I felt it was my duty to share this very important warning with you. This is just wrong!

My day couldn’t have been better yesterday as I walked into Stephen Tompkinson in Dublin. The most charming man.

Posted a letter this morning..to France. Queue for counters at Post Office as usual so took a deep breath and used the auto machines. Well, I’m literate ( you are my judge) and compos most of the time but I was reduced to helplessness. An Assistant flipped about, touched the screen, whoosh, whizz, bang bang. No idea what she did and there came a stamp. I managed to affix said stamp and as I said, I posted the letter.

Was in Liverpool this morning, when going for breakfast with my friend we ended up seeing half the wicked touring cast having their own breakfast in the same cafe. So that was fun, especially after I saw them smash it last night.

When it comes to self-service machines the ones that scare the crap out of me are the self-checkouts in supermarkets. I've never used one and hope I never will. I hear them solemnly intoning things like "Unexpected item in the bagging area" and it always seems to me there's an implied "...you gormless Tw*t" on the end of every statement. I'm not entirely sure what gorms are but I'm damned if I'm going to be accused of not having any by a mere machine.

I was in the branch of Sainsbury's near St Paul's. There was quite a queue, so the one and only sales assistant invited the next in line to use the self-checkout machine.
"I'm from America, we don't have those there," she replied in a very loud accent.
Anyway, as you were.

I've belonged to enough "commiserate about your terrible day at work" websites to know that they most certainly DO have self-checkout machines in the US.

Well maybe we should have a Theatreboard outing to my local Waitrose who have just installed the ultimate self service checkouts - I love them so much I want to marry them.
You put your shopping on a waist high counter (ok, maybe knee high to most of you lot) but, best of all, you can put down your handbag without the machine shouting at you about stupid unattended items etc. You can also re-arrange the shopping inside your half-packed carrier bag without a bored teenager having to amble over and grunt semi-syllables at you AND you don't have to request another carrier bag from the Plastic Police as they are right there and you scan them through the same as your shopping.
But the most fun is seeing how far away from the machine you can move and still get it to scan. It seems to spot the barcode even if half of it is crinkled or upside down or still in your fist. Whoever designed them should be employed by theatres to invent a machine that disables mobile phones outside bags/pockets at the theatre.

I worked in a school for half a day recently and they had signal blockers and we all had no signal. In hindsight it was funny since so many people at work waste time online during the day but it wasn't useful for those of us that actually do need internet! Maybe theatres and schools have to team up.

Ooh, as a Waitrose fan I'd love to know which branches have the updated version. Though I tend to use the self-service checkouts for minor shops when in London, and the staffed type when doing a bigger shop, as at my nearest branch today. I always need help with newspaper coupons if I do use the self-service type anyway, so if I anticipate more than one issue requiring human staff interaction, it makes sense to speed up the process slightly.

Well, I live (some of the time) in West Hollywood, a fairly up to date community in Los Angeles, and none of the supermarkets there have self-checkout machines. Literally none. It may have something to do with the fact that supermarket employees there are unionized. Or it may not.

It’s been a long week, but off out for drinks with friends that I’ve not seen for a while which is always nice.
I think everyone at work is counting down to the long weekend next week!

I worked in a school for half a day recently and they had signal blockers I thought those were illegal? If not, I'm starting a "Just Giving" page to buy one for every theatre in London. See I thought that too but no one had signal. We were in a London location where I can't imagine that there would have been no signal. It was very odd. Maybe I'll walk past there again one day and see if there's no signal. Oh, and I searched online and found nothing about the school and signal, very strange. Maybe it's just got very thick walls?

[quote author="@theatremonkey" I quite like the fact my local one's machines only take cards. It gives me a certain satisfaction to buy only a 49p Baking potato and pay for it with Amex. [/quote]

I’d quite like the machines to be programmed like Caroline Aherne’s checkout character from the fast show: Wholemeal bread. Trying to keep regular? Free range eggs. Just like ordinary eggs but with bits of sh*t on them.

Got accidentally caught up in the Pro EU march/parade/protest in Leeds on Saturday. The crowd (constantly baying "Exit from Brexit") was lead by a van carrying a grotesque statue of a monster with the heads of Theresa May, Boris, David Davis, and an MP I didn't recognise, with the words "Brexit is a Monstrosity" tattooed across its chest. It was well made but not for the faint of heart.

I passed a very nice temp job morning today quietly locked away in a room with some filing. They were very apologetic about it...I hadn't the heart to tell them being in a room by myself and not having to interact with other humans sounded like a PERFECT Monday morning to me.

Anyone else bother with the "Pointless: Grange Hill" special on Saturday? Yes, I did, for the exact same reason as you. My parents couldn't care less what I watched, but when I was at my grandparents, they expressly forbid me from watching Grange Hill, less there were any 'adult' themes they didn't want me exposed to. I wouldn't mind, but I was in my 20s at the time!

I heard there is a signal blocker close to the Angel, I hadn’t realised they were illegal. It’s in the Angel building, where Expedia and Cancer Research have offices. It can interfere with reception as far away as the tube station (much to my annoyance when I am sat in the 38 and it crawls through this area.)

Is there a better feeling than chilling on the train (catching up on the Archers) on an indulgent midweek matinee at the RSC.
