Do you really think grown adults cannot tell when someone is drunk? Also the difference between a performance and being drunk? [ There's ample evidence that it's not always possible to tell that someone is drunk, even when you're up close to them. This is why breathalysers exist. It's even less possible from a seat in the stalls of the Savoy when the person in question is on stage and in character. Also as a teetotaller I've had people think I was drunk when I was just a bit over-tired and giddy. I've seen Sheridan in Funny Girl and I can see how her performance in the first 15 minutes could be misinterpreted. I've also no reason to think that the producers would cover for her at their own expense, given that she had a rather public falling out with them. Simply, the idea of cancelling an in-progress show instead of sending an understudy on is so extraordinary that it would take much more comprehensive evidence than this to convince me of it.

Because if they had sent on the understudy they would have had to answer questions about Sher's 'indisposition' so pulling a techie was the easiest way to get her off with a decent and ready made excuse in hand. Little did the producers know that this lot would kick off. If it hadn't been for those meddling tweeters they'd have got away with it. luv 'n hugs Jessica Fletcher x

So has she always acted drunk in that opening scene? I wouldn't say it is the opening scene. The confusion may of come from Greatest Star where she dances and sings eccentrically anyway, and pulls crazy faces which some may misinterpret, and I can understand that etc... and then the Cornet Song, where she dances and flirts with the dancers, touches their bums and groins etc, can definitely be misinterpreted if you have been completely lost from the scene before and what she is trying to get across with the performance. I personally found it hilarious and can see the direction she was going into, even if my explanation isn't the best. I can also see, however, why audiences may be confused. So you're saying people may have been confused by the acting she is directed to do in the first few numbers? It seems a bit bad then that, if "technical issues" really cancelled the show, and so many of the audience thought it was because she was drunk that it should get into the papers.... why haven't the producers or director of the show spoken up to say "Actually it's directed like that"? It also seems terrible luck that there were already rumours about her at the Menier for exactly the same issues! From everything I've heard about Sheridan she seems to be the sort of person who'd actually come out to the fans and say "We're sorry that the travelator has broken, we really want to carry on, but we just can't". I'd even expect her to try to carry on with a semi-staged production as Les Mis does when the revolve breaks. I wonder why Sheridan didn't come out and say something, either on stage, or at stage door?

I'm not a fan of Sheridan in this but I wonder whether it's because she spends the first section of the show speaking in that dreadful silly baby girl voice that made people think she was on something? Her accent also wavered a lot when I saw it at the Menier but I just put it down to her not being able to maintain it. Like people who try a Welsh accent and end up sounding like they're from the Punjab. Although, having said that, don't a lot of New York people sound a little bit Irish because of the large Irish immigrant population?
Anyhoo, I can't imagine she was drunk. And I am unanimous in that.

The producers or front of house would never disclose that, ever. Especially to an audience member just coming out. But the reasons for the producers not revealing it is because t puts them in a bad light for hiring an actress who turns up drunk, it can harm ticket sales, people won't want to buy a ticket to a show and half expect it to not go on.

Smith's Barbra Streisand impression was awful! Her Fanny Brice impression however was brilliant.
Those unfamiliar with Brice and the way in which Smith chose to play the role may very easily interpret her performance as 'drunk' because they are used to the bambi on ice yet somehow still poised way in which Streisand played Fanny in the film.
I'm not going to bother chipping in on this discussion any further, because I don't have any inside knowledge, and don't really trust that the papers aren't just reporting the skewed views of disgruntled audience members who don't know how the role is ordinarily played. If this becomes an ongoing issue and audience member / fellow company members are continually let down then yes, I think we can assume there is a problem, but at the moment we don't have any real 'evidence', just hearsay, and I'm personally not going to start drawing conclusions based off of just that.
As for Sheridan Smith not coming out between shows, there could be many reasons. Work? Resting her voice and doesn't want to be out in the cold too much? Or maybe she just doesn't want to. She's perfectly entitled to stay inside the theatre and not meet fans. Stagedooring isn't part of her job, or anyone elses.
I will say however that I thought she was fabulous when I saw her at the Menier, and I hope that if there is an issue it is sorted out quickly and compassionately.

