Nyssa brings back happy younger memories.
Not sure of the need for two additional assistants alongside Bradley unless he may be a Matt Lucas type character who remains behind. Jodie and Bradley will likely get best lines if all 4 are in Tardis. But we don't know the dynamic of the younger two characters and how they will be brought in.
The Dr has had 3 assistants before many times but storylines then were a slower reveal so they could be given dialog in Tardis and on arrival in new location etc.

Not overly fond of the new line-up, I know Who has had 3 companions several times in the past but more often than not one is left without anything to do for an episode, or they start inventing stupid threats to keep everyone busy for a bit (what exactly did Susan contribute in The Aztecs, or Rory in The Impossible Astronaut?)
I'm unsure about Bradley Walsh. If he's going to be the comedic relief, I just hope they do it better than they did with Matt Lucas last series. He veered from "not very funny" at his most harmless through to "really irritating" at his least.
I would have preferred if they'd just given Jodie one female companion for her first series and then built up the ensemble later. She's a great actress and overloading her with people isn't going to do her any favours.

We really don't know ANYTHING here though. Just because there are three companions listed (are they even all confirmed as companions, or just regular cast members? I feel like the BBC has used the word "friends" WAY more than the word "companion" with this news) doesn't mean they'll all be there right from the get go, or that they'll all be serving the same function, or that they'll all travel with the Doctor, or that they'll all travel with the Doctor at the same time, or anything. We can't even necessarily infer *that* much about their likely roles based on recent Who because there's a new show-runner, and while Chibnall may be discouraged from making any radical changes, there's also the possibility he could be encouraged to go completely crazy if that's what he thinks will serve the show. Other shows handle larger ensembles perfectly well, often in shorter episodes than Who, and if they do end up taking turns sitting episodes out so as not to overload things, then..... well, so what?

My personal view would have been to have gone with just Bradley or Mandip and Tosin. With Bradley and Jodie you could have had a nice dynamic although having an older male companion who is a well known personality with the first female Dr might have slightly overshadowed her. But Jodie's Dr would have the knowledge if we assume Bradley's character will have some humour.
Or you go with Jodie and Mandip and Tosin, Jodie is the eldest of those 3 and the other two will be her foils and without Bradley there, it gives them a bigger part and enables their characters to become established.
Good to see a first Asian assistant in Mandip or first one in a long time, I cannot think of one but please correct me if I have missed one.
It could almost be seen as they are trying to please everyone - female Dr, Asian and Black Assistants and a well known comedy type assistant in Bradley to please traditionalists.
I just hope the dynamic does work and that Mandip and Tosin get the chance to shine in what is their biggest roles to date.

Don’t underestimate Jodie Whittaker’s comedy skills, she may be more recently known for serious drama but she will more than hold her own with Walsh (and he also seems to have been getting more serious roles recently too).

I'm sure she could easily outperform Bradley, I'm just worried the show will be swamped and she'll get half as much screen time as the previous doctors because they have to laboriously go round all of the companions to hear what they think about everything / see their domestic issues.

Yeah but as Baemax said, we have absolutely no idea if all 3 of them are indeed full-time companions and if they'll all be travelling with her the whole time for the entire series.

Well. Here she is in a rather delightful costume choice. Not sure about the breeze on her legs when she goes to some of the colder planets.

That's awful, the kind of costume (not clothes, that's definitely a costume) that people think the Doctor wore in the late 80s when the show was a national joke.
Chibbers must go!

..... on the back of one costume, the showrunner's entire work is judged to be subpar? Have you ever heard the idea "don't knock it until you've tried it"?

Well I like it. It's quirky, it has nods to previous incarnations, the colours are good and it will be quite simple for the cosplayers to reproduce. Plus I think the shapes work well for Jodie's frame.

I hate this look... Nothing about Doctor 13 looks promising or exciting. Just for the record: I don't have a problem with woman Doctor. We've just had a smashing woman Master, after all.

I thought that by calling him Chibbers it would have clearly highlighted that I wasn't actually being serious about him going. The costume is still eyeboggingly awful though. Even June Hudson circa Series B of Blakes 7 would never have come out with that.

