They haven't said it will be 8 hours. They might be 45 minute episodes. We just don't know yet.
It could, of course, be the classic 30 minute slot - the sort that used to be the staple of Sunday teatime programming. Box of Delight, Five Children and It etc
I suspect 40-45 minutes would work - Dr Who length. A form that the fantasy audience are used to.

Oh right - my bad - they are doing all 3 books in 8 episodes according to some press reports (which is not what I heard when it was first announced)
So they will have to be hour long episodes to pack it all in.
Shame - I was hoping for a longer form

all 3 books in 8 episodes I thought the first book was tightly plotted, but the second and third meandered quite a bit. A lot of the third was that Jane Goodall-ish section with the ex-nun and the wheeled creatures, which they could easily lose. If it's a success, they've got the prequels to go at afterwards - assuming Pullman doesn't do a Hilary Mantel or George RR Martin and take forever!

He has already finished book 2 of The Book of Dust. So hopefully book 3 will follow without too much of a delay. He has been thinking about it for long enough

All three books in 8 episodes would be a criminal waste. The BBC is becoming the Readers Digest of broadcasting.

Related, but I've just seen articles saying the BBC may be doing a 6 part series (and hopefully ongoing) based on some of Terry Pratchett's city Watch books. I have heard these rumours/hopes before, but with Good Omens coming up maybe this one will actually happen. Shame they dismantled the Dickensian set - something in that style would be fantastic.

James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter, Clarke Peters as the college master.

Much as I like Ruth Wilson, I just can't see her as Mrs Coulter. Not sure why, but she doesn't seem to fit how I imagine her to be. She can certainly be scary enough!

And James McAvoy is rather boyish and sensitive, though admittedly I haven't seen his recent stuff so he may have got more rugged. I thought the casting in the film was great, but maybe they want to distance themselves from it and go for a different take on the characters.

I guess I always have Patricia Hodge in mind for Mrs C - she did it so well in the original stage version. Certainly it is her voice I hear when reading the books

Almost all the characters seem to have been cast younger than the film.

Almost all the characters seem to have been cast younger than the film. I like James McAvoy though I think his Marvel/X Men role is a factor here to bring in more American viewers. I thought Hayley Atwell and Matthew MacFadyen was odd casting for the BBC/Starz Howards End but it brought in the Marvel and Ripper Street/Darcy fans.

Ruth WIlson is 36, and Mrs Coulter is 35 in the first book, so it seems perfectly appropriate to me, though personally I'd been hoping for Romola Garai.

The child actress playing Lyra was also in Wolverine so they seem to be very much going for the Marvel fandom with this!

I thought I read it was 8 episodes for the whole trilogy 40 episodes across 5 series, 8 1-hour episodes in each, according to Den of Geek. Going for the full Game of Thrones, though that sounds like a hell of a lot given the characters aren't that appealing. I suppose if they're casting the likes of James McAvoy they might make some of them a bit nicer, though with the exception of Lee and Hester I wasn't that bothered about the fates of the characters in the original novel as I didn't really warm to them.

More cast names just released for this - interestingly, it also includes Anne-Marie Duff, though from what I remember of the plot I don't think she'll have scenes with her ex (??).
I think they're filming this and Endeavour in Oxford at the moment - must be nice and toasty for them. And they're currently filming David Copperfield in various locations, poor sods.

Netflix have just announced they're going to adapt the Narnia books. Given Pullman's vociferous dislike of, but obvious debt to C.S. Lewis, it'll be interesting to see these two going head-to-head.

As long as they do them all. It always irritates me when they always seem to ignore 'The Magician's Nephew' and 'The Horse and His Boy'. There are SEVEN books Netflix and don't you forget it!

'The Magician's Nephew' and 'The Horse and His Boy' They're two of my favourites! I hope they do them, and do them well (please don't screw up the eeriness of Charn). There's a lot of 'high fantasy' in the offing, from the looks of it - Amazon are redoing Lord of the Rings, Neil Gaiman has got his mitts on Mervyn Peake, and there will probably be Game of Thrones prequels too. And then there's all the comics to go at - Watchmen and possibly Judge Dredd getting spin-off series set in their 'universes'.
