Love Productions are a business, it's their job to get as much money as possible for their product. You can't blame them for that.
The problem is that the BBC is required to commission content from third-party producers, which means most of their hits can be poached when contracts come up for renewal. A government that wanted to protect the BBC instead of hobble it would be encouraging them to create content in-house, which they actually control, and can make additional revenue from when they turn out to be hits.

All the unnecessary bitching about Emma Rice and the somewhat more necessary bitching about Brexit, when the *real* crisis of leadership is going on over here.

I don't watch the show, but for those that do here is a statement from Mel and Sue...

Huge respect to Mel and Sue for not being the massive sell outs society expects and sticking by the BBC and not following the money. I like them even more than I did before.

I fear it may become bit commercial and just loose its vibe when it goes on channel 4. Is there anyway we can stop them from doing this?

Channel Four will exploit their purchase with a string of spin-offs, starting with a new Junior competition: Master Bake Off.
And a more skilled competition for limbless contestants: The Great British ParaBake Off.

Junior Bake Off already exists. Has done for some time now. On CBBC.

The BBC has referred to "breadxit". I don't know whether that was their creation, but if it was they'd do well to keep quiet about it.

I predict the Sewing Bee and that pottery programme getting rather more exposure. Mary Berry will stay with the BBC, Hollywood will go to CH4 where he'll be a big fish in a small pond. And after two series it will be over.

Absolutely gutted about Mel & Sue. But good for them for sticking with their morals. The production company have really come across as total greedy buggers. I think one person as host would pique my interest in watching it on C4 - Clare Balding. Her presenting on this year's Olympics/Paralympics has been outstanding.

Gutted. The (beginning of the) end for Bake Off.
Tough week for middle England. First Cameron resigns as an MP and now this. Not sure we'll cope

With this all coming in the news just now, it's almost taken something away from the actual programme...

There are more corners of the internet for theatre discussion than this little board, and the others are nowhere near as civilised as here. I envy you if you believe our conversations here are as bad as it gets.

Pinch of salt and all that (friend of a friend of a friend type of deal), but I heard that C4 want to rebrand it as a younger show and are looking to bring in Nadiya as a new judge.

With Mel and Sue gone, and I would imagine at least Mary Berry if not Hollywood as well, it's very reminiscent of Top Gear. Having a huge brand name with a dedicated following means nothing when you take the personalities out of it. As someone said on twitter earlier, Channel 4 have bought themselves a tent.

It'll probably work out worse for Love Productions. Channel Four Television Corporation has plenty of popular shows in its lineup and won't be too concerned if one flops. Love Productions, on the other hand, will be hurt quite badly if they end up with a flagship show that nobody wants to buy. If the show doesn't do well with new presenters then it could become a buyers' market.
On the other hand everyone predicted doom when Channel 4 became the broadcaster for the Paralympics in 2012, yet they turned out to do a fantastic job and brought the Games to the attention of the public in a way the BBC never did.