I wonder why she doesn't come out in between shows ? Because she's met some of those crazy Sheridan Smith fans before? I mean, come on, would you?

I wonder why she doesn't come out in between shows ? She occasionally does, but I think it's due to it being a long show, matinee doesn't come down till around 5:15-5:20, by the time she's changed and out 5:30. Some days the crowd is so big she could easily be there 45mins-1hr, that would then only give her an hour to eat and prepare to go back on stage. It's not really long when you think about it. Also as she's on stage for 95% of the show I'd assumed she'd like a nice rest and sit down

Press sells, good or bad, for the amount of people who want to go and see her give the performance of her life, there's an equal amount of people who would love to go and watch her fail!
And as for front of house, I don't think they are all as sweet and innocent as their helpful smiles may appear. Let's not forget that many are out of work actors, so they may not want to be covering up for someone who is lucky enough to have a role in a show and not fully appreciate what they have. I have been informed of stuff I probably shouldn't have been by front of house before!

The worst (and most inaccurate) spreaders of gossip masquerading as truth are 'theatre insiders', 'I heard' becomes 'truth' before you know it. Many a person will have been affected by what 'so and so' said. I suppose it's the same in any high pressured business thiough.
As a rule of thumb, whenever you read 'theatre insider' attached to some gossip, imagine the words 'bitter unemployed/underemployed has been/never has been who exaggerates a lot'.
Never found much of that among students, probably as their idealism hasn't been put through the wringer yet.

In the midst of the recent sh*tstorm, news on the cast recording has gone quiet. How long do they tend to be released from the time they are recorded?

I am so excited for this Cast Recording. They have definitely done all of the Ensemble recording based on the Instagram photos. Unknown regarding the main cast.

Same here. I love the Broadway recording, but there's always something more special when it's the cast you've seen perform, plus the introduction of the song 'Funny Girl' at the end is going to be a highlight for me.

I heard' becomes 'truth' before you know it. This is doubly true when the Internet is involved. I have actually been present at a stage door incident that became the subject of Internet fan gossip, and when the final, sensationalised version was repeated to me for confirmation it was so far removed from reality I had no idea what they were on about. Said incident was such an inconsequential non-event that I hadn't even noticed it happening at the time, and I'm sure neither had its 'victim', but was described back to me as a full-on assault requiring swift security guard intervention.

Sidenote, sorry to deflect from all of the comments about Sheridan's personal life... but I am just re-watching The C Word and what an incredible performance! I really hope Sheridan wins for it this week at the BAFTA's!

I am genuinely surprised people are buying the 'technical difficulties ' statement. I guess this proves Sheridan's power on her fans. It just doesn't make sense. They could stop the rumours by just stating what the difficulty was, and they could threaten legal action if there was no grounding of truth in the reports.
Plus there are too many statements coming from different sources (some maybe more reliable than others) plus the fact these reports happened before at the menier, for there not to be some truth to it.
I did see comments on another forum about maybe she wasn't drunk, but instead maybe had some sort of breakdown. It's no secret that sheridan suffers from stage fright and anxiety. This would also link to reports of her not wanting the understudy to go on

I did see comments on another forum about maybe she wasn't drunk, but instead maybe had some sort of breakdown. If it was something like that then it's understandable that they wouldn't want to disclose the details, but it's a shame that the automatic go-to non-explanation whenever something goes wrong is "let's blame the crew". If a performer genuinely can't make it through the show then I'd be fine with a "personal reasons" explanation with no more detail than that. I'm not entitled to more detail than that: they are, after all, personal reasons. But as someone whose only theatre experience has been backstage I resent the idea that the invisibles can be a dumping ground for all a production's issues. (I'm not saying that's what happened in this case, but "technical reasons" is so frequently used an excuse it's impossible to take it seriously even if you see the set collapse before your eyes.)

I think we'll find that "technical reasons" is the only way a producer can make a claim on their insurance!

This must be where the airline industry got the idea from. Forty-five minutes after the time you were due to depart, you're stood at the gate with your Boots meal deal and "the flight is cancelled for technical reasons".

Does anyone know if Sheridan Smith has any confirmed holiday dates for this show please? No holiday dates, she is scheduled to be on at every performance bar illness or emergencies (like the Meiner with her father etc...)
