I stopped listening after "they didn't like the Eurocrats in Brussels calling the shots". That was never the case; we've always had as big a hand as anyone else in shaping EU laws/regulations/trade policies, we have always been represented in the European Parliament, and EU law has never been something that was simply imposed upon us from above. I assume her (laughably wooden) piece goes downhill from there.

Phantom, you make a good point about a referendum on EU was a mistake during a period of austerity. The Westminster Bubble ! And I share your concern that going for a second Ref would spark violence but then they tell us that the Leave voters have 'one foot in the grave' so maybe it won’t be so bad. Mind you, a Zimmer frame wielded well could cause damage. Sorry to sound flippant. Black humour.....

Apparently Feb 18 is “sh*t or get off the pot” day.
In other words if there is no deal by then, it’s No Deal.
Source: close personal in a reasonably senior position in the FO, based in France.
Don’t quote me, he’s been wrong before. It’s very interesting to hear (unofficially) what’s going on in the background though.

That's a start, but it's outrageous and indefensible that EU citizens are being asked to apply to retain the right to stay in a country they moved to legally, where they've built lives, paid taxes, contributed to their communities. Waiving the fee is a step in the right direction, but the whole process stinks.

I don’t get that either. They must be paying tax, or rent or council tax or have registration with a GP. I dunno, maybe not.

I'm always banging on about this and can't second your comments strongly enough. It's possibly the single most hateful thing about this entire mess. Plus, when you have to APPLY for something, there is the implication you might not succeed. It's a distillation of the lack of basic humanity that's infecting politics and political discourse.

That's a start, but it's outrageous and indefensible that EU citizens are being asked to apply to retain the right to stay in a country they moved to legally I find it horrifying that there was ever any question that they should be allowed to stay at all, and it sickens me that there are still many people who think they shouldn't. This is obviously very far from the first time that people have decided that they want to rid their society of those they deem undesirable, and there's never been a time when those people haven't been viewed as utterly vile in retrospect. I dread to think how future historians will view this period in Britain's history, but given how we now view some of the events of the last couple of hundred years I'm pretty sure what they'll be saying.

I was discussing this recently, that we are handing those historians some dense material. There will be rich pickings when it comes to papers, theses, books and analyses as they ponder what the dementedly pirhouetting f*ck we were doing.

The issue of settled status just stinks for me. You have people who make contributions both economically and culturally to this country who have to apply to now stay in this country is wrong. These people have done more over the years to ensure vital services keep on running as well as socially enriching this country than the idiots who are currently running (allegedly) this country have ever done. Maybe it’s those currently in Westminster who need to leave the country. I’m certain we would be better off without them.
I think for future historians and other social and political commentators, looking back on the Brexit fiasco, I think it would safe to say that they will probably think that this wasn’t this country’s finest hour.

Okay.
Now’s the time for panic.
Parliament says it wants a deal but the only deal that can pass is one that has no chance of being agreed to.
Anyone any ideas as to how we can take back control from parliament?

It’s a non-binding vote and frankly, the biggest indication we are heading for an actual no-vote.

It’s a non-binding vote and frankly, the biggest indication we are heading for an actual no-vote. There are forces massing to stop that. Look at the headlines we are now getting every day, then imagine that times a hundred and that pressure will be applied to every single MP the closer we get. Either parliament caves or the actions taken against them will be quick and ruthless. n.b. there doesn’t need to be a no vote, all it needs for no deal is for no other option to be agreed by parliament and the EU.

Honda in Swindon is to close its plant, with a loss of a massive 3,500 jobs and the knock on to secondary jobs, similar to Nissan in Sunderland not going to make a model in the UK.
EU signs a trade deal with Japan, so just maybe a clue there.
Ironically Swindon and Wiltshire voted to leave, this was urged by their Conservative Brexit backing MP Justin Tomlinson, hope he doesn't have the audacity to stand in the next general election.

Thank you, made me smile. Love the way they get 'Ref er en dum' rhythm. There will never be another referendum ( nope not even for ready money) in the U.K. and perhaps we should thank him for that. Nothing else, nothing.

How about we just don't leave the EU and we pretend this whole mess never happened. It's just such a mess right now, you can't blame alot of people, myself included, for giving up on the whole thing.

I find it much easier now I don't watch the 24-hour news cycle - to begin with it used to surprise me how little things changed in a week. Now, from a distance, it feels like a desperation to feed narratives with twists and turns regardless of significance.
Much happier now without a screen full of people running around with their hair on fire pretending every last statement by anyone is *crucial*.
