That's great news. Also for Jessie Buckley. Never really think of her as a rising star as she has been around for years. Remember seeing her in A Little Night Music at the Menier and that has to be over 10 years ago. But suppose she is newish to films.

Pleased for Cynthia, but given it's voted for by the public, that award has Letitia Wright's name all over it as she's very widely known for Black Panther. She would be a deserving winner though.
Personally I'm rooting for Jessie Buckley - she gave one of the best performances I saw at the London Film Festival and seems to be a genuinely nice and down to earth woman as well!

There was enough material there to make costumes for a whole corps de ballet.

All she needed was a toilet roll to sit on.

I liked the dress, her hair was god awful though. She needs to fire her hair stylist immediately!

I liked the dress, her hair was god awful though. She needs to fire her hair stylist immediately! Or more correctly her wig maker. She has short hair. Unless she is like one of those tressie dolls where you turned a key and the hair grew. Just caught up on the Baftas and she had to hold the front of her dress up the whole time so it was totally impractical.

I'm surprised she even graced us with her presence since she has been in Hollywood!
I wonder if anyone has tweeted her about being in the Hercules musical? 😂😂

The hair was awful, the dress might have been ok if it hadn't been teamed with the hair, though I thought the neckline was deeply unflattering. I have to admit that (despite knowing it was Vera Wang couture) I thought the dress just looked a bit cheap compared to how well put together Leticia Wright and Jessie Buckley looked (to compare against nominees in the same category). I respect that Cynthia has a very wacky style, but it's not for me.
As an aside, she posted an Instagram story of her sister from last night - what a stunning dress she was wearing!

Seems like Cynthia is getting herself into trouble on Twitter again. 🙄 Seems like she delved into a discussion about African American voting and is getting called out for being anti- African American by some. I don’t think that’s the case, but I do think she needs to stop getting involved in conversations which she probably shouldn’t, and which she isn’t fully informed on!!

Same could be said for 99% of people on twitter and in forums - and then where would we be?

There was a flurry of activity against her, a backlash if you will about her casting in the 'Harriet' movie which seemed to peak with the debut of the trailer recently. This latest spat seems to have grown out of that one or at the very least be based in the same historical comments she is alleged to have made.
It will be a shame if the campaign gathers pace and damages the movie itself which is an important one however when it comes to award season the publicity machine will use anything to bring other movies down so their own can gain traction
Until these recently she seemed to have gone very quiet on social media, trouble is someone will always drag out something you said/tweeted ages ago to use against you!

Yeah there does seem to be a bit of an agenda against her by some. I don’t think Cynthia helps herself with her outspokenness at times, and she does have a habit of delving into situations she maybe shouldn’t. She’s not my cup of tea personality-wise but she’s extremely talented, and I’m sure she’ll be getting lots of love for Harriet. I don’t see the (as of now) minor controversy around her casting overshadowing the movie, but who knows with these thing s.

Wow. When I saw someone posting in this thread I thought "Oh, what's she said now?" But good for her. She's come a long way in the few years since I saw her in Liverpool playing Puck.

It's been announced that Cynthia is due to play Aritha Franklin in a film about her life. No, she’s due to play Aretha in Season Three of National Geographic’s GENIUS. The first season was about the life of Albert Einstein starring Geoffrey Rush, the second season was about Pablo Picasso starring Antonio Banderas and the third season will focus on Aretha Franklin starring Cynthia Erivo.

Sounds like a good series! I see the usual suspects are out on Twitter declaring it a travesty that an African-American is being played by a Brit...It's funny that no-one complained about Einstein being played by an Australian, though!

I can't find a single cinema in Tyne & Wear that is showing Harriet this week. So disappointed.

Yes, I missed out on seeing it too. But if Cynthia ends up getting an Oscar nod today it might make its way back into the cinema.
