Giving away the ending is kind of a stupid idea imo

Interesting to see whether the facebook live stuff has the desired effect. Watched the 'blue' carpet stuff, enjoyable enough, some cool interviews and well presented. Obviously being done for promotion as tickets sales maybe aren't that great, but viewers peaked at around only 180 people. We'll see whether there's many more for the actual performance. But I just don't know whether letting the entirety of facebook see the most famous number from the show is a good idea, it might make some audiences feel they've seen the bit they know and now have no reason to see the entire thing! But the biggest question is just 'why?'. Promotion for the show or not, I'm still a bit baffled as to why they felt the need to do any sort of live streaming for the press night of this show in particular!
Biggins (he's there, of course. Would go to the opening of a bag of crisps!) said the only thing that ruins a press night are the critics, and luckily they won't be there tonight. Not that he'd be necessarily in the know, but is this not being re-reviewed like other Chichester transfers then? I can see why not - they already have their great Chichester reviews on the marquee so may be pointless, but would add extra promotion to have West End quality reviews, surely?

Maybe the critics already reviewed it during the previews. They clearly did that for School of Rock, given the number of reviews that appeared just after 10pm on Monday evening. Well, either that or the critics were breaking some speed-typing records!

It's not unusual for critics to attend the last previews

Ah right yes I understand now - sounded slightly as if the show wasn't being reviewed at all!

Well that was alright. Peaked at about just over 500 views live, very well filmed indeed for the most part, but whether it was just a lack of atmosphere translating from the auditorium to facebook or what I don't know, but I was left a little cold by that performance. I was waiting for something big to happen in Flash, Bang, Wallop!, a big moment or culmination or climax or whatever you lie, but it just all seemed a little disjointed and flat, even the ending. A bit of a missed opportunity it felt like, to me! But again, maybe it's different seeing it live at the end of the show, and maybe it's Pick Out A Simple Tune that is the standout moment in this new version, but I actually didn't feel like I *had* to go see this show off the back of that number. And the acting left a little to be desired, too...
But having said *all* of that, no one could fault the energy. And Charlie seemed to have even more energy in him than the most energetic person from the rest of the cast. There is indeed something about him!

The ensemble all singing together sounds awesome

Agree that what happens live wasn't captured on the live stream tonight, the atmosphere didn't translate and yes the acting did look a little flat.
Pick out a Simple Tune I think was a bigger number in this than Flash Bang Wallop, I had similar feelings watching it this week that it didn't quite pack the huge punch it did in the original.
But I thought the filming just was great, and it was lovely to see the curtain call, I wish it hadn't faded out I wanted to hear all of the exit music!! (bit of a nerd like that!)
Also interesting to see that while the numbers did peak at around 500, both the blue carpet and this are now showing 3k views under the video so it got decent numbers from somewhere

For me it was hovering between 8-900 viewers for the most part and even hit 1000 at one point? Who knows.
Good to see, I hope to catch it again once more during the run.

Ah interesting about the views, would be a shame for them to go through all that trouble and not get recognition for it. And of course the videos are archived to watch again at any time so anyone who couldn't/didn't watch live can watch whenever and that'll bump the view count up considerably I should think!
It's positive to hear that the atmosphere in the theatre does make this number something more, but a shame that it couldn't be captured fully on a video that is supposed to get punters in!

Biggins (he's there, of course. Would go to the opening of a bag of crisps!) said the only thing that ruins a press night are the critics, and luckily they won't be there tonight. Tonight is also the press night of Greg Doran's RSC production of The Tempest with Simon Russell Beale. Lead critics will obviously prioritise that over the transfer of a musical which was reviewed (not especially favourably) when it opened just a few months ago.

Sorry to have to say the 'b' word but I was invited as a blogger tonight. There were plenty of us but didn't spot any bigwig critics.
Great show if a little fluffy and outdated. Charlie Stemp is a total star, agree 100% with suggestions that he'll up up for an Olivier. Noticed how brilliant the whole cast was though. Ensemble really stood out!
Heading home on a 2 hr megabus now so I'll post more thoughts tomorrow. Seeing on Twitter that it's already gathering 5 star reviews though.

I wandered past last night to see Baron Fellowes of West Stafford (aka Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes) arriving and getting attention. Coincidentally (as he wrote the book for Half a Sixpence) I was in my way to School of Rock for which he also is credited.

Pick Out a Simple Tune by far is the show stopper of the night! The audience really went wild after that one, especially where I was sat in the full Upper Circle. It was one of those moments where the applause afterward kept going longer than it had the entire rest of the show, and it really deserved it, a fanastic production number!

I do hope some good reviews help this production. I'm sure it deserves a healthy run. However I just looked on the delfont website for tickets and it still seems barely any have sold at all.

Just thought I'd mention that the Cast Recording was released today and it's glorious - the score sounds sublime, all the performances are brilliant and Cam Mac really has perfected the art of live recording - apparently this was recorded over the last 3 shows in Chichester but it sounds like studio quality!

Agree. Just downloaded it too and had a quick flick through the tracks. It really is a great recording. No overture on the cd. Was there one? I saw it in Chichester but can't remember now.

I'm enjoying the CD of this, but miss Economy as it was a great song for the gang of friends. I'm worried that Stiles and Drewe are getting a bit predictable...Betty Blues Eyes has been the only one that was a little surprising, and complex and a little dark. I love that show. I'm glad in Sixpence they have solved the banjo problem.....what does HGWells write about said banjo.
