Another day. Another primary school interview. This one made me do a maths test. Please don't tell anyone but..... ...I, er.. um........may have had to send my maths A level student daughter a sneaky text asking her to convert 2/7 (that's two sevenths) into a decimal for me. (I shall keep myself in at playtime and think very carefully about who I have let down..)

What? There are people who haven't committed it to memory? Where did you all go wrong with your lives?

^Apparently @thematthew , sevenths are the only ones not required to be memorised for GCSE or A level, so heaven knows why it was in a key stage 2 test...(unless of course I'd worked the first bit out wrong and the answer wasn't sevenths.....which is what I kept thinking I'd done but really honestly hadn't.... )

I took a piece of paper and managed to work it out, but still checked with a calculator afterwards.

They're making kids memorise that stuff now?! Dear Lord, I'm glad I'm not still at school. Also: yay computers - it took 0.65 seconds for Google to find the answer for me.

Reeee Spect michalnowicki . Paper I had. It was no use to me whatsoever. In my defence (?) I recently revisited maths due to my Open Uni BSc in Computing and IT, so I remembered how to do this (easier than integrals). It's funny how ones approach to certain subjects can change. As a teenager I hated maths. Barely scraped a pass each time. But now, that I wanted to study something and it required maths I thought "Go for it!". I put a lot of time into preparation and resulted in a brilliant result of the final exam last June. And now I have to start revising for my Java exam next Friday. Fun fun fun fun fun...

So to save me checking what is the answer and how much can I apply it to daily life. Only I've reached my mid 40s surviving quite well without it

So to save me checking what is the answer and how much can I apply it to daily life. Only I've reached my mid 40s surviving quite well without it LOL! So have I! (not the mid 40s bit..) I did have to give the answer to only one decimal place, so that incurred another calculation! The original answer to the question (data from a graph) was 6 21ths which broke down to 2 7ths (ya'all keeping up at the back?) This I discovered after my um, little subterfuge was 0.29 (actually, 0.285, but daughter didn't think I'd need 3 decimal places lol!) so I rounded it up to 0.3 all by myself!!

They're making kids memorise that stuff now?! No, absolutely not! That's only for GCSE kind of level. At primary school we have to teach them a gazillion ways of working things out for themselves. The idea is that they discover the methods they understand so everything makes sense. Sort of. I have never had to teach them that sort of calculation - as I already admitted - I had paper but couldn't do it!

Any lady daft concerned enough to believe the newspapers, should free to send 5/6ths or 6/7ths of her supplies to me, Ah! Now Monkey. This is more my type of teaching. Would you rather have 6/7 or 5/6 of a bar of chocolate? (Give reasons for your answer.) Edit: (You may also like to check how many days in a week?)

I'd rather have 1/7. Does little for me. Happy to utilise Monkeys safe disposal service for the remainder in the event my daughter doesn't get there first.

Crumbs, I think I was better off out walking, hot and humid as it was, rather than being stuck indoors fretting over calculations and chocolate like you lot. Saw some beautiful views and have really earned the large piece of cake I'm about to devour, along with re-hydrating (with tea, that is!)

I've always remembered sevenths because when I was very young I discovered that 1/7 is .142857142857142857… and all the other sevenths are the same sequence of repeated six digits but each starting from a different one. At the time I thought that was incredibly cool, and I've never forgotten it.

Sun lounger arrived....and ..chuffed that a pupil told me I was the only person who had 'explained what happened in Macbeth' so she was happy in the exam. Needless to say the above maths q scary.

I was having to help a colleague at work out with fractions this week (he had been helping primary school daughter) and instead of chocolate I find Pizza portions are a great help! Also being stupid helps a lot.....for example, if you try and add 1/2 and 1/3 it is hard.....but chop them both into sixths and it becomes easy! And if you just draw pizza slices it all becomes clear! Problem above, turn both into 42ths .....first one is 36/42 second one 35/42 so I vote the first option (but can I have pizza instead?) P.S Both portions of chocolate would be gone in a flash so perhaps doesn't really matter?

Oh and the 2/7 is just division....just add a decimal point and some zeros 2.000 divided by 7....7 into 2 is 0 remainder 2, put the 2 next to the next zero, .so 7 into 20 is 2 remainder 6, put remainder before next zero....so then 7 into 60 is 8 remainder 4, put remainder next to next zero.....7 into 40 is 5 remainder 5 etc etc etc So your answer is 0.285 ....just carry on as long as you need! You don't need to remember it!

have really earned the large piece of cake I'm about to devour, Ah, but what portion of the cake are you going to eat? 1/7 is .142857142857142857 I'm picturing you as a child Matthew.... chuffed that a pupil told me I was the only person who had 'explained what happened in Macbeth' so she was happy in the exam Now that I could have done! Seriously though Lynette, that's lovely. Yep. I know! Oh and the 2/7 is just division....just add a decimal point and some zeros 2.000 divided by 7....7 into 2 is 0 remainder 2, put the 2 next to the next zero, .so 7 into 20 is 2 remainder 6, put remainder before next zero....so then 7 into 60 is 8 remainder 4, put remainder next to next zero.....7 into 40 is 5 remainder 5 etc etc etc So your answer is 0.285 You win. That is completely awesome. Never seen it before.

I can see how 2/7 is division (I mean, that says two sevenths, but it also literally says two divided by seven) but if I didn't have a calculator or an amazing method like @thematthew's then I don't know that I'd've got anywhere without some REALLY roundabout maths. My techniques work, but they're also RIDICULOUSLY long-winded.
