So. For those who like that sort of thing, the new trailer is out for the remake of 'Murder On The Orient Express' starring everyone's favourite pin-up Tom Bateman.
Lots of others stage types are on board supporting Tom. Dame Judi, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr, Miranda Raison and dear old Kenny B. There are some movie folk too. Daisy Ridley, Olivia Colman, Johnny Depp, Penny Cruz amongst others and Michelle Pfeiffer looking FAB-U-LOUS. With a capital FAB-U-LOUS.
I wonder who did it?

That is nothing like Poirot is described in the books (although neither was the Peter Ustinov version either) and it looks like some liberties have been taken with the plot too. Oh and Judi playing Judi again. Wendy Hiller was the definitive Princess Dragomiroff and Albert Finney has never been surpassed as Poirot.
However I’ll go see it because I love me a star studded Aggie.

The best thing for me about the original film was the music by Richard Rodney Bennett. I wasn't impressed by the music in the trailer but it did look very stylish.

I'm looking forward to it, mainly for the cast and because it's Branagh's (and I happen to love Agatha Christie's stuff).
It seems a bit too action-packed, but maybe they put all the action scenes in the trailer.

I'm so torn. The Albert Finney one was perfect. And David Suchet is the perfect Poirot. But then again, I LOVE Kenny B and have done for longer than I've loved anyone except my parents, so obviously I'll go and see it.

Can't see how they hope to better Finney or Suchet versions but they probably don't and are simply relying on lazy youngsters who can't be bothered to watch them.

It seems more like a Christmas telly film to me. The BBC are doing an Agatha Christie for the next few Christmases: I thought this was one when I first heard it announced. Not sure who the audience for the film will be, though there is a trend for (apologies) oldie cinema, so maybe it's pitched at them. The last two films I've been to were playing in almost-empty cinemas, so maybe my taste is weird (The Limehouse Golem and mother!, btw - I enjoyed both) The BBC ones are Sarah Phelps-scripted. I really like her work, pleasingly dark. The BBC Writerswroom website has a really good, long interview/podcast with her on its site. |

I think I will be able to resist the Kenneth Branagh re-make. The grandeur of the Albert Finney version remains with me and David Suchet's attention to detail are enough for me. And, with them being period pieces, they don't age anyway.
Then there is Richard Rodney Bennetts music from the Sidney Lumet version. I can hear it now.........

As much as I love the original film, Albert Finney was so hammy you could practically see him gnawing his way through the scenery mid-shot. Plus he always reminded me of Marcel, one of the characters from the late, great Kenny Everett:  |
