Ever the pessimist I'm starting to think Amber being off was always a planned holiday that the producers chose not to tell us about at the risk of the sales taking a hit over the Christmas period. It seems too planned to me that last week they bring in an alternate who knows the role already and all they have to do is go through the movement/direction with her! Amber has been on vocal and bed rest over Christmas judging by her twitter, so it doesn't seem planned to me! And anyway, even if it was planned they didn't need to bring in a third alternate, so not sure how that part of your theory adds up... Im not sure I would trust twitter as proof someone is on bed rest, to be honest I hope im right really and Amber comes back and its nothing serious

She's been out 2 weeks...jeeeez - I wouldn't be surprised at an announcement from the producers that she won't be coming back. Would be a shame! But I'm starting to get the vibes that this show is cursed....

All this talk about Lily Fraser not having the vocals for Deena and not being a match for Effie - surely that's the point they should have very different voices. Isn't Deena supposed to have a light pop voice, a la Diana Ross, whereas Effie has a much bigger soul voice, with one of the key reasons Effie is replaced as lead singer being that Deena's voice would appeal to a wider, whiter, audiences? Certainly it's how it was played in the original Broadway cast - with a huge difference in the vocal abilities of Sheryl Lee Ralph (Deena) and Jennifer Holliday (Effie). It's why (IMHO) the Listen duet doesn't make much sense as it feels like two American Idol type divas doing some sort of sing off - maybe it's a necessary evil in this day and age - but to me it's out of place no matter how well it is sung.
That said I haven't seen Fraser as Deena and maybe in this particular production she doesn't work - but she looks the part (she's gorgeous) - and has a voice which would seem a good fit for Deena as originally conceived.

Does feel like Amber is on a planned holiday rather than off sick if the pictures and video of her celebrating New Years Eve are anything to go by. Seeing Dreamgirls tomorrow at the matinee. Not expecting her to be back.

My issue with Lily was I could barely hear her whenever she sung, as she was always drowned out by backing singers and/or the music. I get that she should be different to Effie, but it would have been nice if she put a bit more power behind the songs.

They were probably trying to drown her out.

It's about time something was announced officially about Amber, her absence is going on a bit. The pictures on Twitter of her on NYE were ill-judged (although she may have been celebrating quietly at home) and - although she filmed it ages ago - she's going to be on prime time tv on Saturday night, which will also raise questions for the uninformed. I hope she's better soon, but it's not being handled very well.

Interesting that the media scrutinised Sheridan so much more than Amber. This hasn't even made the news.

Interesting that the media scrutinised Sheridan so much more than Amber. This hasn't even made the news. There was already a story with SS though wasn't there. And a "reputation". The technical difficulties were a gift to the press. The producers approach is the same though, i.e go into "radio silence" until customers and press get so enraged that they force some sort of explanation. I don't think we're entitled to know all of the personal details of performers health issues but I do think that a holding statement of some sort would be appropriate.

So what happened to Lily Fraser, has she wrecked her voice? Because at the beginning of her run in In the Heights, she was vocally great, most considered her one of, if not the highlight of the cast. Then as time went by people were liking her less and less and now...

Then as time went by people were liking her less and less and now... I liked her in this, but when I saw her In the Heights she was awful vocally! She wrecked her voice I think, I kept wondering how she got the lead and why she was getting these amazing reviews.

So Amber has pneumonia and will return in a few days. The sentence I pick out from this: "The producers have also recently engaged Broadway star Marisha Wallace....alongside the other Effie alternate Karen Mav...." no mention of Ruth what-so-ever.

Gosh it's almost like they're reading the forum isn't it!
Anyway that was all that was needed, thank you Producers!
And Ruth has been dropped then. Thought so.

Still don't understand why Ruth would've been dropped before she even got the chance to perform??
It does look like Marisha is main alternate now? She is permanent, right?

Whoever performd today will be test really for who is the main. Whomefer did the matinee will suposably be the main alternate and currently covering Amber and whoever does the evening will be the second alternate in their usual slot.
