The Chinese takeaway at the end of my road is open, hurrah!
And my shed has become a perfect fridge - or rather, a freezer - went to extract a beer to go with said takeaway and found two bottles frozen together!

Trapped is brilliant ! I can’t wait for series 2. Count me as a Trapped fan too! I'm a big lover of all things Icelandic and the scenery is just breathtaking, it also has the funniest chase scene ever. Fortitude is another, totally bonkers though. They've got a final four episode season on later in the year. Supposedly Norway but filmed in Iceland. Anyone know of any other good snowy Scandinavian dramas? Here has been at a virtual standstill for a couple of days (I'm up in the Pennines and the nearby cross Pennine routes have been closed). I can’t think of any particularly snowy Scandinavian dramas, but as I mentioned in a previous post Acquitted is excellent (Norwegian, nice fjord setting). I’m looking forward to the second series of both Trapped and Thicker than Water (Swedish drama about family rivalries). Fortitude lost me eventually I’m afraid, but if you feel like branching out , the Dutch series Black Widow is very good. Sorry to go off the snow day topic!

Quick tip for anyone who has an attic full of water pipes: keep the hatch open. The heat that rises will stop the pipes freezing. Just be careful not to make the loft too warm, or you might receive a visit from the boys in blue. Police officers in West Yorkshire spotted a house without a single flake of snow on the roof, and when they went to investigate, they found a cannabis farm.

Had no heating or hot water since weds
The drains has frozen
Meaning kitchen sink wasn’t draining
Couldn’t use washing machine or dishwasher
Thought about going to buy some heaters from Argos
Changed my mind and went to The Savoy for 2 nights instead
All is back to normal Now
I shall go to temple and give thanks to god and do some good works
Feel joyful in my heart
Sorry and love to all those suffering due to the food in any such way
It’s quite upsetting

Now you're back @parsley (yes, you've been missed!) I've been dying to know your take on the Chess fiasco. Any chance you could let us know over there?

Now you're back @parsley (yes, you've been missed!) I've been dying to know your take on the Chess fiasco. Any chance you could let us know over there? In fact nothing too controversial to say Other than seeing Alexandra Burke’s name Listed on a musical At an “opera house” Seems wrong However You all know what I think of the Coliseum I boycotted it a long time ago It’s cheap and nasty and crappy And so bad are my experiences there That the name of the venue tarnishes whatever is being programmed Which I realise may be an unfair bias Sort of - if someone or some show is so desperate They have to associate with the Coliseum Then I am not interested Perhaps closing the ENO would help as most of the woes of this venue are down to how inferior an opera company they are I only go there to use the toilets nowadays if I am passing and my bladder is brimming

They are talking about exchanging tickets for other shows though, but understandably need to investigate the logistics of that. But some people can make the show today, so why should they be penalised because others can’t?

My bathroom has thawed out at last.
I went out today. The roads are completely clear once out of the residential areas but strangely quiet, and it felt more like early on a Sunday morning than a Saturday. I think most people must be looking out their windows and seeing streets full of snow and assuming it's like that everywhere. The snow was bad on my street — when I went to the car there was someone with a shovel clearing a section so a car could get up the hill — but once I was on to the through routes everything was fine.

But some people can make the show today, so why should they be penalised because others can’t? Well if I'm wrong I'm wrong. I was reading (a couple of hours ago so maybe they changed their minds) that they were keeping their strict no refunds or exchanges policy. I got this from friends who had rung them, who couldn't get there because of the snow, not the article above. But if they've changed their stance then good on them. I think it's a bit strong suggesting I was 'penalizing' those who can get there...I was only criticizing the stance of not offering exchanges for those who couldn't given the extenuating circumstances.

The complaint seems to be that the show has not been cancelled. That’s what’s people think should have happened. Tickets would then have been refunded, but as the show is going ahead they won’t be refunded. My comment about people being penalised related to that. Why should the show be cancelled when there are people who *can* get there?

Looks like they are going to be flexible but haven't quite worked out the details yet

Why should the show be cancelled when there are people who *can* get there? Where on earth did I say the show should have been cancelled? All I have commented on is that the theatre should try and be more accommodating with refund/exchange policy. As long as it's safe to do so then of course they should go ahead with the show.

Why should the show be cancelled when there are people who *can* get there? Well, if the police are advising the public only to travel if absolutely necessary, that would seem to be a fairly compelling reason.

I like the Kate Bush album Fifty Words For Snow but I can only play it when it’s actually snowing.
Same as December Will Be Magic... I can only play that in your actual December.

Overkill by First Great Western who decided to keep the Gatwick - Reading route closed for a second day despite the forecast thaw and other train operating companies' services (Southern and SWT) whizzing busily round the area. So another epic journey for me, as it took all day just to go to and from a matinee. And we didn't get much respite from one sort of bad weather before the next set in: as I entered the theatre the thaw was well under way but there was still plenty of snow to be seen, whereas I emerged a few hours later into the heavy rain which had been predicted to follow. So I suppose this will be another year when winter hangs around unduly, meaning we don't get spring but go straight into summer in due course...

We have light rain this morning, so the snow will probably be gone by the morning.
News reporters that spent all last week standing by closed motorways will spend all next week standing by flooded rivers!

I so wish we still had public information films. Every time there is severe weather people die trying to rescue dogs that have jumped into frozen water, high seas or flooded rivers. They were made by the Central Office of Information that was shut down in 2011, in what I can only assume was the spirit of Harry Lime - hey, we're saving money - do we really care if a few dots stop moving?
