There's not much left of the original show, is there? I think Mackintosh said in an interview that it is 80% a new show. Though, of course, I wouldn't know having not seen either of them.

I've been listening to the recording and it reminds me why I hated this production. They have ruined this show. -All charm has been removed. The arrogance of them all to mess around with the original score and replace some of it with cutesy wootsey new forgettable music
And bored of all of Mackintoshes shows being orchestrated exactly the same.

I listened to the original, and I thought that was extremely boring. Except for a few songs like flash bang wallop, although that one is a lot better in the new version as well imo.

Well, I was there yesterday evening since Ragtime got cancelled and I really can't say that "nobody is buying tickets" - the stalls were full. Couldn't see thr circles from my seat though. Audience loved it, gave it a standing ovation.
Now I have to say that I don't know the movie or previous versions or songs even. It was a spur of the moment decision at 7pm and it was the only big nee musical I hadn't seen or booked for yet and the theatre needed to be in sprinting distance from Charing Cross. I found it perfectly charming and entertaining, the sets and frocks are gorgeous, the songs and dance routines pretty good and Charlie Stemp is definitely a star in the making.
It's a pity if this show kills itself with its pricing. It's the kind of quaint old-fashioned feel good show that's just perfect right now to forget the sorry state of the world out there for 3 hours. I hope it will find its feet...

I don't understand the love for Charlie Stemp. He's fine, but he's no more a 'star' than any other young west end performer who can sing and dance.

I found him to have a particularly magnetic presence and a lovely genuine warmth on stage.

And why waste our time telling us repeatedly how much you hate it? And all the reasons why... Of course we are all entitled to our (very different) views but there's an arrogance (to use your word) about your posts, almost like you believe you are superior to those of us who actually enjoyed it. (And you can't be serious about Charlie Stemp?!)

I wanted to hear the new songs again to see if they were as bad as I remembered - is that allowed? I honestly thought it was so bad that yes, I struggle to understand how anyone can like it. I saw the matinee and thought it was absolutely wonderful. Charlie was fantastic, but I do wonder how long his energy will last. It's a long show and he's hardly ever off the stage. I hope he doesn't get burnt out.
Very deserving standing O at the end and I would go again it's such a feel good show.
Agree about the criticisms of the photographer, he was unnecessarily camp for a quick snigger from some while I failed to laugh at the portrayal. They are lucky that is such a rousing song so I soon got over it.
What a show, what a performance, what a picture.

Do you think Herbert George wells would recognise any of this? And any deals coming through...I want to see this so much, but with an expensive train trip to begin with, any 'economy' (to mention a much missed song)would help.

It was on the Half Price Ticket Booth all weekend. They offer day seats for £20. And when I asked for "any discounted last minute dayseat" at around 7.10pm after the Ragtime fiasco, they sold me stalls row R for half price (£25) and it was a perfectly fine seat. Though if you take the train just for this, you may nit want to wait that long for a gamble, It's also part of GILT 2017, if you want to book a discounted ticket ahead...

Yes I saw this on twitter a few days ago and agreed 100% with it too. It's a shame as I enjoyed both of those shows but the lack of diversity is so noticeable in Half A Sixpence and just really not acceptable today. Felt the same about the camp stereotyping in School of Rock. It would've been okay if the characterisation wasn't there purely to set up laughs, but that's exactly how it felt and I got the sense that people didn't know whether to laugh or not. Again, not the sort of thing you expect to see from a new show in 2016.

There were black people in Britain before the migrations of the 1950s.

All new musicals should have a diverse cast. Even if it is black people in the ensemble there should be a diverse cast
