I'm currently enjoying the new Broadway cast recording of Hello Dolly and just discovered Bare, which I really like. Also revisiting the film soundtrack for Hairspray just because I love it so much!

Started listening to Great Comet recently and enjoyed it a lot. It's so different and very interesting to listen to. The harmonies are gorgeous and I can't believe it didn't win Best Orchestrations at the Tony's this year.

After I mentioned it on the Regent's Park thread, I put on the stage score for 'The Point'.
There are few artists I hold in higher esteem than Harry Nilsson - for reasons of songcraft, cheek, humour, swagger and a voice in a million - the score of the film version is a favourite, but this is an album I've rarely played as Nilsson's voice is such a huge absence. Davy Jones has his own charms, I suppose, but they're somewhat lesser. Really enjoyed some of the arrangements, particularly a funky take on Everthing's Got Em. Some of the songs added for the stage feel like padding, a couple are from elsewhere in Nilsson's back catalogue and welcome to hear (Gotta Get Up, Blanket For a Sail) even if they fall short of the originals.
Do think this could work if staged today, in the hands of a good orchestrator and good cast, obviously for kids, but the story and music are full of charm. Overall a livelier listen than I was expecting - the original has the feel of a bedtime story.

Today, I have very much enjoyed Randy Newman's excellent Faust, and found myself amazed that It's A Bird...It's A Plane...It's Superman ever somehow made it to the stage - "It's a satisfying feeling when you hang up your cape, to know that you've averted murder, larceny and rape'.

This weeks I mostly listened to Falsettos, Mystery of Edwin Drood and Spring Awakening. I also listened to Ordinary Days before I see it on Edinburgh Fringe next week.

After touting Bandstand on this board based on word of mouth, I finally got a chance to listen to it - and was disappointed. The orchestrations are better than the songs they're orchestrating. War Paint, in kind of the same retro genre, is much better. But I'm now more than ever convinced that the best new score on Broadway last season was Groundhog Day - head and shoulders above anything else.

At the end of the first series I was left wondering how long until producers makes the move to make Bombshell a reality. There were some really good songs in it, some a lot stronger than the current score of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory features. Whilst typing that, did some research and apparently its a thing and in the pipeline. No fixed timeline but rumoured to be coming to broadway. Also just discovered theres a Bombshell album out. Slow here. |

Honorable mentions:
The live German cast recording of Hunchback of Notre Dame is pretty damn fantastic. Hell Fire is very intense. The monks sound amazing in this recording.
The remixes to Dear Evan Hansen, though comical, are fun.
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is also pretty okay early Manken. Light musical meets operetta.
