Just caught up. Really liked that, going to watch again before the next episode. Haven't read the book so no prior knowledge of the story. Really like half a dozen or so of the actors. Thought Lyra was really good. Really looking forward to the next episode

Film was solid until they got up North. Thought this week was much better, lots of re-aligning details from the book to make it work for TV. The Magisterium characters are a bit panto baddie but Boreal and Coulter are a good combo

I though the pace was off until the last few minutes - the Gyptians' raid and search didn't feel very dynamic, nor did the Magisterium's, and the stolen children didn't come across as particularly distressed (are they meant to be doped?). People slag off the film, but it did feel more like an adventure: this, in its peculiar 8pm timeslot, seems to be going at 'Downton/Call the Midwife' speed when maybe it would be better shown an hour earlier and with the directing/editing pace of Doctor Who or Harry Potter.

I’m not a fan of Ruth Wilson so it’s never going to be perfect for me but I really enjoyed tonight’s episode.

I've not read the books or seem the film either and I've absolutely loved both episodes so far. Will definitely be wanting to read them after the first series! Or should I wait until it's all over and done with?

I’m not a fan of Ruth Wilson I think she's great here, really playing it with relish. On the other hand, the presence of Jeremy Irons (foxhunting git and always wooden with it) has put me off Watchmen.

I am another who hasn’t read the books or seen the film so thought I would give it a try. Having seen the first two episodes I was pleasantly surprised. Ruth Wilson is very menacing and Dafne Keen as Lyra is very good. Ideal series for a Sunday evening.

Patrick Freyne's review in the Irish Times is rather fun.

Fortunately kept to my 2 episode rule and have grown into this.
Not enamoured with the first episode most probably because I have not read the books or knew much about the plot which I now see as an advantage.

Still lots to like but thought the latest episode really highlighted how they're underestimating the importance of daemons and are missing a lot of nuance and storytelling detail. There were almost no daemons on screen until they find the 'ghost', they should have been in every shot until the reveal (which should have included the fish). The timing of introducing Will was really unhelpful too, that could have been done a week earlier. Really undercuts the horror of Bolvangar. Also, why are the Tartar's wolves on leads? They should be daemons too.
Still like it but it's just good Sunday evening telly rather than the classic it deserves to be.

I keep getting feels every time I remember something that’s going to happen or just generally how glorious the books are. The last Harry Potter did the same to me yesterday too.

What do people think of this so far? I have to say it's not really working for me. I wasn't that keen on the books, other than the first, and by switching to and from from books 1 and 2 it has lost what I liked about Northern Lights. The unfairly criticised film managed to retain the first book's dynamism which has been lost here. I wonder what the demographics of the viewers are - can it hang on to those who don't already know and like the books?

I’ve really liked it so far, although it must be 10+ years since I last read the books. Young is an avid watcher though- I think not knowing the books at all has been a bonus for them. Has anyone seen the viewing figures? Did they already film the next season?

Has anyone seen the viewing figures? Did they already film the next season? Filming is already underway for the next series, I think - with child actors growing I suppose they can't hang around - and mid-series UK ratings seem to have settled between 6 and 7 million including catch-up. In the USA it began with 700,000 viewers, according to Deadline, which is considered good for the HBO Monday slot, though Wikipedia gives it less.

Yes they have introduced Will Parry early, because i think he will meet Lyra at the end of this season, instead of them meeting in Cittegaze (scuse spelling) as they do in the book. The film version really missed out so much of the book that its moreof an adventure story than anything else.

The X Men film Logan is on again tonight on Freeview Ch4 7 - Dafne Keen's debut, I think.

I’m finding the whole thing really exhilarating and gorgeous and think the early introduction of Will quite a clever way of moving stuff along quickrr.

I really want to like this, but I don't much. It looks great, mostly. The casting is really good, mostly. There's nothing much wrong with it. It's just... not all there. I loved the books though. I know several people who don't know the books but who love the tv series. I think it's just all a bit dull and ponderous. There aren't enough daemons, and the real close link of the daemon/human hasn't been obvious, so I didn't find the cutting nearly traumatic enough. And they haven't made much at all about Lyra's tall tales and lying - when she talked to Iofur that was the first time I think, and didn't show her in her element of tale telling. I'm really disappointed overall. I'll keep watching, but it's lacking for me.

My mistake. its my favourite book of the series too!

They seem to have a big budget but its not that evident. Miranda and McAvoy are wasted in small roles. Brave of them to go ahead with the second season already.

Much prefer this to both the film and the stage version. The latter was just plot, plot, plot with barely time to stop and think and the former was softened too much as well.
As such, the slower pace of this gives more time to reflect on the world(s) it creates. Looking forward to the pay off as it moves through books two and three.

Is that the official Magisterium view, Cardinal? Still enjoying it, feels an hour too late and a little too creepy for kids but I'm not sure how talking polar bears cross over to an adult market.. We know the books fairly well so no surprises at all and we're always judging rather than just enjoying it. Love the pace of the Boreal stuff, wish it could all slow down a little and just make some time for the characters.

God no, please don't slow it down! It would be glacial, imo. I'll watch the end, and I'll watch the 2nd series to see if Will and Andrew Scott can perk it up, but I'm finding it dull and worthy.

Armoured. Bears. Fighting! Cutting kids souls out to force them into adulthood quicker. Ruth Wilson masticating every last mouthful of scenery. Dull? Are you on the right channel? Finding nothing dull at all about it, in fact parts are so good they have me tearing up knowing whats to come. Miranda is a magnificent Lee Scoresby (a relatively minor part really boosted by his energy) and I can only dream of the work McAvoy and Scott are yet to do. X
