Oh what utter nonsense. The audience when I saw it was great, they loved it but they weren't screaming and hollering during the show either.
In fact, the most offensive thing about the show when I saw it was the frock that Vanessa Feltz decided to give an outing to on that particular night.

Are people just repeatedly missing that this story is based on the experience of a real, flamboyant young aspiring drag queen? But that’s just it. It doesn’t feel real or authentic! It’s quite clear that the writer has no clue how teenagers talk to each other. The ensemble are lazy, minus one or two. The book is the weak link in this production, I still cannot wrap my head around how it’s run for so long. I would say that it was written like a pantomime but that would be an insult to pantomimes everywhere. But, if you’re looking for a light and fluffy show; sure. It attracts a very specific audience; middle aged wine guzzling women, who think it’s ok to scream and holler during a show. If all of this appeals to you; you’ll love it... maybe stop by the Haymarket, I think they have a show on for people of a similar calibre. Really? What a delight you are. As for a very specific audience, I don't agree with you on that at all. And teenagers don't talk that way to each other? Do bear in mind this is not based on teenage life now, it is based on when the real Jamie went through this. And teenagers did talk to each other like that then.

And in my opinion, this production takes exaggeration to the next galaxy and beyond, but yet the show thinks that it’s this serious trailblazing story and it’s far from it. I came away from this show quite unimpressed I have to be honest besides Pretty there weren't that many likeable characters and the story felt overly melodramatic at points. I will say Layton is fabulous in the role but it needed some work to its book and the songs weren't very memorable.
I remember thinking it'd make a good Billy Elliot style film so maybe it will work better in that medium.
I like camp, gay comedy but this just didn't land in those parts for me, the more poignant father/son dynamic was great so was the story with his mother being a good parent. The song about Climbing a Wall and He's my boy stood out although I'd be hard pressed to remember the others.
It's a mixed bag for me. Jamie didn't seem like a likable lead to me most of the time although Layton gave him a spark in his song and dance numbers I got different vibes of Jamie during his spoken dialogue VS singing. I dunno if anyone else got this vibe?
I'd give it around 3/5 and will watch it again in film medium we're I think it may suit the material slightly better.

Shane Richie is starring in The Entertainer which is touring from 27 August, so I would have thought any significant extension of his role as Hugo in ... Jamie beyond the beginning of May is unlikely.

Shane Richie is starring in The Entertainer which is touring from 27 August, so I would have thought any significant extension of his role as Hugo in ... Jamie beyond the beginning of May is unlikely. He was talking on Radio 2 earlier this morning, saying he only has another six weeks to go, so no, he won't be extending.

Anyone know of any dates that Melissa Jacques will be performing as Margaret? Saw her in January, and it was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen - desperate to take my friends! She too is my favourite Margaret by a mile. She has such depth and credibility to her portrayal of Margaret.
