Interesting post from Autograph - the audio supplier - from the original production at Palais des Sports in Paris 1980

It'll be odd not seeing the Les Mis signage on the Queens for the next few months but I suspect we'll be treated to some new signage once the concert version is done and dusted at the Gielgud.

I'm not sure the facade is listed as it was built in the 50s, the grade II listing probably pertains to the Edwardian theatre proper.

The original production IS leaving forever.
The cheap cut-down new version is coming a poor imitation of the original.

Only external changes are 5th floor terrace bar and a new door on the side.

I'm not expecting anything drastic but I wonder if we might see a new smaller signage compared to what they've used before, I've noticed with his other refurbs, they've opted for a more minimal look.

There's no planning in for changes to signage. They're having new glass doors put in and the planning for these seems to suggest the existing signage continuing.

Was it not Cameron’s intention to fix the facade in keeping with the original? I’m sure I remember that being said at one point.

Fascinating tonight to re-read John Napier’s interview with The Stage(6/2/2019)....a very honest, searing and damning indictment of how he feels about the dynamic and organic feel of the original LM being replaced with stage cloths and people ‘pushing things on and off stage’ in the new version. He clearly feels aggrieved towards CM on a number of counts and contrasts that with how he feels ALW has treated him more fairly with new productions of shows like Starlight in Germany.

Was it not Cameron’s intention to fix the facade in keeping with the original? I’m sure I remember that being said at one point. That was a plan for 10 or 15 years. However, allegedly, the rebuilt façade itself has now become listed and it’s no longer possible to rebuild the original design.

The thing is, this won't affect attendance one bit. The general public aren't going to care about the lack of revolve or that it's a new production.

I think someone linked to a protest petition several pages back and it had a mere 5000 signatures. The minority will care. But the minority aren’t generating the ££

They did want to re-model the front to put it back to how it was pre-war and match the Gielgud. Sadly, the 1950s one is now listed, so they can't. Inside, the slips are probably going, with new boxes replacing them. The dress circle gets an extra row, the uppers loses the centre aisle. Some seats in all areas are indeed being held off-sale while they figure out sightlines as the stage edges are remodelled for the new boxes.
I'm now wondering why such an ugly facade is listed. I am likewise baffled by the listing of the Barbican & Southbank Centre.
They really are doing their best to remove all the cheaper seats that aren't up in the Gods, aren't they? First row BB stalls was taken out & now if the slips are going too that leaves nothing below upeer circle level.

Please report back if anything special happens We all got champagne (including the cast onstage!), there were streamers, three cheers, a toast to Les Mis and we didn't have to listen to a Cameron Mackintosh speech - it was all rather lovely! Cracking show too!!
