Maybe the marchers will not be remembered in history as individuals. But you better believe that every history book that mentions Trump 50 years from now will mention the fact that he was so unpopular that he caused the biggest protest in US history to happen the day after his inauguration. The photos contrasting the crowds from the protests and the crowd at his inauguration will be placed side by side for decades to come. I believe there was something similar happened when Reagan began his Presidency. The protesters that day included a Whoopi Goldberg. As Reagan is considered to have done a job well done, those protesters are no more than footnotes. It was also ironic that the current Women's march was organised by a woman who supports Sharia Law and has expressed hatred for the Jewish people. Ah yes a job well done by Reagan, the man responsible for thousands of gay men dying.

No one cares about the attendance at the inauguration beyond. Not really. Those pictures do not prove anything as Trump won an election with millions voting for him in the process and he is clearly talking rubbish about how well it was attended. But no one really cares in the real World. What real people want is to be proved correct that they were right to vote for Trump and he fixes some very tough problems with America or, on the other hand, to be proven wrong with their fears about what a Trump presidency will be like (If anyone says that they want him to fail then they really are undeserving of the vote. We should never want our leaders to fail at great cost to the nation). No one real, however, does or should care about attendance at a ceremony held when most people are at work. The protesters will not only fade into insignificance individually but collectively too. History books will concentrate on his successes or failures as President and neither will be the result of those protesters. Also, I wish people would stop saying he is the most unpopular President since blah blah blah as if it is true and not just some silly mantra. He WON an election with millions of votes. Read that again and let it sink in... He WON an election with millions of votes. Keep telling yourself that no one cares. If no one cared it wouldn't have been reported on so much. Trump wouldn't have sent someone out to give an 'alternative fact' on how many people attended if he didn't care. And yes he is the most unpopular president in history. Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million, the most anyone has ever won by without becoming president. Thatcher won the popular vote. Trump did not. Big difference.

Right. "No one" cares so much about attendance at the inauguration that Sean Spicer ranted on about it with ridiculous photos.
I marched in NYC and I'm tired, but it was definitely reinvigorating for the long haul.

When I said he is considered to have done a job well done, I'm only reporting from media and other sources over the years, no need to shoot the messenger ;-) Yes, it was a very sad time. I remember a few years back watching the play, My Night With Reg. A great play, though very sad. I know he should have addressed Aids by at least speaking of it, I have no idea why he wasn't prompted to do so. One report on the Guardian has the LGBT blaming him for all the deaths of their community, but never mentions straight people who also died.........

Yes straight people also died and their deaths are no less tragic. Unfortunately for the people that died of any sexuality, the lack of attention paid to AIDS for years was largely down to homophobia, which is why I only mention the gay men, as well as the fact it wiped out entire communities of them.

Really great f**king job.

Where were the women's protests in the UK after the scandal of Rotherham was revealed?
Where are the continuous protests outside the Saudi embassy?
Some people genuinely have a right to protest against but for others it is merely the "in-thing" to be seen to be done and self-congratulatory bollocks.

Reagan the man who refused to even say the word 'AIDS' let alone do anything about it for years, until forced to. Yes, job really well done there I'd say. Not only allowing millions to die in your own country, but by not throwing the might of US research and pharmaceutical companies behind AIDS research, also slowing the worldwide fight against the disease via science down considerably. And causing millions more to die.
Along with an economic policy that did nobody any long term favours, and countless other social policies likewise.
I rarely read or hear anyone lauding Reagan as one of the greatest Presidents, aside from a few ardent supporters there at the time, blind to what he did as it somehow didn't affect them.
There's also a difference between protesting the outcome of an election for being unfair (in the sense of rigged and miscounted eg Bush) and protesting the ACTIONS of an elected official. Someone mentioned Thatcher further up, sure she could tell you a thing or two about that. Despite being re-elected. It's the essence of a democracy, the right to voice disagreement with the government's actions, and for the moment at least Trump is still in charge of a Democracy. So perhaps he is the one who should learn to just put up with it (or stop doing things that warrant protesting)

It gets more attention in 2017 as we're in the era of 24 hour rolling news which has to be filled but no one really cares....
Do you think people in 4 years' time will cast their vote with the attendance in mind or with Trump's success and failures? It is news for people who don't like in-depth news analysation.

As an additional note, as a former history teacher I can tell you that protests DO get taught in the history books. When we teach about world leaders and their actions the opposition to them gets included, because although we're not there yet, there is a conscious effort to teach the next generation a history that isn't just the history of white men. (I'm speaking as a British history teacher obviously I'm aware things are different elsewhere)

If you seriously think it will sway people either way you really shouldn't have the vote. Sorry, that's the harsh truth.
Well done for marching if you genuinely had something to protest about beyond "Trump won" (one woman interviewed said that she was marching as she found Trump repulsive looking!).

Do you even read the posts you're replying to - as 49thand8th said she's reinvigorated for the long haul. If the Democrats want to win in four years time (or two years time even) they need to energise their potential voters and this is a starting point not the only thing that's going to happen in the next 4 years. I'm sure you were just as dismissive of the many Tea Party protests weren't you?

I don't deny that, but I believe part of your rant was that nobody ever mentions protests again, which I think you're find is an 'alternative fact'. You only have to also look at documentaries about Thatcher or the Vietnam war to see that protesters do indeed make their way into historical record.
But on the flip side, it's funny how yes, your side of the argument has forgotten the disgustingly racists protests that followed Obama's appointment.

Again - can you read. This is not the only thing that's going to happen in the next 4 years. We have the same problem with the Labour party in the UK....
You can give all the political spiel and mantras you want but if you're not listening to the concerns of the people...

The people who protested over Obama's election because he was black are equally receiving of my disdain and ridicule as those who are protesting simply because Trump won. None deserve the vote.
If you are comparing the protests on Saturday to the decade long protest against Vietnam I wouldn't want to send any child of mine to the school you teach at. Sorry.
People do mention protests but have you read any biographies about Thatcher? It's hardly the bulk of the book, is it? More of a footnote.

I wouldn't want you raising children if you think taking part in peaceful protest means being denied the vote. But I wasn't directly comparing them in terms of their form or content, merely giving an example of protests as part of historical record. As we talked about Reagan above, the AIDS movement protests were also part of historical record of his presidency, and rightly so.
I always seek to engage in debate with people whose views are different to my own, because I genuinely believe we can learn from one another. However you've proven yourself to be closed minded and unwilling to engage in discussion so I'm not wasting my time or energy any further.

Normal for people of your political persuasion....
I will point out that this stubborn and closed minded individual told you that Trump would win and why he would too...
It's time for people like you to listen to the people.
2020 - Tory Landslide win and people like you played your part.... Thank you.

Wow what a brave prediction - it's not like they are miles ahead of the polls or anything. You also claimed that there would have been no protests if Hillary had won which is utterly absurd.

I saw a post on Facebook back in November from a woman who voted for Trump as she'd seen him on The Apprentice USA and thought he seemed like a good businessman. I marched (well, walked sedately) in London. I despise Trump and all he stands for. He won, he is President of the USA, but - my opinion - he has to know that he is being watched and judged on his actions, past, present and future. He seems to be a man of impulse - maybe, just maybe, being aware that people will act if he makes poor decisions, he will think twice before doing something reckless, stupid, dangerous. Then again, maybe not. But I don't feel my Saturday was wasted, whatever happens.
