So who's your favourite so far? (I keep reminding myself it's about the baking...)
I'm rather taken by young Andrew, who looks a little like our andrew judging from his profile pic. Biscuit week this week saw him with softness issues to start with. I spent the whole programme hoping he would firm up by the showstopper challenge, which he did. Last week it was revealed that he was some kind of engineer. This came as a surprise. This week it was revealed his main hobby is performing in musical theatre. This came as no surprise...
Who do we predict will be this year's winner?

I like Benjamina and Val so far. I can't remember many other names yet.

I think Val is skating on thin ice, if it wasn't for Louise's disaster I thought she would go!! Selasi is just the epitome of cool - though his Whirls were a bit of a disaster (being the baking expert that I am.....)
I also like Andrew and also he thought he looked exactly like our Andrew!! Star baker tonight (also trying to remember names!) I think is a very strong contender.

I'm just catching up with it after work now, I've had so many messages about this impostor-Andrew, who is uncomfortably extremely similar to me. Other than baking. The impostor is much better at baking.

The impostor is much better at baking. Just practise a few simple recipes and I'm sure you could get a few gigs. (See Maggie Philbin on French and Saunders.)

That poor woman who tried to depict her own future wedding in gingerbread. Oh my. Huuuuuuge error of judgement.

Team Benjamina here! Seeing all the structures collapse this week was so awful, I felt sorry for them!

I'm not declaring a favourite, that's a surefire way to see them go out the very next week. I do think they're an instantly very likeable bunch, I haven't taken strongly against anyone for no particular reason yet, and I like seeing the little hints of how well they get on with each other.
I think Kate is a strong contender though, I think she could very easily Frances her way through the whole competition to a quiet swallow-print victory.

I like the lad who looks a bit like Niall Sheehy but slightly less curly!
(Oh - it's meant to be about the baking??)

Turns out I went to Uni with Tom. I didn't recognise him because of all the weight he's lost also we didn't know each other very well.
What did everyone think of tonight's show?

How on earth do you burn raw dough? And is it just me or are we watching a 4th McGann brother?

Those dumplings looked really tricky - but quite fancy trying them.
I think tonight's episode was, however, a slip back from the 'back to basics' approach for the first couple of weeks. Plus I can't stand Paul during bread week. (or a lot of the time, if I am being honest)
I bought his book '100 Great Breads' and he includes a recipe for cheese straws using shop-bought puff pastry and also scones. I just don't rate him and his arrogance when it comes to bread really puts me off.
I am, however, still contemplating trying again to get on to the show. I did get to top 100 in year 2...

Too much going on with all those flavours in the bread. How about just BREAD?
Can't stand Hollywood and I agree he's especially up himself when it's bread week. He sells part baked bread in packets with his name on them at Waitrose. The reviews are decidedly mediocre.

I have tried his bread mixes - and they are probably the best I have tried over the years. But that hasn't changed my opinion of the man!

I've been following along by baking the technical challenge each week. When I made the Dampfnudeln yesterday I burnt the bottom of the pan... Be aware not to put too many into the pan (like I did) I squeezed the last two in and when they proved, the middle dumplings lifted away from the base and the poaching liquid, hence it boiling away to nothing and burning 😝

I don't dislike him as much as some of you and I like Mel and Sue using him as a butt for their jokes.

I'd forgotten that part of the challenge was nothing to do with baking- it was to resist the temptation to shove a bowl of cake/bread mix into Paul Hollywood's face as he goes around trying to discourage each contestant. Thank goodness we have Mary! And Mel and Sue (who we missed last week.)
Poor Michael... He needed a hug. I could almost picture you doing it, stanne!
Our andrew is doing rather well for us, I think. A shame this was all recorded before the famous badges were sent out.
That pout, together with the lipstick, not to mention the dimples and the threatened tears, look a bit scary. Watch out Hollywood!
Tip for Auntie Val: less Victoria Wood-style keep fit. A bit more baking. Poor love only won the dumpling round as all the others were raw.

Mary is lovely (I met her at my audition - when she admired my moist chocolate sponge)
Sue is also great - but does travel with a script writer who gives her all the good lines!!

Sue can do no wrong in my eyes! She is a Huge Kate Bush Fan! Not keen on her partner though... (Those silly sex programmes.)

Can't believe Val is still there. Go Val!

Val is a true home baker which is what this is supposed to be about, but sadly is no longer the case.
These people who turn up with a storybook full of pretentious, themed nonsense would be the first to be eliminated if I were judging. That Frances from a couple of years ago... cringe. Stick your caramel salted chocolate ganache in the shape of a cocoa bean where the sun dont shine love.
Nadya was good last year, not too perfect and some slightly dodgy choices. Seeing her cook a curry on the floor of a filthy paddle steamer in Bangladesh last week was a bit more down to earth.
