So has she always acted drunk in that opening scene? I wouldn't say it is the opening scene. The confusion may of come from Greatest Star where she dances and sings eccentrically anyway, and pulls crazy faces which some may misinterpret, and I can understand that etc... and then the Cornet Song, where she dances and flirts with the dancers, touches their bums and groins etc, can definitely be misinterpreted if you have been completely lost from the scene before and what she is trying to get across with the performance. I personally found it hilarious and can see the direction she was going into, even if my explanation isn't the best. I can also see, however, why audiences may be confused.

I'm sorry but audiences aren't stupid, they can tell if someone on stage is drunk. I have seen the show many times and never interpreted her performance as anything other than highly skilled. This subject is getting rather boring now though.

I saw the show last night.
Now, as a Yank, I know next to nothing about Sheridan's performance history, reputation, tabloid encounters, etc., etc. But what I do know is that I saw her give an amazing performance last night. From the second she appeared, she owned that stage and held the audience in the palm of her hand. And she did it by BEING Fanny Brice and not as "Sheridan Smith playing Fanny", if you get what I mean.
So what if her voice doesn't swoop and swirl like Streisand's? She sounded very strong -- and she acted the hell out of the part. I didn't think it was possible to get chills from hearing "People" for the 1000th time, but Sheridan gave them to me.
I thought the whole cast was strong, and was particularly impressed with Darius. He matches Sheridan scene-for-scene, and I completely bought the dynamics & chemistry between them. (I only wish he had more songs, as his voice was terrific.)
I went 'round to the stage door after, where at least one *reporter* was in wait. (I heard him interviewing people as he scribbled on his note pad: "How do you think Sheridan did tonight? Are you aware of the problems from the other night?" etc.) Darius and Sheridan came out within a few minutes of each other, and were both absolutely delightful with the fans. I even got a hug from Sheridan -- which she initiated.
Altogether a wonderful evening.

Surely Sheridan can sue here? Or at least her management should be sending out cease and desist letters at the very least.

I'm sorry but audiences aren't stupid, they can tell if someone on stage is drunk. No they can't. Theatre relies on that fact! Even if they've seen the show before they don't actually know if what they're seeing on stage is a performance choice that the actor snaps out of backstage. There are numerous stories of acting greats who were drunk half the time while performing, with audiences unaware of a problem.

Reporting the opinions of other people who were there on the night? From what I've seen its all "Sheridan appeared to be slurring....." And "one theatregoer said...." . All complete heresay and no definitive statements of fact.

To me there is a huge difference between this and slurring, stumbling and the whole appearance of being drunk instead of this. I think people know the difference to be fair to the. The fact she was forgetting lines and slurring, I don't think that's part of it, is it? Does she slur usually? I don't think that's part of the show at all. People know when people are drunk. For me, I don't take the audience as fools who cannot understand a performance. I'm glad to see she is pulling up though and by all reports the shows since have been amazing, which is all we can hope for.

Going to try and get day seats for this show tomorrow. Has anyone tried day-seating for this show before? If so, what time should I get there for?

I saw the show last night, I have seen it before aswell. I also read the Daily Fail article whilst in the dayseat queue. The fact the article says she walked on for Cornet Man leads me to believe the trav's were not working, probably leading to why the show was cancelled. I can't honestly believe she'd have been able to do the Cornet Man Choreo had those stupid articles been true. Her performance was, as it always has been, beautiful and faultless. The scum, sorry I mean journalists, at stage door were overheard to be basically feeding lines to the public 'she was reportedly drunk on Thursday, would you say she performed that way tonight' being one of the overheard quotes. I'm guessing they didn't get any good gossip since this morning story has no new "sources" to speak of. I feel many parts of yesterday's article to be laughable and have a lot of views on them, but as I don't want to be used as a "theatre source" and quoted, I will keep these off the internet.

The fact she was forgetting lines and slurring, I don't think that's part of it, is it? Does she slur usually? I don't think that's part of the show at all. Is it a fact, though? Because the people who thought so hadn't seen the show before, and the front of house who see it every night said it was as per usual. The accent she uses could be interpreted as slurred, if you don't know that's how it's meant to sound. People do occasionally forget lines without being drunk - and occasionally appear to have, when they haven't. Just like people sometimes appear to corpse when it's actually part of the show, or to be spontaneously interacting with an audience member who turns out to be a plant. The vast majority of the audience can't tell when those things are faked - Sheridan is performing Fanny performing a comic act for most of the first half, there's a fair bit of comic business involved. When I saw it my mum thought walking into the wall was a genuine accident! Confirmation bias appears to be at work here - the press are taking advantage of it at stage door by priming people with 'reportedly she was drunk' before asking for their impressions.

The level of denial in this thread is staggering. She had the same problem at the Menier, which I discussed in detail after the first reports of the recent incident came in, but our mods in their wisdom decided to delete that, which may have been for the best given the tabloids sniffing around.
But she needs profession help, and acting like it hasn't happened (on more than one occasion...) is certainly not the way to get it. I hope that the producers have had the balls (and the humanity) to place their star name on a final warning: she either stays sober and gets help, or turns up unfit for work and has her contract terminated.

Do you really think grown adults cannot tell when someone is drunk? Also the difference between a performance and being drunk? Are you really going to believe front of house would say anything different? That they would say, 'yes she was bad wasn't she? She's had a bit to drink tonight'? Of course they can sometimes forget lines, of course things can go wrong, of course a performer may not be on point, however when it all happens, then all of a sudden the show stops and that's it, all go home for the night, it just seems to be what people thought happened, did happen.

The tickets have the same no refunds given clause as any other, ticket holders wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Though the refunds last time do beg the question, was she really ill, or was she unfit to work for other reasons and the producers felt it would be unfair to punish the audience for an actor's failings?

They do. If an expectation is given via the press or twitter it can overrule a clause. Also a press campaign for refunds wouldn't be too shocking.

They didn't give refunds based on her being ill, you clearly haven't followed the whole thing properly.

We would make a terrible panel on a Jury.
It shouldn't be that a show thread is dominated by an old story, which has had no new offerings since Friday. If she wasn't, then the press have done exactly what they do best. Throw people in the gutter in order to get more readers. If she was, then she was. She continues to go out on stage night after night trying to recompense for a mistake, and if Friday's performance was anything to go by, she is doing so remarkably.
Now that's settled, how high is the stage?

Now that's settled, how high is the stage? It is pretty high, you can't see feet from the front row very well, it's about as high as Legally Blonde for anyone that saw it at the Savoy. The centre front row seat BB8 can sometimes be obstructed if, like last night, you have a tall enthusiastic conductor bopping around in front of you lol! But for £15 you really can't complain on what you get. Sheridan also interacts a lot with the first few rows, which if you like that kind of thing, as I do, is a very nice touch to the show.
