pretend they are awards on a par with other awards Do they, though? It just seems like a bit of fun and a bit of publicity for the popular / populist end of the industry. And most awards ceremonies are daft - they are never conducted on a level playing field. |

Still can't quite believe what i see.. No Awards for Angels is not only a disgrace, it can be count as a crime against theatre and acting itself..

It's dishonest for the WhatsOnStage awards to pretend they are awards on a par with other awards that are decided by a panel who (theoretically) see every show so are (theoretically) able to give a thorough and rounded look at things. If they were more upfront about the fact they are a public-decided popularity contest, I'd mind less. This is my feeling on it- if they just 'owned' the fact they are a publicly voted competition I'd actually really enjoy the awards- a chance to get people not normally 'into' theatre campaigning for their favourites, and showing who is really 'popular' in theatreland. That's all fine with me- bitch about her as you will (and I do) Carrie Hope Fletcher does a lot for young audiences in theatre. So WOS have a 'theatre vlogger award' as well, show you're a certain kind of awards ceremony and we'd all be fine with it. Anyway as I said on Twitter, at least we all know now who'd win in a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Who (and as my friend later said, in a real life fight my money's on Tennant as well) |

I agree. WOS awards are a travesty. David Tennant for "Don Juan in Soho"? Really?... Tennant sending his stepson to collect his award would have been cute if all their kids hadn't been aggressively pushed into acting careers from birth onwards. Are the 'Tennants' going to become the new Redgraves or Foxes? |

Catherine Tate is host this year! I like her a lot, and I think she'll hopefully be very good. She was on This Morning talking about it (you can catch her on +1 in just under an hour I reckon).
They also mentioned that it would be live on ITV on 8th April. Might just be one of those 'not got all the facts' interview closers, or maybe it actually will be live! Fingers crossed!

It likely won't be live on ITV as the Oliviers starts at 7pm and also I think ITV will be the middle of showing their Sunday Night fare of The Durrells and The Good Karma Hospital so it's likely it'll be prerecorded and shown either late or a few days later |

Perhaps, fingers crossed, it will be live on ITV2,3 or 4. I can't really be doing with starting to watch a two hour programme, with endless adverts, at 10pm.

I'm expecting/hoping for a lot of love for Jamie & Angels in America. Jamie is a bit of a question mark for me with this years ceremony. It will undoubtably get Musical, Actor (McCrea) and Actress (Walker) but other than than that, I don't imagine it getting much more, if anything purely because nothing really stands out as award worthy in my opinion, that would stand against other shows especially considering with things like design catagories it is up against plays as well. I'd say Lighting Design I suppose, but I don't expect Lucie Shorthouse to get in like she did at WOS. And I loved the show, but I'm just not sure where else it will fit really. |

Obviously I'm rooting for team 'Angels' but the acting nominations are too complicated for even me to try and guess for that one. I just want Marianne to get recognition for it. And for design as well.
Elsewhere, I really hope Jamie gets what it deserves. And while I'm not as rapturous as some about it Follies deserves recognition for being streets ahead of most other musicals in terms of performance and production.

I'm rooting for Jamie as the underdog to the Hamilton juggernaut, but I expect to be disappointed.
I don't really have a horse in the "play" race, but I'd also be happy for any awards AiA will garner.

I haven't yet seen Hamilton or Bat Out of Hell, but I'll be intrigued to see if Hamilton manages to get into every catagory ala the Tonys as obviously these awards have musicals and plays mixed. So will it get into say Set and Costume given there has been alot of great design this year and only four or five slots? Also, American in Paris will be snubbed and I'm mad about it. And I have a feeling Imelda may not get nominated for Follies.

I shall be expecting a Best Actor nomination for Keith Stevenson in 'Out There On Fried Meat Ridge Road'. If not, I shall curse the Oliviers to have awful red carpet dresses and no publicity from here to eternity.
