This week it's been The Matchgirls and The Most Happy Fella. It came as a surprise to me to realise that the former was written by Bill Owen of Last of the Summer Wine fame. It's a lovely little show.
Regarding the latter, Big "D" has turned out to be a rather unfortunate name for a musical number. ("Little A double L A S" is how it goes on.)

After seeing it's streaming next month, I'm listening to the Disenchanted soundtrack. It's catchy, but NSFW!

Still available from all good record shops. They're stood clutching each other behind a chain link fence. She's looking one way and he's looking t'other. I have that West Side Story album on vinyl

New Evanescence album means nothing else will get a look in now for at least a fortnight.

I'm listening to the 1992 studio recording of the King and I with Julie Andrews and Ben Kingsley. Lea Salonga is on there too.
This popped up on my Youtube, so I found the album afterwards (Apple music is really good for soundtracks!). I can't believe I didn't know it existed. She sounds fantastic as Anna.

Oh, Kay!
Randomly popped up on my Apple Music. Someone to Watch Over Me is the one that people will know, but there are a few nice ones and some fab piano playing.

I love the film and so listened to the cast recording a decent amount quite recently. Great opener and closer and a few gems in between but it feels like most of it needs to be heard in the context of the show to be fully enjoyed as there's not many individual songs that make for good listening without the rest of the narrative to back them up.

Ragtime is never far from my player.....such a masterpiece, and after Opera North's production last week, I'm going through my dozen or so copies of different recordings of Little Night Music.

I've been in the letter C—Caroline or Change and Company—in anticipation of seeing both these shows before year's end in NYC.

Bonnie & Clyde in preparation for the concert in January. Some good songs there and the first time I have listened to the full recording.

Sparked by a discussion that I can no longer find, I have been listening to ALW’s ‘Requiem’. What a magnificent piece it is. If I had his body of work it would be this I’d revive every couple of years in one off concerts etc. spine tingling.

I can't stop listening to A STRANGE LOOP. It has totally taken me by surprise and is an absolute winner. It has already won the Pulitzer (very rare for a musical that has yet to open on Broadway) and is the first musical awarded that prize written by a black author/composer. It opens on Broadway in April and I would imagine it will likely be the front-runner for the Tony. But this recommendation comes with a huge warning: This is not a show for the faint of heart. From a language/content perspective it makes "Book of Mormon" and "Jerry Springer The Opera" look like "Salad Days". Approach with caution but prepare to be addicted to some brilliant tunes with often hilarious lyrics. Website for the upcoming Broadway production is here: strangeloopmusical.com/

Today I've discovered Flying over sunset and my god it sounds amazing with lots of beautiful lush string and bits of woodwind and horn. Stunningly beautiful.

I’ve just spent twenty minutes looking for my ‘Notre Dame de Paris’ CD, fancying an hour of overwrought balladry whilst I drive my lad back to uni. I shall enjoy it thoroughly.

The new Assassins sounds good. I can't wait to get to know it more over the next few days. I know this is on Spotify, but can't seem to find it on Apple Music. Anyone know if it is currently/or is going to be on there? ASSASSINS is one of my favourite Sondheim's.

Apple Music seems to always be late with cast recordings, I remember the same with the new Caroline, or Change recording and I think Flying Over Sunset as well. Check back later today or tomorrow and it'll probably have updated.

And while I'm here, as for recordings I'm listening to, I don't think the new Assassins will be my go to because nothing will beat that original for me - I don't like Something Just Broke so that's a mark against any new recording, and I love the full November 22, 1963 sequence - so haunting - and having checked this new one it's only got the last couple minutes of it. And from what I've listened to, these voices just have so much less character to them, but I admit this is from a very cursory listen.
I have been listening to In The Green though, very interesting show. I'd watched some clips from it a while ago but didn't realise there was a cast recording until a few days ago. If you liked Islander for its use of a looping machine then check this out because it uses one to good effect. Lots of intricate harmonies and strange vocalisations. It's by Grace McLean, who people might know from Great Comet, and it's definitely got a similar avant garde kinda vibe. Favourite tracks if you want to get a feel for it first are I Am Hungry, Eve, and The Ripening.