I was listening to BBC Radio Sheffield on the way home yesterday teatime. Now, @emicardiff, I know you get all possessive, but it seems the cast and crew of Doctor Who have spent the last week filming in the steel city. Do you not have a bus station in Cardiff? Sheffield is hardly Preston!!!
The Council will probably plant a commemorative tree. (A bit of local politics there.)

Or have BBC budget cuts got so bad that the annual Dr Who jaunt 'abroad' has had to scale back to Sheffield? Midway through typing though I've been reminded me that we in fact, do not currently have a bus station in Cardiff. It's under 'redevelopment' but Newport does and that's 10 minutes up the road....

a woman in the Tardis.... Not just a woman, but a Yorkshirewoman to boot. Perhaps part of her deal is that some of the filming has to take place on home soil?

Anyone else excited for tonight's special? I'm really excited. Although I still think the regeneration would always have so much more impact if they didn't announce who the new Doctor will be (or even that there will be a new Doctor) in advance. Just imagine the impact it would have if you're just watching the show and suddenly the Doctor regenerates and only then do you find out who will take over the role.

I enjoyed this one far more than reccent Xmas specials- I thought it was a simple (sometimes a good thing Moff!) but sweet and effective tale for Christmas. Love David Bradley anyway and his first Doctor was excellent- enough of himself and enough of an 'impression' to work. And I thought Gatiss was great, with his 'Mycroft' hair and that 'tache. And the ending had me weeping from 'Silent Night' to the end. I always cry when the Doctor regenerates but I admit to some 'Happy tears' when I first saw Jodie- it really does mean a lot that she's a she. And she is going to be fabulous.
Capaldi had a lovely goodbye speech as well. Fitting for him, it's just a shame he wasn't given this type of good material more often. Still farewell grumpy Scottish Doctor you did well, and you'll be missed. (Just not that annoying companion who STILL isn't properly gone)

Just not that annoying companion who STILL isn't properly gone If you mean Bill, I agree. She's intensely annoying and Pearl Mackie's performance is absolute one-note rubbish. I think they should have given the show a sabbatical but I'm really hoping the new era will provide a chance to re-think the companions. One of Moffat's obsessions seemed to be not having people actually properly die. My heart sank when I realised that sodding Bill was still going to be in it. Hopefully she is well and truly gone now. Yes it's a shame PC wasn't given better material during his run, he deserved it - I thought he was good and could have been great with better material. JW looked fantastic. It'd be great if she could stay in the previous Doctor's clothes or at least stay in more male-looking garb. Even just her "Ah, brilliant" line really fired me up. Unless I mis-heard, it sounds like she's doing it Londony? I'd have liked a Yorkshire Doctor but I'll still be glued to it. Probably drooling a bit.

Backdrifter I actually meant Clara. I genuinely liked her to start with and I do love Jenna Coleman. But she gets on my last nerve. (not her fault, Moffat's) But I also agree on the not dying point. I was ok with a one-off return of Bill as this was the end for Capaldi, but I imagine if both he and Moff had stayed longer we'd have had Clara 2.0 with Bill. Ah I thought Jodie sounded Yorkshire in that line...so we'll have to wait and see I guess!

I agree JC is good though and the annoyingness of Clara was due to the writing. Ah interesting, you heard Yorkshireness? I'll have to go back and listen again. Yorkshire would be great but either way's fine. I'll just be gazing at her in rapture anyway. I hope the new era also means less intrusive melodramatic music but I won't hold my breath.

Moffat was obsessed with people dying and then returning in some form due to a timeline crossover type story.
I quite liked Bill so it's a pity she won't return. The new series probably won't be screened until until autumn 2018 and the following one spring 2020. I wish they would do a series each year even if they shortened it to say 8 episodes. If they continue with longer gaps between the series then Jodie could well move on in a couple of years as she is likely to get lots of offers given she is already high profile.
It would be interesting if Jodie decided to have another child to see how the writers try to get round that!
