In my opinion, the performer that by the end of the run has done the most performances should be the one that is eligible. Then I believe that will be Natasha as she has already performed sixty, I think I just read.

I've seen both Sheridan and Natasha play Fanny and it's difficult to say who the best is. It fits the "understudy gets thrown on with no notice and blows away critics and theatregoers alike" narrative for Natasha to be much stronger than Sheridan but in reality I don't think there's a lot between them. Sheridan is funny, and has the presence. Natasha has the pipes and gives a much more... warm portrayal.

I believe Martine McCutcheons understudies performed more than she did.. And she went on to win the Olivier!

The production has really shot Natasha in the foot with this one. As she is still listed as Understudy to Sheridan, it has really hindered her chance at any nomination. If she was listed as a replacement it would be a different consideration as the role is then hers but the production still consider her Understudy.

My prior comment, I understand that awards are not anything and Natasha is getting the chance of a lifetime and living her dream 8 times a week so please don't think me ignorant. I am merely talking about the way the producers etc may of handled the Natasha situation. I'm sure Natasha doesn't care.

The Olivier Awards are for excellence in performance, not for reliability of attendance.

I think if an actor has prior filming commitments it should be listed on the website so people booking are aware & the theatre is covered, I'm surprised they didn't do that with Kevin Spacey when he was absent from The Philadelphia story unless they just didn't bother providing that kind of info then? I know they have with Kunal Nayyar in The Spoils when I assume he's going back to the US to film Big Bang.
Sickness, on the other hand, can't be helped & is unpredictable.
I think I've been really lucky & the only "star" to be absent from a show I've booked was Nathan Lane in The Producers but I think that was towards the end of the run when it all started to fall apart!

Yes but the character was never about singing or being the best at it. It was her quirkiness and humour. That is where Sheridan has the edge (and why wouldn't she. This has been her job for years!) In a recording, you don't get the character, in a recording the voice is the most important thing. You don't buy a recording for facial expressions Definately think you need the character to come out in a cast recording. Otherwise you can do what some do and ditch the actors and get in "famous" singers to do it instead.

That was the year Trevor Nunn was up for an Outstanding Achievement award, and by a strange coincidence every show he was involved with seemed to do remarkably well. Funny how that happened.

There was a piano-only bonus track of Memphis Lives in Me for an understudy on the Memphis OLC. Something similar could, and should, be done here, maybe with Don't Rain On My Parade or People. It was the composer, not an understudy. And there was not understudy but alternate in Memphis, btw

The Olivier Awards are for excellence in performance, not for reliability of attendance. Of course, but I don't think Natasha's performance can be put in that bracket. She is exceptional, by any standard.

You want the character in the voice, but you also want a voice that is pleasing to the ear. I do believe the recording would be amazing from Natasha as she has a voice which is a joy to listen to and she characterises it throughout, excellently.
