Quote from myself from yesterday on the book thread: Popped into Waterstones and decided to treat myself to a guilty pleasure - the third in the Jojo Moyes, Me Before You series entitled Still Me.

Just got in from work and guess what's waiting for me from Amazon? Ooopsie diddly doo. 😳 *Note to self - write more notes to self.... Ah, the curse of the pre-order! Nearly as bad as booking theatre tickets 18 months in advance then forgetting you booked then and letting someone book you some more. Ahem.

Well, I've had some stupid (and weird) advice in my time relating to careers. But today someone (in all seriousness) suggested I 'rethink' the London move even though I 'can't afford it' because people 'really hungry for success are sleeping on the streets there'.
Only a journalist for a certain tabloid would confuse homelessness with a career move (I say that in judgement of her, with no flippancy for homelessness obviously)

Currently on my 15th straight hour in work with little likelihood of making it home to bed before about 3am. I'm tired.

I managed to order 2 copies of the same book from Amazon the other day! Though a bonus when I tried to return it they said 'we'll refund you keep the book' (I guess for very cheap orders it costs them more to get it back or something) so now I have a spare book to re-gift at some point haha.

Not sure where to put this post, but the Telegraph featured on its front page a beautiful photo of two cloned monkeys. They looked so charming that I have no doubt they are related to the TheatreMonkey and I feel that congratulations should be passed on to him on this delightful occasion.
So, three cheers for our very own monkey and all his close relatives! Hip, hip....etc.

Big Paul Young fan here. Really sorry to hear that his wife, Stacey, has passed away from brain cancer today at a ridiculously young age.

Received a letter this morning telling me that my home insurance had been cancelled for non-payment. That was a bit of a surprise to me, as I'd paid four weeks ago and have a bank statement showing the money has been taken from my account. It appears that somehow the person who originally took my card details managed to credit the payment to the wrong policy.
I'm surprised that's even possible, because when I paid they checked my name, address and date of birth to confirm it was the right account. From what I was told today it seems they have separate systems for finance and insurance, but I'd have thought there'd be some sort of cross-checking so the operator can make sure they've entered the correct account for payment.

Though lynette, haven't you said you prefer to ring rather than booking online? In which case I see why you might wish to establish your innocence at an early opportunity.

What's going on with the weather? It feels weird to drive with the windows open in January. After tomorrow it's back to more seasonally appropriate weather, there's also a decent chance of something even more wintry, looking ahead to February. (as for here further up North, it's been pretty horrible, strong winds and sheeting rain, for a few days).

Just spent the morning booking for a 3 day break in Dubrovnik. Since this is with my father (age 89) I was very careful to find an appropriate hotel. He is physically excellent for his age and can still do short countryside walks and negotiate steps, if there are not too many. Anyway, after much deliberation I found what sounded like a superb boutique hotel (how I hate that smug phrase) with ecstatic trip advisor reviews. I went ahead and booked online and, for the first time ever, took the 'no cancellation' option. I'd spent ages reading up about said hotel to check it was OK but then about 5 minutes after committing myself I read there are 60 exterior steps to access the hotel! This is not made clear at all on the website. My father would cope with around 15 steps but not 60.
I emailed the booking agency immediately and complained and they are promising me a full refund, although annoyingly that will take 7 to 14 days!
Does anyone else find booking holidays over the net really stressful?

Does anyone else find booking holidays over the net really stressful? Ugh that is frustrating! hoping they come through quickly with that refund! I find it stressful in that I am incredibly indecisive when it comes to holiday booking etc, more through a worry of 'is this the right hotel/dates/flights' etc. Also given that my stupid dyslexic brain has a habit of accidentally causing me to think I've booked the right date/place/time/whatever when in fact there's an error I can't 'see' causes me a great deal of stress/worry. Also the raging hordes of Tripadvisor don't help sometimes...!

Just booked a trip to Wicked with around 7 hours to spare, which if that wasnt stressful enough I live 200 miles away and I'm still not in London.
EDIT at 18:19: I came on the chance that Samantha Thomas was playing Glinda after Sophie is in Wales and standby on holiday and thank goodness I was correct.

I was wondering where you'd got to @theatremonkey . PS. What fans?

I had a similar problem with my laptop a while back. The combination of dust in the CPU fan and the tiny clearance between the air intake and the desk meant it overheated. It turns out that there are two levels of overheating. When it reaches the first it turns all the fans to maximum and slows down the CPU to try to cool down. If that doesn't do the trick and the temperature keeps rising then the last resort is to send a signal to the power supply to say "cut all power to the motherboard immediately and keep it off until the electrical supply has been physically switched off and on again". I hit the second one. Instant silence.
So now I keep the laptop propped up on little rubber feet and use a straw to blow the dust out every few weeks.
