Groundhog Day to return to the Old Vic (and beyond). Dates not confirmed, but it will return. Confirmed by Matthew Warchus on Old Vic call just now.

That's good that it flopping on Braodawy hasn't consigned it to everlasting oblivion. As long as it doesn't return until after I've been vaccinated then I'll go & see it again. Although for the last year I feel like I've been living a Groundhog Day anyway!

The Zoom ended with Tim Minchin singing "There Will Be Sun". Quite moving really.

I love this show SO much...almost immediately I decided it sits in my top favourite musicals and 5 years on that hasn't changed! What call was this? Was it recorded?

It was a Zoom call for invited associates/benefactors to recap a year of being closed. I think they will be sharing bits of it over coming weeks on their social media channels. The big takeaways were A Christmas Carol returning this year and Groundhog Day (but no fixed date). Old Vic will reopen in June with a mix of live and digital work tbc at a later date.

When does his tenure end? I believe 2022 but who knows in this day and age? He also said doing "A Christmas Carol" via Zoom was the highlight of his career.

Yay it's been announced! Was wondering how long they were going to keep it a secret I do wonder how many little secrets we are all holding in. How many snippets of info or things we’ve been trusted with and hold in confidence? Things that matter...things that don’t...things that will come to fruition and things that will never lead to anything meaning you don’t trust what that person has told you. Its a funny old world.

Yes, must admit it didn't feel like much of a secret. I got the impression it was less of a "reveal" and more of an off-the-cuff comment by MW to segue into introducing Tim Minchin. I just wanted to share it with the group, even though details were vague and sketchy. Seems folk on this forum know the future schedule of OV productions before the artistic director himself!

It’s due to return summer 2020.
Will be glad to see it again, it was a great show and a shame it failed in NYC.
Edit- 2022 🤣

Great news this is returning.
Lots of musicals for the Old Vic, with Into The Woods and the Mark Knopfler musical. Was also hoping they do Present Laughter again with Andrew Scott.
The set is in some warehouse in Reading and was going to transfer to the Adelphi, but Waitress got there first.
I would suggest A Christmas Carol may become a regular Christmas production for the Old Vic, which is no bad thing as it’s a brilliant production. It is also coming back to Broadway this year and Los Angeles this Christmas. Could also be a regular thing on Broadway, as there is always a vacant theatre.

When is Into the Woods scheduled to open at the Old Vic? Would be a perfect holiday show after the diabolical (thanks Alex!) year we’ve always had.
Mr B...have you heard anything?

Both Woods and Day will have high running costs unlike a play with a smallish cast. Sadly, post Pandemic I suspect we'll get lots of plays
- I hope I'm wrong though

Sadly, post Pandemic I suspect we'll get lots of plays - I hope I'm wrong though Last night they hinted at a mix of live plays and digital content, confirmed A Christmas Carol this year and Groundhog Day (dates tbc). Into The Woods and Local Hero weren't mentioned but I think there will be a more commercial approach to business. Large benefactors have committed to OV so I see a more sustainable future based on what was said yesterday.

You're right, there are lots of musicals; Groundhog Day, Into The Woods, Local Hero. Also Martin Guerre was workshopped and there was talk of Pride and early on a Dennis The Menace musical (though I think the latter idea may have been abandoned). Also isn't Sylvia mean to be returning? Matthew Warchus revealed that they want Present Laughter to go to Broadway an interview with the New York Times last October, so doubt it would come back to the Old Vic first... but after this last year, who knows? As for Groundhog Day, I am so happy it's coming back and especially in the original production as I was expecting it would come back would be in a Bill Kenwright / Selladoor scale production on tour (which I probably still would've gone to see). I really hope it gets a better life here than it did on Broadway as it was really so underrated over there. I wonder who'll they'll get for casting this time?

I'm so pleased this is coming back. I saw that this thread had been updated but braced myself for disappointment as I've been fooled before so I was so happy to see proper confirmation that the show is returning even if it we don't know when yet. The pandemic has meant I have had to develop patience for theatre.
