, Boy Erased and A Star is Born (which I am seeing tomorrow night in Italy anyway).
Mostly thrilled that If Beale Street Could Talk will be there, but also very excited to see The Favourite and Roma after the raves coming from Venice today.

I can't make the Friday screening of Widows unfortunately, I won't be in London.

excited to see The Favourite Rave reviews for it, though in a way that also points up the dearth of interesting film-makers at the moment.

Very uninspired this year. I’ll be interested to see what talks get added though.

I was also at the launch and pretty meh about all of it. The fact that the opening and Closing galas has a them and us industry premiere at Cineworld and then a showing for members at the far more inferior Embankment Gardens shows what they think of members. The key galas are very mainstream films that you will be able to see in the A/W.
So many will be on Netflix/Prime and general release in the next 6 months that it no longer feels special to attend (plus the pricing *gasp*). It is clear LFF is now the lesser film festivals in a world that features Toronto and Venice.

This year I'm picking out smaller films which may not get a wide UK release and avoiding the galas altogether.

Double agree. I've seen two galas at Embankment Gardens and neither were pleasurable. Won't do it again!
Last year, I enjoyed an intense documentary by Barbet Schroeder (and he gave a spectacular short talk) and Good Time with a good selection of the creatives speaking afterwards. Also liked Downsizing, but no one spoke at that so it felt like I could have just waited to see it.

Yes, most of what I saw last year I could have seen in a normal cinema during awards season - the ones I really would have missed because of limited releases that I’m glad I saw were a strange Chinese animated film that I’ve forgotten the title of, Bad Lucky Goat, and Journey’s End.
So I’m also going to try and do the strange/quirky films this year instead of the obvious awards contenders.

They really are talking up the Embakment Garden Cinema this year with the loss of the Odeon (which had the most uncomfortable seating, so that’s one plus).
I went to the launch thing at the Mayfair hotel, and apart from being showered with wine and snacks, it seemed more of an opportunity for the programmers to sit and tell everyone about how many films they’ve seen at other festivals. It wasn’t all that necessary an event.
My patron friend wants to go to lots of the Gala screenings. I’m only interested in a couple of them, but I’d rather see them for cheaper the next day, however because he’s a workaholic and refuses to take any time off, he needs to do the overpriced evening red carpet affairs... I don’t own enough nice dresses to do six in a row!

Only looking to get tickets to the WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old so far this year. 3D and colouring for archive film makes me a little nervous, but IWM plus Peter Jackson makes me feel optimistic. Can't wait.

I do think it's slightly less interesting as well this year - I tend to have 6 to 8 films picked out but only four this year and two of those are maybes. So many things get released in London, even the super long NY public library documentary I saw at the film festival had a cinema release.
I'm leaning towards international films - Soni, Styx and The Breaker Upperers. Been so long as a maybe. For Widows and The Favourite I might as well wait for the regular release...

Excited for Colette and The Favourite, but they will release in cinemas so...
I remember them having an event with Cate Blanchett, but cant see it anywhere on the website

Suspiria is a masterpiece btw, but not for the faint hearted.
