I avoid actor / musician productions - cannot abide them. Not to say that occasionally they can work but for the most part they are just "cheap" and a way of charging musical theatre prices without an orchestra.
Again, lots of musical shows can be scaled down very successfully into a small space with a three piece band but others really need a BIG production because really that is all that there is to them. Crazy For You is one such show where it's all about the music and the dance. 42nd St would be another

I saw this at the Watermill and thought the actor/musician aspect worked well in the small space. I don't think it translated well at all to a larger venue and there were also other changes which sort of built the show around Tom Chambers. It's like. They'd done it for the Strictly fans but the Watermill version felt like a team effort. Caroline Sheen was excellent as Polly but I didn't really get on board with Charlotte Wakefield. I loved the West End production a few years ago (although I did have a couple of tiny reservations about Clare Foster as someone said above) but I spent. Out of the second half willing this to end. So disappointing after I took a friend based on my enjoyment of the Watermill performance.

So this is in Newcastle now. Poles apart from the incredible quality of the last show, Young Frankenstein.
I am absolutely bored stiff of these kind of shows doing the rounds with "star" names who turn out to be rubbish.
They're not getting my money anymore.

Nearly booked to see this, but I saw a production at the Theatre Royal years ago which I loved so much I'm a bit reluctant to see another one so different. And after the disappointment of 'Sister Act' last year, I'm over the actor-musician shows. Glad I didn't book it now.

I saw it last week in Dublin and thought it was lovely. Not exceptional but very well done with a lovely simplicity and exuberance. The design was lovely and worked really well. I do wish the smaller tours like this would go to the Gaiety or Olympia (where they would be more intimate) as they struggle to fill the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. The energy between the stage and the house in the Bord Gais is always wonderful though even when its not full. Caroline Flack was fine but Charlotte Wakefield was great.

Certainly badly worded, looked as if Caroline had pulled out/had been replaced. She was never advertised for 2018 dates so a replacement was always going to come.

Saw this yesterday at Bristol Hippodrome.
Have seen lots of actor-musician shows over the last few years including A Little Night Music this year and Calamity Jane, Chess and Sunset Boulevard but this just doesn't work.
Crazy for You should be big and lavish- hell Susan Stroman choreographed the original Broadway version.
Thought this looked small and even tacky on the big Hippodrome stage... disappointed.

Saw this on Wednesday afternoon at the B'ham Hippodrome and was rather disappointed by it. Good scenery and I thought the actor musicians were very good but the whole thing was too small scale and not enough dancing (not enough people to be able to do this). Tom Chambers was very good, as was Charlotte Wakefield, but selling it with Caroline Flack as one of the leads is rather misleading. We were "treated" to an extra at the end when Tom Chambers spoke to the audience and told us that his granny,who was sitting in the audience, was 95 that day and then proceeded to ask us to sing Happy Birthday to her!

Just had an email from Sheffield about Flackers being replaced on medical grounds due to an injury. Hollie Casser is the replacement.
Looking forward to this next week.

When I saw the show at the Birmingham Hippodrome, I heard the couple next to me chatting during the interval surprised that she hadn't been on yet. It isn't the biggest or most memorable part. (and we were all sat on the front row!) |

The Flack was apparently replaced mid matinee last Thursday in Birmingham and didn't perform the rest of the week. I'd seen it earlier in the week and chatting to Charlotte Wakefield afterwards, she said some of the cast had been unwell and they'd had to get a specialist replacement drummer in. I didn't realise Caroline had an ongoing back injury,
Someone else had said they were walking to a car park after the show on Wednesday night and Caroline shot past them the other way walking at a rate of knots having departed the theatre very quickly.
The show certainly belonged to Tom and Charlotte though.

I've just seen it today in Sheffield and although initially disappointed with the quite small cast, I really enjoyed it. Definitely Tom Chambers is the star of the show but Charlotte Wakefield has such a lovely voice and could dance her socks off. I was sitting in the gods, so wasn't 100% sure if Caroline Flack was on, but as others have said, it's a small part anyway, but if it was her, she was perfectly ok without being outstanding.

It was a back issue apparently, she was advised by her Dr to pull out. Must be an injury as I don't think the stamina of doing shows would have been an issue as she did the hard Strictly training. Show did a 16 week straight run up to last night, so an ongoing injury would be hard to rest up.

Saw a matinee of this today in Canterbury. Sold out House of mostly older folk and grandchildren who loved it and I Get why. You get a lot for your money especially compared to some of the stuff in the West End. It’s a really really lovely production. A young enthusiastic multitalented cast. Great lead in Tom Chambers who works so hard. Beautiful set and costumes. We all came out humming the tunes and feeling genuinely happy. Biggest surprise of all was Claire Sweeney. Always saw her as a tv actress but she is sensational in this. This gets my vote for sleeper hit of the year.... so far.

It didn’t work for me either, so spoke to the box office and they said it’s only valid on the 2 Top price tickets, Wed-Sat only.
2 of you go and you save £20, better than a kick in the knackers.
