The new Broadway recording of Sweeney Todd which unlike many others, I find disappointing. The sound mixing diminishes the power of the orchestra repeatedly.

I have to skip all the Mrs Lovett songs (which are some of the best) as I can't listen to the appaling London accent. It's even worse that Patti's which was bad enough. |

The sun is out and I'm going into the garden with a cup of tea to listen to today's downloads, Guys and Dolls, The Time Traveller's Wife and (not MT) but Luna by Anna Lapwood. She is the RAH organist who practices at night and has some great little videos on IG.

The sun is out and I'm going into the garden with a cup of tea to listen to today's downloads, Guys and Dolls, The Time Traveller's Wife and (not MT) but Luna by Anna Lapwood. She is the RAH organist who practices at night and has some great little videos on IG. I hadn’t heard of her, but she was just on the lunchtime news on the BBC. Some great clips of her playing. Will have to look that up. |

Just listening to Elaine Stritch At Liberty.
I saw this show at The Old Vic years ago and it was something to behold.
Well worth a listen to, it's a mixture of songs and fantastic stories from her career and very, very funny.

Those stories and the show, as a whole, is just priceless - it could even work as a piece of great theatre if anyone out there does a good Elaine Stritch. Those Ethel Merman stories are especially delicious. |

I keep saying it and I will continue to do so- Parade is a movie musical just waiting to happen! That would be amazing. I loved this revival and loved the original at Lincoln Center. It was the strangest audience experience ever. At the end of Act One the audience seemed frozen and unsure how to or whether to react. Listening to the feedback in the lobby at intermission was dramatic in itself with some hailing it as a masterpiece and others very upset about the subject matter being musicalised at all. Definitely in my top 5 and I hope London audiences get to see this thrilling revival...especially in these troubled times.... |

It is my understanding that to this day, in the southern states of America, such as Georgia, where the story is set, the name Leo Frank is still spoken in hushed tones.
Given that the Ku Klux Clan still exists and given the increasing rate on antisemitism, there are still a quite but very real rumbling of racism.
Also, the complexity of the multiple storylines; here you have a Jewish man, that never really fits in- who is always a bit of an outsider- the strength and determination of his wife, the political campaigning, a news reporter hungry for any tit bit of information, factory workers who are intimidated.
There is racism in the song sung by the servants, the little girls mother's court testimony "So I forgive you, JEW!"
Don't forget, although it's implied, we as the audience never find out who killed Mary Phagan.
This is an incredible piece of work.

The Alliance Theatre had actually been given an option to produce as an out-of-town tryout but the Board at that time would not allow them to go near it. A major funder or two who had gotten wind of it swore to pull their funding if it was produced. It then went to Lincoln Center who wisely mounted it. However, the first tour did come to Atlanta and was quite a success playing The Fox Theatre (4,600 seats) with lots of tickets sold to Jewish community groups. It is a story that, however heartbreaking, needs to be kept alive and learned from. |

I saw Cabaret with Jake Shears last week and have been re-listening to the West End soundtrack since then. I thought Jake was incredible and while Redmayne is great, I would love a cast recording with Jake and RLT!

Aw yes, once a month or so I play this album - so lovely to listen to hear her sing and tell such fantastic stories because (embarrassed) I was only familiar with her name when I heard that she’d died. I’m obsessed with Chess på svenska (2002)! Not that I can speak or understand Swedish but I don't need to, I can feel it all through the music and singing. Love this interpretation and Helen Sjoholm, just wow what a voice. Her delivery of Lämna inga dörrar på glänt (Nobody’s Side) is the best version I’ve ever heard. Tommy Korberg puts in a cracking performance too.

I’m obsessed with Chess på svenska (2002)! Not that I can speak or understand Swedish but I don't need to, I can feel it all through the music and singing. Love this interpretation and Helen Sjoholm, just wow what a voice. Her delivery of Lämna inga dörrar på glänt (Nobody’s Side) is the best version I’ve ever heard. Tommy Korberg puts in a cracking performance too. Helen Sjoholm has a fine voice and has been associated with both Denny & Bjorn for quite some time. She plays the female lead in Kristina in a concert version of the musical at Carnegie Hall, New York, on 23 and 24 September 2009. She sang as her previous title character while Russell Watson sang as Karl Oskar. Vocally, she was in Mamma Mia- Here we go again. In the scene where they're dancing at the party, she can be heard singing Hasta Mañana. She also sang extensively with Benny Andersonn's band. |

I found myself downloading the ‘Evita’ soundtrack the other day, mostly for David Cadicks’ magnificent arrangement of ‘Requiem’ which I remember smashing my ears in, sat in the Odeon West End many moons ago. It is glorious and absolutely ginormous. I’ve never seen it on stage as I wouldn't want it to disappoint.

I found myself downloading the ‘Evita’ soundtrack the other day, mostly for David Cadicks’ magnificent arrangement of ‘Requiem’ which I remember smashing my ears in, sat in the Odeon West End many moons ago. It is glorious and absolutely ginormous. I’ve never seen it on stage as I wouldn't want it to disappoint. The movie Requiem is absolutely gorgeous! IMO, the visuals don't quite hold up in person and I've never felt the chills of the vocals kicking in like I have on that recording. Still catches me off-guard sometimes, that brief diminuendo before it kicks in. |
