Bake Off in general takes a more 'cumulative' approach even just on the show/day- as in it's all the bakes that day not just the showstopper than always get taken into consideration. And I've no 'evidence' for it other than a memory of it, but I'm sure Mary and Paul have made several comments on the lines of 'a more consistent baker overall' 'has been consistently good' over the years. And it is of course more heavily edited than Strictly so we don't get all the judges comments/get what the producers want us to see!

Of course what is amusing is that we accept the 'marking' which involves no actual marks for this and other cookery shows but scrutinise the marking for Strictly (and I suppose X factor but I don’t watch that.) and we scrutinise academic results to the point that kids can say they were one mark off a top grade. If marks were awarded for Bake Off would the results be different? Again, just putting it out there.

I think marking each Bake could be an interesting approach- that way there would be a real sense of who is 'in trouble' by the showstopper etc. Could make for 'exciting' TV too, if we're inclined to spice up our cakes!

Can’t stand that Sophie. Smug or what. Ugh. She is everything that reminds me of totally inadequate feelings in the primary school playground when picking up my kids. There were millions of her all over the place. Smugness for England. I couldn't get out of there quickly enough. She brings back all those memories. Stacey should have gone in week 1. So even though Steven had a bad one, she totally deserved to go. At least he tried something difficult. Her stooopid flamingoes could be done in school cookery classes. Liam to win.......

The news of Stacey's homelife came as a big of a surprise today. Given the nature of the competition, it is inevitable that many of the contestants come from financially stable backgrounds. Who else has the time and money to put in the hours of recipe testing necessary to succeed?
But to discover that she is married to the multi-millionaire co-founder of ASOS takes things to quite a different level.
Sophie was extra smug when talking about her 20 years of ballet training. She probably had a pony as well.

Publicly, I am boycotting the new version, but of course I'll have a look!!! The three magic ingredients have gone though, Mary with Paul was good symmetry and of course Mel and Sue were an excellent combination. It will be interesting to see if Noel and Sandi can find that sense of mischief. Will Prue Leith have symmetry with Paul? I can't see it because when she has been a judge on other things, she is quite abrasive. Of course it will be more important than ever to have a group of engaging cooks. Oh, it's all to play for!!!!

Oh Steven. That was yours to lose. A bit sad. Not keen on Smugphie. But she was the best on the day. Kate did well too. But I love the idea of a Steven and Sophie holiday and the Yan/Julia/Flo car karaoke should be made into a new series!

But I love the idea of a Steven and Sophie holiday and the Yan/Julia/Flo car karaoke should be made into a new series! Steven was the worst odds on favourite I've seen for awhile. Back against that all day. Sophie was the best. And amazing how many times this series Kate was the second worst in the week

Boy did Steven really muck that up for himself! Sad as has been mentioned above, was sure he'd win. Kate started well but even though the winner was to be judged on showstopper alone, it just wouldn't have been right for her to win based on the series. Though I did think she'd just clinch it after a pretty great showstopper, but with the events of the episode, I was pleased to see Sophie crowned winner as that really was the right choice on the day. Bring on series 9!!!

Well, it was a good series with a nice mix of characters. I surprised myself by liking Sandi and Noel, though I felt we saw less of them than we did of Mel and Sue. Pru can go as far as I'm concerned. I don't think she makes good telly. And Paul? Paul should get iced and call himself a ginger snap.
Hopefully Channel 4 can run to some air conditioning next year - watching Steven's balloon basket dissolve in front of our eyes was torture.
I would be happy to see Steven, Liam, Yan, Julia or Tom doing a spot on GMTV or somewhere.

Very disappointed for Steven/Stephen
He was the best baker of the series. And as keeps happening, the best baker loses on the final.
Sophie's smugness really did grate on me and Kate should not have got that far though she did better than expected in the final.
No professional baker would undertake an entremet with only a domestic fridge. And that is part of my issue with the way the show has developed. They demand more and more with very tight deadlines and equipment that is just not up to the mark to deliver the pro standards they seek.
The other issue is the focus on design, design, design.
I would much rather they celebrated flavour more. I know viewers can't see tastiness. But I want a cake to taste great. I can forgive scruffy finishing more easily than bland flavours

I guessed Smugphie had won when the negative press on her came out a few days ago.
That showstopper might have been complicated to make but none of them looked great. Underwhelming.
Also, am I the only person to find the term ‘financier sponge’ ridiculous?

I've just discovered Bake Off The Professionals - started yesterday on channel 4. I loved it - gorgeous Liam (he wot was robbed in the last series) is presenting (not bad at all for a first dib) with a comedian who's actually quite bearable. (Tom Allen - did the Extra Slice a couple of times I think.) Judges are Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin (they're tough cookies, definitely no cuddly Mary) and the contestants seem to be a great bunch. I was actually sad that someone had to go home.

Did you see the previous series that were shown on BBC2 under the name of Creme de la Creme I think? I love this show and am fascinated about how they can make all these pastries look so damn perfect!
The female judge (Cherish?) is very exacting and to the point. Nice to see Hackney Liam on it too. We all wanted him to win regular Bake Off in our house last year!

No dontdreamit , I'd never heard of it before. I knew there was a professional Masterchef Australia spin-off and that was it. Just found it by accident on Catch-up. I think they've played a blinder getting Liam to present - a lot of people wanted to adopt him to win I think.

They are well worth watching if you can get the chance- the last series was presented by Angus Deaton who was surprisingly good, and the first series by a food presenter whose name escapes me. They also had a third judge on the first series who was really good but simply disappeared when series two came on!

Tom Kerridge. I liked them enough but I don’t think they’ve learnt from the mistakes of the previous series. I like Tom Allen so I’m glad he’s getting some exposure but I’m not sure I can be bothered with this series.

Liam wasn’t given a lot to do was he? Hopefully he’ll get more confidence as it progresses. Never heard of Tom Allen before but really liked him. I really like this format but hate Tom Kerridge and Angus Dayton who presented on the Beeb so pleased to have likeable presenters this time.
Cherish is fabulous and Benoit makes eating cake look sexy. When I eat cake (which is often) I look very un-sexy and a bit deranged.
