I wonder if they'll move that into a west end venue as it seems like a moneyspinner Somebody suggested the Bridge Theatre... That feels like a very odd move for a theatre built to commission new work. Much more likely for it to go into one of the receiving houses, or at worst one of the new spaces out of town (Wembley, etc).

And Nick Hytner directed his own adaptation of A Christmas Carol at the Bridge in 2020.

Not nice places to see shows imo. But yes, it would make more sense. The Old Vic are likely making some changes to ensure they sell some tickets though and bringing back a musical of such a well known film seems wise just now.

They plan on mounting the Broadway version of Carol at a theatre outside London for an Xmas season.
It’s played for years at the old vic now- time for it to play somewhere else.

Excited & looking forward to it's return. But, given it's luck on Broadway, having a run in December feels a bold choice and a little risky, given how this winter has panned out. Hopefully we'll be another step closer with Covid an all but who knows whats round the corner. Minchin hasn't had the best of luck in recent years. They best have a good, strong and numerous understudy & swing line-up to weather any potential rounds of isolations.

Interestingly I've heard GD is not back for a while yet (certainly not this Christmas)

I’ve often thought that ‘A Lent Carol’ sounded better anyway, especially if it helps with scheduling. It’d be great if they could move Christmas too as it’s a real stretch moneywise; all 3 of my kids are either Nov or Jan birthdays. Very inconsiderate.

The OV production of A Christmas Carol will outlive us all. It makes them a ridiculous amount of money every year without fail, and it's a great production so I get why they keep doing it!

Just thought I’d say… Happy Groundhog Day! ☺️ Also found this post on Instagram which I hadn’t seen before of Tim Minchin’s lovely pre-show speech for the final preview on Broadway when Andrew Call had to go on as Phil Connors after Andy Karl was injured. www.instagram.com/tv/CZes80uIChF/I can’t wait for this brilliant show to come back…

A couple of small updates from Tim. In a Facebook post yesterday remembering winning Best New Musical at the Oliviers 5 years ago:
“Groundhog Day will be back next year, mark my fkn words. xxx”
Also in a post about his turn in Jesus Christ Superstar:
“And I'm in it, playing the only musical theatre role I've ever really wanted to play*.
*I’Il do phil connors one day😈”
Can’t say I can see Tim in the role, but to be honest I’m so desperate for this show to come back I’d take pretty much anyone in the lead at this point.
Maybe we need to change the thread title seeing as it looks like it’s definitely not happening this year?

I dearly hope I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like he may have reached the point where saying it's coming back next year is just a bitterly ironic running joke.

It’s starting to all feel very repetitive, as if we’re living the same moments over and over again…

I would like to get excited as well but we have heard 'its coming back' several times in the last few years in interviews with Tim Minchin.
Don't get me wrong, I really want this to happen. But until they announce a theatre and a cast I will reserve my excitement.

Fair enough. I did also hear it from the mouth of Chris Nightingale earlier in the year so 🤞
I would so love to direct it!
