Has anyone been tempted to go to the bar in the theatre and ask for "a glass of technical difficulties"? I was so tempted last night, but I bottled out.

Sorry to rain on your parade George but you don't seem to have got the message no matter how many times people tell you. How about if I explain things in French? Elle ne reviendra pas. Spanish? Que no va a volver. German? Sie kommt nicht zurück. Swahili? Yeye si kurudi tena. In the form of a Monty Python sketch? 'No no she's not gone, she's, she's restin'! Remarkable bird, Miss Technical Difficulties, idn'it, ay? Beautiful Fanny!' Peut-etre le douzieme de jamais, monsieur?

This thread alone is enough to drive us all to technical difficulties...

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some bars selling a 'Technical Difficulties' in Soho.

What if you paid £60 or even a season ticket, which can cost over £10000, to see your favourite football player and he ruptures a knee ligament - this sides him for over a year and fans have paid good money to see their favourite player, no different here, it seems a lot of people don't see this as a injury and have a very poor grasp of mental health issues and how long it can actually take to recover, sometimes it can be weeks, sometimes months, can be even years and very sadly for some, never - they tormented for the rest of their lives.
My message is still the same, I hope Sheridan makes a speedy recovery and hope she will be back on stage, but in her own time, when she is cured.
However I feel we are only on the second chapter and there is a lot more of the story to come out.

Mental health issues are not discussed nearly enough in society so I do think that's where we don't or can't fully comprehend the complexity and impact of mental health issues on an individual unless we've suffered from some form of it personally or know someone who does. I too can only wish Sheridan a quick recovery and hope she is getting the support and help that she needs. I'm sure, when she is ready, she will return to the stage or screen and can only hope that when she does the public can show her support and not continue to dredge up these current issues and demoralise.

I saw it yesterday afternoon and whilst i am a great fan of Sheridan Smith I thought that Natasha J Barnes was absolutely brilliant as were the rest of the cast.

I know several close family members who have suffered mental illness and have had issues myself but i have not seen or heard nothing that confirms that is what sheridan is going through. Maybe she is, maybe she isnt, at the end of the day none of us know one way or another. but considering the drama that tends to surround her even before her fathers diagnosis im a bit sceptical thats the case here. But as i say, none of us will know one way or another.
After dropping out of bridget jones (granted that show was in development hell) and now this im not sure how quick sonia friedman will be to hire her again
Unfortunately i have also seen people use it as a reason for attention and dramatic effect. Its great there is more awareness of mental illness but unfortunately also comes with increased self diagnosis.

Saw the matinee on the 8th and loved the show. I thought Natasha J Barnes did a sterling job of bringing Fanny to life. Would have loved to have seen Sheridan, but no reason to not see the show because of a cover. The theatre looked full and a full standing ovation at the end for her and the cast. Lets hope Sheridan gets back to full strength in another show to give her talents an airing. Interesting to see how Natasha goes on and what shows she may pick next.

I agree 100% with BurlyBeaR. If the producers have been notified that Sheridan is not coming back at all/ not coming back till July they should make a public announcement. If Sheridan is not coming back Natasha is not currently filling the role of an understudy; she is a replacement. Continuing to promote the show with Sheridan's name and/ or face is false advertizing if they are fully aware she will not perform. On the subject of being a fitting replacement, I think the romantic idea that an understudy has stepped in at the last minute will become old-hat quite quickly and the show will merely become an adequate revival rather than a must-see star turn. Natasha is better than that. All sorts of shows charge more currently - some with casts no one has heard of, or have much less talent. No one can say when anyone can come back - even less so when someone elses illness is involved. If it takes 4 weeks it takes 4 weeks , if it takes a year it takes a year. The impossible cure, doesn't arrive, or the problem find a solution, because the name of the month changes. My experience is that sick parents don't become better or worse predictably, false alarms happen, and if your own body reacts badly to that , you end up with odd systems going haywire , weeks, months and years later.

What on earth do you think happened?! That she just randomly decided - after several years of being an incredibly reliable performer who hates to take time off and was considered by most a true professional and a workaholic - that she didn't want to perform any more? That she decided to take time off the show in a blaze of negative publicity that has tarnished her reputation for fun, or because she just couldn't be bothered any more? Do you honestly really think she is enjoying this situation?

I actually, really, genuinely want to know what the alternative explanation could possibly be that would seem more believable than a mental health crisis.
