As we all know, 99% of programmes have an understudy list, and I thought I would start this thread so people can post current understudy lists whether that's a photo of it or text and a musical or play. Myself, like many others, love to know who understudies who and loving trying to catch understudies on for repeat viewings. Living in Scotland means I cant see every show I want nowadays . I ask every so often for them in specific threads but I thought this would come in handy for myself and others. This thread could end up at page 30 within days since The Dreamgirls understudies seem to change everyday... I know Daniel J will have 40 pages worth of understudy lists for us

God only knows what the current situation is!

The most up to date one I have is Harry Potter, which won't be up to date after this weekend and contains spoilers. I do love the idea for this thread though.

I love how the new Fanny Brice alternate is the lady who held the dog in Mary Poppins. I was really racking my brain where I knew her from.

The programme just lists Jennifer and Alexandra Waite-Roberts as the understudies. Alexandra did the scheduled "non Sheridan" show in Newcastle this week.
The Nick Arnstein understudies are Tom Partridge and Peter Nash.

Can someone clarify the differences between - standby, alternative, first cover etc. This gets a bit confusing when the principal may only do 6 out of 8 shows say in Les Mis or more recently Bodyguard. In Les Mis I was told the alternate may just do his set couple of shows and then go home for rest of week, some were Scandinavian guys who'd just fly over for their couple of shows and might do concerts on their none show days.

Can someone clarify the differences between - standby, alternative, first cover etc. An understudy has an ensemble track (usually several smaller parts, e.g. citizen A, student B, palace guard C in Wicked) they play every night. Additionally, they cover 1-2 actors. If they cover their main actor, someone else has to perform in their ensemble track, and that's usually a swing (someone who knows several ensemble tracks). A standby does not have an ensemble part and their only job is to cover one or two roles. When the main actor is performing, they just sit backstage and wait (but are sometimes allowed to go home at the interval or stay within a certain distance to the theatre). The alternate has a guaranteed number of shows per week, usually one or two. For the other shows, they may or may not be in the ensemble. Standbys and alternates are usually used for (vocally) demanding roles (e.g. Elphaba in Wicked, Dewey in School of Rock) or if someone has to look differently (e.g. Elder Cunningham in Book of Mormon must have a different look than all the other posterboy Elders (be it chubby, tall, geeky, ...)) 1st cover is the person who goes on first when the main actor is indisposed and can be a standby, alternate or understudy. 2nd cover is the next in line (e.g. if the first cover is also indisposed or covering a different part). Possible orders can be main - standby - understudy, main - 1st understudy - 2nd understudy.

Alternte is a stupid title for Dewey in School of Rock considering David Flynn basically only did half his performancs a week.

The new The Play That Goes Wrong cast:
Robert, Max & Trevor - Sean Carey Chris, Dennis & Jonathan - Tom Babbage Sandra - Jamie Birkett Annie - Beth Lilly
The programme doesn't list 2nd covers but from past experience the women are obviously 2nd covers for the other role to that of their the first cover, plus at least one of them will be an emergency Trevor cover. The men will probably 2nd cover 2 of the roles they don't first cover. And I've already posted this, in a different format, in The Comedy About A Bank Robbery thread but to have everything in place repeating it here:
Mitch - Sam Fogell, Mike Bodie Caprice - Holly Sumpton, Paula Kay Sam - Sam Fogell, Niall Ransome Freeboys - Mike Bodie, Chris Pizzey Ruth - Paula Kay, Holly Sumpton Smitties - Mike Bodie, Jeremy Lloyd Warren - Niall Ransome, Sam Fogell Cooper - Mike Bodie, Niall Ransome Everyone Else - Niall Ransome, Sam Fogell

Thanks for posting these 😊 hopefully if it catches on eventually all the shows understudies will end up here, it's interesting to see. I know from Les Mis that they still have more covers than the 2nd cover, it's been known for people to go on as Valjean having never done a cover run! I think Killian did ??
Does anyone have the understudies for Lion King ?? It's a show that's almost never spoken of on this forum

Does anyone have the understudies for Lion King ?? It's a show that's almost never spoken of on this forum I've only been around Les Mis for 1 1/2 but yeah I heard that. This cast year in Les Mis they had to get people back to cover roles. In the first week Bradley had to come back to be Enjolras because Chris was ill and Jonny hadn't had his cover run (even though he has been in the cast for ages). Edd Campbell Bird back for Marius when Craig was off and Felix hadn't done a cover run. Matthew Jeans who was a 2nd Enj 15-16 had to come back to be Enjolras but could only do the character track so Oli & Paul did the Enjolras ensemble track. David Burnip & Jordan Lee Davies had to come back to cover as swings. Katy Hanna also had to come back as a swing cover and on the second day had to go on as emg Gavroche. I have been to quite a few where ensemble cast have covered other ensemble tracks. Also this year Oli who doesn't cover Grantaire did it for one show (but he is asst dance captian). And I remember a couple of weeks everyone was ill and pretty much all the ensemble ladies got to go on as Factory Girl.
