Stick my neck out early here and say next year will be all about: Angels In America, The Ferryman, Follies and Hamilton. I can see Paddy Considine giving Nathan Lane a run for his money and Brid Brennan getting best featured actress. I imagine they'll put Lane in for Best Supporting Actor, like Henry Goodman was in 1992. Andrew Garfield is almost a slam-dunk for Best Actor. Then again, this is the Oliviers, so maybe the whole show will be up for Best Family & Entertainment....

The Best Actor award is going to be fierce this year: Andrew Garfield was amazing but so was Paddy Considine. And Richard Coyle and Bertie Carvel were both brilliant in Ink I am glad I don't have to choose.....

Bertie Carvel would be up for Supporting Actor though surely? There's no way that's a lead role.

Conleth Hill for Virginia Woolf? Not sure which category, though. I'd say Imelda and Conleth are leads, Treadaway and Poots supporting.

If I were a producer who wanted to improve Hill's odds though, I'd argue that Martha is the true lead and George is definitely supporting, if only to get Hill in a category that didn't involve either of the Andrews.

I thought Virgina Woofe was last season?
I agree with Bertie Carvel being supporting. Also agree with Richard Prior, Paddy Considtine and Andrew Garfield being all in there for best leading, one phenonomal strong catorgory this season, all 3 are suberb. Nathan Lane not sure if he is going to be leading or supporting he was suberb too. Glad I am not on the award committee!!!

I thought Virgina Woofe was last season? It was a close one! Eligibility for the Olivier Awards just gone was 17th Feb 2016 - 21st Feb 2017. Who's Afraid...started previews on 22nd Feb 2017, with its official opening at the beginning of March 2017, so it'll be considered for the 2018 Olivier Awards, with eligibility dates being presumably 22nd Feb 2017 - 20-something Feb 2018.

True but George has always been classed as a leading role at the Tonys and the Oscars.

I'm calling it now, Audra deserves the win for her performance in Lady Day. It is one of, if not the best, performance by an actress I have ever seen. It's her West End debut and for that to be her debut, I think it will put her right at the forefront of peoples minds and rightly so.
Her main competition will be Imelda, who I saw in the NT Live screening with Virginia Woolf and she was brilliant too. It will ultimately come down to do we honour Imelda doing what she does best or honour Audra who gives a transformative performance, a stunning West End debut and an overall brilliant performance.

Imelda will also be up for Best Actress in a Musical, so it's possible voters will rewards her for that. Although, I'm hearing from the rehearsal room that Janie Dee is the one to look out for!

I've been thinking about this for a while, but the Actress in a Musical catagory, am I the only one struggling to think of who makes it in? I can't think of many bar the two leads in Follies who are shoo ins to get nominations, and Audra was considered for Play at the Tonys with Lady Day, so that removes her if they go the same way. I guess Leanne Cope could get nominated for American in Paris but thr strength is really in the dancing with her, not the singing or acting, though she is great in the show. I'm hoping they put Claire Halse in for 42nd Street though, she is the only one I can think of who I would love to see, but thats of course dependant on if they consider Featured or Leading, even though she is really the female lead of that show but Sheena plays the showier, leading lady type role. Its a tough one.

Peggy is seen as the Featured Actress role. Dame Sheena Easton is going to win anyway so who cares who else is in the category?

It's just crazy to me that that role is considered the leading in 42nd Street when she is in literally one scene in Act 2, whilst Peggy is consistantly in the show throughout. I do wonder if the Oliviers will have a different ruling, and will be interesting to see if a different ruling also throws Audra into musical as she literally sings about 18 songs.

Maybe they might be able to have different rulings for 42nd Street, but Lady Day I'm not so sure as it's absolutely a play with music and is written/officially listed as such. We'll see, though!

I agree with Lady Day that it is a play with music, but to use an example, for the Tonys and Drama Desk, they put her in Play, but the Outer Critics placed her in Musical. It will be interesting to see what they do here. Like she cared anyway, she won all three!

If I may add my two-penneth worth, in the Official London Theatre guide, published by SOLT, who of course also organise the Olivier Awards, Lady Day was listed as a musical.

Does anyone think Stockard Channing may be in with a chance of a Best Actress nomination for Apologia? Saw it last night and she was absolutely terrific, and a star name to boot!
I suspect maybe not as the show doesn't seem to have had much of a buzz around it and it's unlikely to stay in the Olivier memory come next year - however Ed Harris was nominated for a production with a similar amount of buzz in the same venue so it might be possible? Either way I hope Imelda wins for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, best performance I've seen on stage!

I reckon it'll be between The Ferryman and Oslo for Best New play with Ink having an outside chance.

How do they classify what is supporting or leading actress in a play/musical - is it billing/time on stage/amount of numbers etc.
Lets say West Side Story would Anita be lead of supporting if we consider Maria is the lead female or Miss Saigon is Chris supporting if you consider the Engineer the lead male role?
