There was obviously a contract in place - he woudnt have done the NYC press launch without it. My guess would be that he went back wanting more money and they said no. I wonder if 'terms' included a more prominent role. Given how long the show has been in pre production and they workshopped the new version of the show for NYC with him in it, i doubt he wanted a bigger part because he knew what he was getting into. His name above the title, maybe. BIB - Rannells disagrees with you! His full quotes is: Which reads rather as if there's a bit of bitterness there about his name having been announced before agreeing on terms. I agree with other posters that it's a shame because he was great in the role and it would have been wonderful to have him appear on a cast recording too, but it's not a role I can see being that difficult to recast. |

You don't do that for a show you're not contracted to be in. Why did he put himself out there as being in the show before the contract? He definitely went back to negotiate a better deal.

In fact, thinking about it legally, if there WAS a contract in place then he couldn’t just walk away, surely? They must have had some kind of agreement for him to do the launch, yes, but it can’t have been a legally binding contract. |

I really hope it doesn't close the production before it even opens as i've already bought my flights and tickets for November. But it's already a packed season for big female leads - Nicole in Sunset, Audra in Gypsy, Sutton in Mattress, Hilty and Simmard in Death Becomes Her, all the ladies in Old Friends and quite possibly Idina in Redwood, the leads in Smash, maybe even Betty Boop.

It was clear that no one was prepared for what he said on the red carpet, because people were then frantically taking down his bio from the website, ammending copy about the show, the Almieda took his name off the transfer page. You can rest assured that his leaving will not close this production nor will Tony competition from other leading actresses. The show can stand on its own merits and has a lot going for it. AR's leaving actually benefits the publicity/marketing of the show being able to now announce a new Jim along with the remainder of the cast. |

It was tactically worded with that small hint of irritation at the end, that's for sure; for all we know the events leading to this fallout may have been brewing and it was that moment that finally broke the last straw. It's not been professionally handled, either way. Sometimes higher-ups with balls do crazy things like put names on projects without the actor even agreeing beforehand in the hope they'd join either as a pressure tactic or because they're under the impression they'd be happy to do it anyways. It seems like the way it went was they billed his name, likely went through all the press events on good terms, and they've probably started talking proper contracts and someone's been short-changed, so it's over. That's it! |

That's it! Perhaps, but Mr Rannell's was not some fresh face to be dealt with by the producers. He was engaged with the show for some time which started its workshop phase in 2019. There was also quite a long gap between the Almeida run and the announcement of the Broadway production which had another workshop/redevelopment that he was part of. In short, it rings hollow that producers jumped the gun here given that Rannells was long involved with the show. Why would any actor commit/engage with a production for that long only to find themselves at the wrong end of negotiations at this very late stage of the game? I can't help but think that he wanted to renegotiate his deal and didn't get his way. At least that is what it looks like. They certainly didn't waste a second removing him from the website so it doesn't look like they want him back anytime soon or are willing to reconsider. |

I am hearing the same thing from other sources and it was pretty clear by their being no issued statement from the producers (and the fact that he was immediately removed from the show website), that the powers-that-be had no intention of keeping him around. They also wasted little time in announcing the replacement (in under 2 weeks) so more power to them. Borle is a great choice and I look forward to seeing what he will bring to the show. I liked Rannells a lot but agree with others that his Jim Bakker was pretty much the same as his performance as Elder Price. I did think his dig at the producers on the red carpet was very self-serving and tasteless. He appeared at the press launch, offered his credentials and name announcing his casting on the website then months later blamed them for making assumptions that he agreed to the role. That didn't add up. |
