Every day in the steel city is special, but today is extra special. The world-famous Crucible Theatre opened exactly 50 years ago. Happy birthday dear friend. And before anyone asks, no, I wasn't there. My earliest memories are of the legendary pantos with Marti Caine and Bobby Knutt. In the days of large employers with sports and social clubs, whole performances would be block booked. No parents, just children, or maybe I'm misremembering. I do remember our tickets came with a voucher that could be swapped for a bag of spice. My brothers and I had an afternoon at the theatre, plus a belly full of E numbers, for the grand total of 12p to get there and back on the bus. Happy days! Over to you, BurlyBeaR.

I’m afraid the crucible was planning it’s first refurb by the time I came along TallPaul. I’m much much younger than you 👶 By the way non-Sheffielders, when he says “spice” he means sweeties, not the infamous hallucinogenic street drug.

At 04:00 this morning there was a police car and a tow truck outside my house very quietly lifting someone's expensive-looking car from the street. Now I'm desperately curious about the story behind it. The fact that they were doing it in the small hours of the morning with hushed voices and with all the usual flashing lights switched off is intriguing.
(Of course the reason they were being so quiet is probably nothing more than because it was 04:00. But why that time?)

Probably to be sure they would find it parked outside the registered keepers house.

Hi A, Thank you for positing here. I am no expert, but you are amongst online friends and won’t be judged for reaching out, which is the first step you’ve taken. Do consider contacting the Samaritans www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/ Or, if you prefer text giveusashout.org/Finally, this charity is excellent too for ongoing support. www.listeningplace.org.uk/Of course, there is your GP too. My experience is that they will be able to help you also. Please do speak to someone who will be able to listen to you and they are trained so you can talk freely with them. I wish you well. S

I've just seen a story about how robot bartenders could replace human bar staff,
The CEO of one company manufacturing them claims that people talking to the bar staff is a cliche from the movies and doesn't happen in real life. That's not true of any place I've ever been; in fact, the friendliness of the staff is one of the make-or-break factors for me in whether I'll go back to somewhere. (To be fair, there may be a use for these robots in places such as airports where there's not really any such thing as a regular.) Partially contradicting himself, he also says that his robots will use AI to be able to engage punters in conversation. I'm guessing that he's new to the Internet, because the experience of the past couple of decades suggests that when people encounter a conversational AI they'll invariably attempt to turn it into as extreme a bigot as they can. I reckon it'll be swearing at customers within a couple of hours and advocating genocide in under a week.

I sometimes wonder if CEOs advocating robots for replacing humans in certain roles have ever seen Terminator or Westworld.

Got myself to London for a short break. Now enjoying a Kir Royale and dinner before Dear Evan Hansen. It's nice being by myself and people-watching!

OMG, @thematthew, I've laughed way too hard at that last sentence of your post, although it is sadly true. (The popular science articles on that never fail to amaze and shock me.)
I agree, though: a friendly face often makes up for bad coffee, and just about everything else. I hate the idea of buying coffee from an AI.

I'm getting a flu vaccination today. There's a huge belt of rain sweeping across the country. It's due to reach me just as I have to start walking to the doctor and it'll have passed just about the time I get home again.

I'm on a train to London (heaving & hardly anyone masked) & the nearer it gets the more threating the sky looks. Please let the rain hold off until I get to the ROH. I don't mind if I get soaked walking back to Kings Cross afterwards but I don't want to spend 2 hours of ballet feeling like I'm getting hypothermia & trench foot!

Looking at the rainfall radar it seems it'll be passing over London from around 11:00 to 11:45, and it seems to be getting lighter.
(Rainfall radar is cool.)

I got to London fine yesterday but the journey home was awful. Almost 4 hours for what should have taken 50 minutes, including an hour and a half standing in the cold at Stevenage & another half an hour or more standing in the cold at Royston. I was masked so my glasses were too fogged up for me to see properly most of the time. I ended up crammed in a taxi alongside 3 unmasked fellow passengers, by which point I was so cold I would have taken a taxi with the Devil himself, masked or unmasked. Aching all over today from all the standing & if I haven't caught covid it'll be a miracle!

Hoping everything works out ok in the end

A trip to the Marble Arch Mound this morning. It didn’t look as bad as I thought it would walking up to it. Despite the bad weather the view at the top isn’t bad. The most impressive part of the visit was the Light exhibition pieces by Anthony James. Walking back into Oxford Street and Regent St to have a quick look at the Christmas window displays of the big departmental stores which are always impressive. Though no trip to that neck of the city is complete without a browse around Hamleys just to have chance to a play with some of those toys. Yes I’m over 40 but a big kid at heart!

TallPaul - so true. I could of move in there to be honest. The Hornby model train stuff on display brought back so many memories.

Not saying the Tories are throwing money at the NHS but 350 office personal have now moved in down the road, into a former factory now office space. Those roles had been in random porta-cabins and whatnot around the Kings Hospital site for years. Now more staff, a proper place with canteen, central heating and meeting rooms.
Plus the GP surgery just called unexpectedly asking if I wanted (a) a health and wellbeing coach (b) a flu shot or (c) a Covid booster. Assuming a pre-Christmas push on the shots .. sadly, couldn't offer a writing coach. Still, very impressed.

Just back from hospital after having a procedure done under local anaesthetic. - They put a needle into my eye. Got to have it done again in a month & again in another month. Everything looks rather blurry right now.

I walked along Horseguards on the way home last night and the lights were on upstairs, at the back of No 11 Downing Street. Iirc, PM Johnson and his family took that flat because its bigger than No 10 and anyway Rishi is happier living the billionaire lifestyle elswhere.
It was curious to imagine Boris cleaning his teeth and scratching his nuts just out of view while I listened to Radiohead on bluetooth and pondered the existential merits of Julian Clary.

I had a friggin' awesome day!
I work for a Local Authority and today found out that I was successful in an interview that I had on Monday for an internal position.
Whilst it's not so much a promotion, it's different from the ole that I am currently performing and a sideways move into a similar role that I performed at another Local Authority.
Yay me!
