I actually, really, genuinely want to know what the alternative explanation could possibly be that would seem more believable than a mental health crisis. Well the poster seemed to sum up what a number here have implied, to get 'attention' or 'for dramatic effect' and that it is merely 'self diagnosis'. Couple this with posts claiming that performers are in some way the public's property and that they seek this sort of attention and you get a sense of the mindset of these people. It isn't pretty.

In The Sun today, it said that Funny Girl producers were hoping she'd be back by the weekend as that's when she was due back. However, apparently that looks quite bleak now

Ferne McCann has been having some singing lessons from a well known vocal coach - perhaps she's hoping to step into the role after successful debut at Union Theatre.

The woman from Towie?
Yes, theatre goers would be overjoyed with that one....
Especially when paying over a hundred quid.
Even if she became a great singer (ha) there's also something called acting which is usually quite important too (no, shouting "shut up" on cue on reality tv does not count as acting).

It's head-scratchingly baffling. Why would anyone try to 'get attention' by going into a complete retreat out of the public eye rather than by performing in front of an audience 8 times a week?

"Her time off was meant to refresh her batteries and get her head straight. But clearly it's not worked and bosses feel she's not ready to return"
Says who I wonder?
An "unnamed source"?
A "close friend"?
Basically you can write anything in a paper these days and call it news and fact.

Unnamed source, they could be reading this thread and say people on here are the 'close source'...ohh the papers!!

Couple this with posts claiming that performers are in some way the public's property and that they seek this sort of attention and you get a sense of the mindset of these people. It isn't pretty. Attention (ADHD) is a mental health issue too and don't tell me any actors that loves attention, they love the adulation of being told how great their performance was and they were robbed of the Olivier or Tony, that is there raisin d'être and what drives a lot of actors, but attention doesn't force you to miss work for over a month and some more. There isn't pictures of her falling out of wine bars, she is still a highly valuable commodity for the paparazzi at the moment, so being ill is very restrictive what she can do and where she can go, even going out with a friend for lunch and having a bottle of wine can be very misconstrued. From the little I know of Sonia Friedman, from what I read and heard on the radio - she has always came across as a caring and genuine person and I wouldn't say she would be worried because the show is losing their star and the the effect it has on the box office, this would be secondary I would say she is more worried that her star has been taken ill and concerned about Sheridans well being and her recovery. We still need empathy for mental health issues, because we cannot stick a plaster on the brain, doesn't mean, it is less debilitating than a physical injury. As I said earlier on this thread 1 in 4 of us will suffer mental health issues, some worse than others. i hope Sheridan a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her on stage again, once she is cured.

The producers of Funny Girl - Sonia Friedman, David Babani and Scott Landis - have released the following statement:
"It is, and always has been, Sheridan’s and the producers’ intention that she will return to Funny Girl, and any speculation to the contrary is entirely inaccurate and unhelpful. Sheridan’s recovery from stress and exhaustion is the absolute priority. She is doing really well and is incredibly keen to return as soon as possible.
"Following medical advice, her return to the production will be slightly later than originally anticipated - no later than week commencing 11th July. Natasha J Barnes, who has played Fanny Brice in recent weeks to great critical and public acclaim, will continue in the role until Sheridan's return."

How gracious of her to come back after having missed 2 months in a six months run.

Sad that mental health in whatever form it takes is not taken as seriously as physical illness.

I feel sorry for Natasha, it must be a real shame for her to have all this time playing the role and then as soon as Sheridan comes back it'll be "Sorry, SHE'S back now, so we don't need you." I understand that Natasha knew it would only be a few weeks, but it must be a little annoying.

Yes, but she's had a chance she'd never have dreamed of and she'll surely stand out more now for future roles. I don't think she'll mind.

I wouldn't worry too much about Natasha. She's a professional and knows that her duties were to be an occasional understudy and eventually a stand-in. In fact, this opportunity could have been the best thing to happen to her career, and it'll definitely give her a boost whether Sheridan comes back or not.
Personally, I think the producers should change the arrangement slightly and have Natasha upgraded to standby and perhaps get two scheduled performances each week. Clearly this has burned out Sheridan, and I think giving her two days off would be a bit more sustainable until October.
