marob You weren't the person on the other end of the phone to a woman standing right in the entrance yelling into her mobile at someone who evidently couldn't find their way there for the 9pm performance were you?! No, that wasn’t me. The first time I got there early, so decided to walk around the park a bit, which was a mistake because it’s much bigger than I thought. Was maybe a quarter of the way around when I needed to head back but due to the lake I couldn’t just cut across in a straight line, then ended up on the road outside the theatre but couldn’t find the way in. Second time I headed back to where we went in for the first show, in darkness, to find it closed. But I wasn’t alone in that respect. I did see you there actually, I was about three or four rows behind you.

This time, as I was on my own, I stuck to the gardens near the theatre & the Inner Ring.
I'm sorry I didn't recognise you or I would have said hello (at a distance!). I imagine I was fairly conspicuous, being one of a small minority in face masks & doubtless the only person in gloves!

I'm not sure it ever really arrived this year, but summer is definitely over. ☹ The local comp. is back, and mince pies are in the shops.

My first long distance trip to see a musical since March 2020. Oklahoma! matinee today at Wakefield Theatre Royal. Rail travel from Kent in both directions. Journey up uneventful. Lovely theatre, wonderful production of one of my favourite musicals by a group of very talented young people.
Then the journey back to London.
Previous Cross Country train to Bristol arrived on time but seemed to be taking a long time to depart. I found out there were three or four ticketless passengers, all well-oiled, refusing to leave the train. Train manager insisting they must get off and he won't be leaving till they do. Police summoned. 35 minutes later they arrived - 7 of them. 5 minutes more and they were off the train and trying to complain to police and platform staff about the train manager's conduct. His train left.
My 18.29 London train therefore departed 40 minutes late. Signalling problem next, near a place called Fitzwilliam. Train had to proceed at caution through a red signal or two so almost an hour late leaving Doncaster. 20 minutes later we stopped again. This time a points problem we were told, it was being fixed but train not expected to move for about 15 minutes. The train manager was checking tickets and speaking to passengers in my carriage when there was a loud call for her. The person shouted something I didn't catch as well as her name, and hearing that she ran in the direction of the shout as did other staff including the driver(I saw his badge). It was very worrying - if it was a medical emergency the train was nowhere near a station with an ongoing points problem.
We were eventually told that a drunken passenger had operated the emergency button which released the doors and he had jumped off the train, across the line and could be seen near the tracks in the fields opposite ! Power had to be immediately switched off on both lines in case, we were told, he got back on the line to try to re-board the train in his inebriated state. Eventually we got going now 90 minutes late and lost another 10 minutes into London. Everyone was given a free cake and bottle of water and advised about delay repay.
There's no way of knowing whether we would have missed the subsequent problems if the train hadn't been delayed at Wakefield. The train manager was lovely, she handled things very well, sorting out subsequent connections, advising about taxis etc. I'll get my £12.20 fare back as will hundreds of other delayed passengers but not the best reintroduction to the joys of rail travel. Won't stop me making similar journeys, Bristol next time.

Oh FrontrowverPaul, that sounds like such a stressful trip/day! I don't even know what to say about people refusing to pay fares and getting so drunk that they are jumping off trains... I'm lost for words on those. But the important part is that you made it home safe (although, I'm assuming, exhausted) and that it takes more than this to put you off further train adventures. (Bristol will be worth it, I am sure!) I'm back in London (after a bit of a bonkers flight experience this past Friday, actually), and am currently feeling a little stuck between a bit of holiday blues, plus the stress of returning to work on Monday, and the need to jump right back into the London life that I love, including the theatre side of it. So I treated myself to a super-fancy Donmar Warehouse ticket for "Love and Other Acts of Violence" (because Tom Mothersdale!), for a start, and then followed that up randomly with a ticket for "Big Big Sky", because why not. I have this strange feeling that I've sort of lost the ability to think "analytically" about theatre the way I used to, with the long gap of not seeing any (followed up with seeing just monologues, which to me just isn't the same). Does anyone else on here feel the same way?

I remember an incident in London (though I wasn't personally involved) where a train was delayed and some passengers forced the doors open and got on to the track. It was in a third-rail area so the power had to be switched off, and it couldn't be switched on again until someone had walked the track to make sure everyone was accounted for. Several hours of delay to every train in the area.

This is becoming spooky, FrontrowverPaul. The two most recent occasions I've been delayed in West Yorkshire were at Wakefield, while we waited for drunk football supporters to be removed by the police, and at Fitzwilliam. In the case of the former, I too had been to the Theatre Royal. It's not so long ago that the line was blocked at Fitzwilliam by a farm tractor and trailer, so it could have been worse! I'm pleased you enjoyed Oklahoma! though. I would feel guilty if you hadn't.

FrontrowverPaul What a nightmare. One thing I have not missed with not being able to go to the theatre for most of the last 18 months is train delays!

Oh goodness, yes. I'm confused by it becasue it's also the case the quality of theatre in this period hasn't been great: is it me, is it what I've seen, have I lost the habit ...
Since the return, literally the only thing I've seen that's caused me to seriously engage has been Beckett's Happy Days. Maybe I've chosen badly ..

