Ugh. Really? Thought Wainwright was classier than that.

Most of his music demands a vocal flexibility and range of someone like Audra McDonald. I'm interested to see what they're planning.

Shirley Valentine was a massive hit, so I imagine this will be the same, whatever it is

I actually read a post by the producer last week that said every seat and every standing position for the whole run was sold and all costs recouped. Plus it made a 96% profit for investors. Funny Girl at the Menier was the fastest selling musical ever. Tickets went on sale at midnight and by 9am the whole run had sold out. Plus the run at the Savoy was a huge success.

I am not sure the run at the Savoy counts as an unqualified success. It didn't exactly pass without incident

Considering the creatives involved, this is going to be stupid money and im not paying that for la Smith. I wonder if a cinema broadcast will happen ...

From Mark's link: "When she witnesses the death of a young fan shortly after giving her an autograph at the first preview, Myrtle starts to confuse real life with theatre. She cannot rid herself of the images of the accident and her role becomes associated with the death of Nancy, with whom she identifies. Myrtle regularly brings the girl back to life in her imagination: perhaps this way she will master her role in the play".
I'm getting vibes of 'Annabel, the musical' by Mr G.

Incidentally, "Opening Night" was also the inspiration for Ruth Wilson's 24 hour one woman show in May, "The Second Woman," which is the title of the play within the play, during the previews of which the main character starts to lose her bearings.

It's never stopped Andrew Lloyd Webber when writing for female voices in the past! Rufus writes songs that tend to stretch his own vocal abilities to the limit, so I doubt he'll give Sheridan an easy time. Besides, nobody knows what the project is yet.

So, a musical version of one of any number of channel 5 9pm ‘on every night this week’ dramas, that plague our very existence?
Great. I’m normally dribbling on the sofa by half nine, so not for me ta.
