Oh for god sake. I wanna see it because its got great reviews and I've had friends rave so I wanna see it for that reason alone. With regard to my not being a fan of the kind of camp I am speaking of, I'm not trying to offend or piss anyone off, but I'm speaking of the kind of camp where certain males put on an act to make themselves more over the top than they actually are. Think Laganja Estranja. Everyone knew she was acting more over the top and ridiculous to get more attention on RuPaul, even the other queens called her out for it. I'm a fan of Laganja as Laganja, not by that over the top, ridiculousness that she was putting across to make herself into a fake version of what she really was as a perfomer. It made her unlikeable. From trailers and promos, I was starting to get the same vibe from this show that it was going to be like that, which for me I am not a fan of. It just doesn't work for me personally, but I get that there are some who love and adore that crap, and thats fine. I'm glad to hear it is not like that, so I feel more excited by the show now simlly because I know I'm not getting two hours of that.

This is a forum where we can always speak freely and is based on opinion. You stated your opinion and while some may not agree, it doesn't give them the right to jump all over you. As gay people, we are hyper aware of how the world looks at us and the image we portray in our daily lives has a lot to do with that. Its like in a gay pride parade - the photos that make it in the paper are of half naked ultra camp people. That doesn't represent me and can perpetuate negative stereotypes. Just like there are many flavors of straight people, there are many flavors of gay people.

I can accept that these images can be considered stereotypes- but I'm not sure why you say they're negative or could be perceived as negative, when what we're talking about are flamboyancy and sexual freedom? I don't want to nitpick on what you said until I'm clear what you mean, but I think it's an interesting choice of words when you use describe these stereotypes as negative.

Who gives a sh*t what I say?! I have met several gay males who one on one are one thing, but to a larger group, like friggin' Kylie Minogue on prozac. Maybe its just my experience, but it doesn't appeal to me.

I do like drag queen acts, but I think drag needs to be extremely sharp and witty (in addition to the great song/dance performance routine). Kinky Boots is a great example. The songs are great, the staging is pretty good, but after listening to the Broadway cast recording and adoring it, I was just so aghast at how banal, basic and pedestrian the book scenes were, and how horrible the non-singing drag scenes are. As I gay man sitting in the middle of a rather mixed crowd and having seen tons of drag in every major gay town in the US, I felt like an outsider considering how the Kinky Boots audience were enjoying this very basic and unevolved basic drag schtick. Call me a drag snob. Or a snob? At any rate, drawing from my own experience..I've had my share of controversy on this forum for very strong sometimes abrasive opinions, but I think the ground rule to having these strong opinions is by experiencing the work first hand. No bootlegs, no YouTube clips, no reviews. Go see it.

No I agree, and I intended on seeing it regardless, despite apprehension, and now am more excited to see it having heard it was not what I was expecting it to be. As you used Kinky Boots as an example, thats one of my favourite musicals, but I accept your opinion as your opinion.

It’s not REALLY about the drag.. The whole I”I want to go to the prom in drag” is just the device used to shine a light on his relationships with his Mum, friends and his absent father. It could be about any type of outsider, I suppose the drag/gender identity thing is quite current so was an obvious choice.

Your right the drag thing is never really shown unless it’s changed you never actually see him perform it’s the whole coming out and going to prom in a dress story and the relationship between mother and son .. don’t forget it’s based on the true life of Jamie from bbc3 documentary some of the dialogue is straight from the tv programme

This is getting rather heated!! I can see where the advertising points in one direction, I suppose to make it stand out. This may give a slightly misleading view of what the show is about , rather than just a story about a boys struggle with himself. Anyway I can't wait to see it as a northern guy(gay!) I always love a northern musical.

I'm also slightly apprehensive because, and I know I shouldn't say this because some queen is bound to get offended so sorry in advance, but I get the vibe from the trailers and promos that lead it is the kind of camp that I'm just not a fan of. I get vibes of Laganja Estranja when she is being fake bitch, and for me, I'm just not a fan of that kind of camp, over the top, fake queen realness. So again, I'm hoping I'm wrong, because I couldn't deal with two hours of that? I'm generally not a fan of that kind of camp either, but I saw '...Jamie' in Sheffield (and didn't book until after the reviews appeared) and loved it. Without giving too much about the plot away, a big part of the show's plot is the way Jamie learns to negotiate the space between a combative (and admittedly fabulous) drag persona and his desire to cross-dress as himself. There's a bit of that "fake queen realness" in there, certainly, but it's not what the show is about.

I don't think this is a reduced price offer though (apart from maybe a slight reduction in the Grand Circle prices). Those are the prices that are offered when booked through the website. Time Out doesn't mention any reduction The preview prices I have are £55 / £39.50, premiums £75. Looked like a reduction to me. A way to fill seats, I was thinking. Yes they are the preview prices but they are not more reduced through the Time Out offer. That's the prices on the website for the preview dates anyway

The video you posted it no longer available. It was during the day but I couldn't watch it. Not sure why it has been removed, the still looked like it was an official promotional video. They seem to have taken down the longer version for some reason. The shorter version is still up though

Flamboyancy is perceived as negative in the world and “queeny” and is used by the rest of the world to think of gay people as less than. I of course think this is sad and ridulous but it is what it is. Why do you think people use this as a basis of why gay marriage is wrong? While I agree with you that it’s wrong to think of this as negative, it’s unfortunately a fact of life at the moment. Again, it’s about comfort level with oneself. The key is to live your life in an authentic way for yourself and let the haters hate. Isn’t that what Jamie is trying to do?!?

Apparently the cast were “laying down their vocals” for tracks from the show last week. Whether this was for promo purposes or a cast recording remains to be seen I guess.
I’m hoping for the latter!

Well I popped in at the weekend to see how it was all going and to wish everyone good luck. I don't know what you're all going to drink when the show actually opens though. Awkward.

£20 front row lottery announced! Also some side dress circle seats for first week down to just £10! Thanks for the heads up on those £10 dress circle seats. Grabbed one for Wed and it's not even restricted view so massive bargain. Plus love when you click on the seat it gives you a picture of the view. Well done Nimex too as the plan was showing 2 seats together and I thought it would never let me buy just one and it did. And no booking or transaction fee so I'm well chuffed.

Two nice plugs on Radio 2 yesterday for Everybody's Talking. The first from Michael Ball, who saw it in Sheffield, so knows what he's talking about. He'll be joined by Dan Gillespie Sells on his show next Sunday.
The other was from Elaine Paige, who hasn't yet seen it for free. At the request of a listener, she played a song from the show, sung, kinda, in a Sheffield accent.