Thanks for all the comments. I only find such delays stressful if I'm on my way TO a show. On a train or coach back to London I'm not too bothered about delays but there were about 10 horrible minutes yesterdaywhen we thought there was a medical emergency or worse on a stuck train, then we were told it was just a drunk idiot. I always take loads of food and drink on my trips plus a book for a train journey or CD player for a coach trip. and I can get a train from Victoria back to Kent as late as 00.40.
Got home 23.45 instead of 22.15, ate dinner 00.15, went to bed 01.15, got up 05.00 to go to the local boot fair as we always do, but it's catching up with me now and I declined Rush tickets to see Anything Goes from stalls row D an hour ago. Afternoon map beckons but will try to stay awake for EPOS.

londonpostie, I'm relieved to hear that it's not just me! I don't think I've lost the habit (I hope not!), but I most certainly feel a little rusty... I am also sensing it's not just you who has been/is unhappy with the quality and - if I may add - attractiveness of the productions on offer. I haven't seen that many things since the pandemic measures have predominantly been lifted, but I've noticed that the reviews on the board have been lukewarm for a few of the plays, which is probably at least somewhat indicative (because people on here really love theatre). Also, I got an email from the Almeida the other day, advising me that I can get their "Islington first" discount on the entire run of "Once upon a time...", and I don't think that has ever happened before. It likely means that it is not selling well, and that they have somehow failed to anticipate what the returning theatregoers want to see. Despite all the talk about providing space for new and diverse talent during the pandemic, perhaps the audiences still want predominantly big and recognisable names and familiar stories? I'm hoping Tom Wells restores my faith in theatre, and myself as a theatregoer, a little tomorrow. :)

Took my 14 year old niece as a groundling to the Globe over the weekend. She isn't terribly chatty or liable to enthuse so not lots to go by afterwards as to how it had gone down, she said she'd go again which I took as very positive.
I spoke to her younger sister the day after and she informed me that the feedback she'd received had been, 'I was made to queue for three hours, aunty went off and sat on a bench with two men, I liked the drunk people'.

Per my previous comments about recent spider incursions, having read this article www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-49730011 I'm now wondering whether, having hoovered up lots of spiders in the last few weeks, rather then being cruel we're actually providing a dating service & there's a spider orgy going on inside the hoover bag!

I feel like my life has been freaking insane the last week and a half and I just need to get it down, so please bear with me!
So bank hol weekend I went to London to see Cinderella(great!) then LH in Joseph (she was ill we’ve been over this) and then the BH Monday to see Alexandra in Joseph. She was fab. So I did all that, then was straight back to Stoke Mon eve. Worked Tues, Weds, Thurs, Fri. Quite a busy stressful week, cried at my desk a coupla times which is unusual for me!
The major thing that happened last week was my dad went into hospital for an outpatient ekg and they admitted him straightaway and he’s still there now, waiting for a pacemaker! So that was a stressful few days waiting on test results to see what they were gonna do! He’s fine, but I had Linzi’s last Joseph matinee booked for Sat and I was tearing myself up over whether to go, cos I’d never have forgiven myself if something happened to him and I was messing about in London!
However on Friday evening got the nod he was going to be ok so on Friday night I went to see McFly at an outdoor concert that night straight from work then was up early on Sat for a very emotional Linzi’s last Joseph - it was incredible! Sunday I had to mow the lawns cos my dad is indisposed. I have never mowed a lawn before!! However quick lesson from my brother and I was off! It’s harder than it looks! Also I had to wear a mask cos of my hayfever!!
Today I’ve been off work cos I booked this week off to go to Dorset with my parents. We thought we might still go if dad had his pacemaker but he’s still waiting so we only had the news today we weren’t going to be able to go so been frantically trying to rearrange the accommodation for next month, call the bank about travel ins, call the boss about changing holidays, decide if I wanna go back into work this week as I’m not going away! (I don’t!) then I read that Boris is considering an October lockdown!! I don’t have any words for that that won’t get me banned from here!!
It’s been A LOT!! Thanks if you got to the end of all that!! Phew I feel a bit lighter now!!

Busy morning south of the river getting Punchdrunk with Hamlet. Very satisfying but broke again. Not the best day so far. My dad came out of hospital last night having had a pacemaker and this morning complained of feeling dizzy so I took his pulse and it was 172 so I had to 999 an ambulance out and he’s back in hospital!!! He should be fine, they need to adjust something and he should be right, but calling 999 for a family member is not an experience I wish to repeat. It was bloomin horrible! Bless the NHS though they’re amazing!

Eek Roxie glad he is getting sorted but that's scary. Thanks. It. Was. HORRIBLE. He kept passing out cos his heart was going too fast and it took all I had to remain calm and give the paramedics the info they needed and not burst into tears! Plus my mum was in a state (and I have never seen her in a state before) so yeah, tough one. He’s in the right place though and it doesn’t seem life threatening but it was so scary, watching your Dad being stretchered out of your living room into an ambulance. Just glad I was there cos no one else thought to take his pulse!!! I’m also thankful I have a doctor friend who calmed me down after. Hug your ones, folks!

Sounds like you did all the right things, good thinking on the pulse. Must have been terrifying but you clearly rose to the occasion. Hope he's back home safe and sound soon.
