The Royal Exchange’s production of The Producers was one of the best musicals I’ve seen, so funny, and a fantastic production. West Side Story was a brave choice and was brilliant. Gypsy wasn’t too good in my opinion, very predictable. Guys and Dolls was ok, but a couple of disappointing performances in lead roles . I’d love to see another really good musical here, here’s hoping !

I hope they will return to a more mainstream musical like they have in years past. We did enjoy Betty though even without Maxine in it. Surely a more well known show will put more bums on seats and it won't really need a star name. I'm sure La Cage aux Folles was being lined up for the Christmas after Covid broke I suspect La Cage is out on the basis that Regent's Park might be hoping for a transfer after the summer

New shows announced:
A Taste of Honey Sweat The Importance of Being Earnest
Wonder who programmed this season? The two AD’s that have just left? Because this is more what I’d expect from the REx than what’s been on there until recently.

Have to say I’m disappointed. The Royal Exchange rarely hits the spot with me nowadays.

Oh, I'm up for all three of those. Last thing I saw at REx was Betty! A Sort of Musical - not the strongest production, but very enjoyable and interesting nonetheless. I quite often like their Christmas offering - The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart in 2021/22 was wonderful - but this year's Brief Encounter doesnt appeal (I'm not a big fan of the film except in parody).

I think the Octagon in Bolton has long since overtaken the Royal Exchange as the leading producing theatre in the North West.
Might give Earnest a try in the new season but will wait until the cast is announced before booking. Seeing Brief Encounter in a couple of weeks.

Season opens with Shed: Exploded View by Phoebe Eclair-Powell. Like the sound of this one (only) as the other 2 are familiar. However, whether I fancy a day trip to or weekend break in Manchester in February, and if so, whether the trains can be trusted, are other matters.

The writer won the Brentwood a prize for it some years ago. I recall her mother talking about it on the radio. RMT have settled today so just need ASLEF to do the same and things might get back to normal.

If you note, all of the upcoming plays - and even Brief Encounter - have very small casts.
I know they are short of money.
It has got quite expensive there - the top tier seats which are the cheapest seats aren’t the best as you are looking immediately downwards. I know they do a small number of ‘pay what you can seats’ but they tend to go quickly.
I used to be a season ticket holder before Covid & see all of the main house productions but I am a bit more selective now.

But always like seeing David Moorst. Just the thought of David Moorst playing Geoffrey makes me want to rescue him & give him a better life even more!
