Surely the longer that Sara Brightman stays away- regardless of the reasons- this reflects upon her as an unreliable performer?
There is no doubt that vocally Tina Arena* can perform this however, personally, I don't this she's right.
Despite her success in France and her experience, from personal observation- I have seen her in a professional production of Nine and other smaller shows, I have also seen her after shows and Ms Arena is too 'rough' round the edges.
*True fact: I have an Uncle who was born very late in my grandmother's life who is only a few years older than me and Tina Arena made her First Holy Communion with him.

I've always liked Arena as a recording artist and concert performer but I don't think the voice (despite it's many qualities) is right for the part.

The theatre informed us that Sarah Brightman was off due to injury after coming all away from Canada (21 hour flight) to see her (the vacation to Australia was great but seeing Sarah was to be the highlight as we saw her perform before in concert). We thought Sarah would be great in this role - a different take on a character is fine. if she is really injured I hope she recovers quickly but it sounds like from here that her injury may be due to bad reviews of the show. I mean yeah bad reviews would be tough to receive and would be hurtful but where is the respect to the fans that did want to see her and looked forward to her performance. What happened to the saying 'the show must go on". I lost respect for this performer.

Sarah hasn’t performed in WEEKS now and the theatre is only making matters worse by refusing to answer customer inquiries and ignoring emails sent from people who are desperately trying to figure out international travel. It actually boggles my mind that this is being handled as horribly as it is.

Anyway the whole hoo-hah has certainly caught TB's imagination. International threads don't usually get anywhere near 9 pages..... Is there an Aussie version of TB where we can see what the locals are saying!? Sadly the forum at Aussie Theatre was shut down years ago. The Facebook page Musical Fans Australia is so worried about upsetting any one, unless you blow smoke in a productions rear end, you can’t say a negative thing. I said I hated Dear Evan Hanson and the post was removed because it might upset the upcoming cast. I commented that you could see the stage hands on the recent production of Grease and it was removed because it was classed as negative to the cast and producers who might have been upset |

As the theatre going public we ARE allowed opinions!!! Not everything is five star award winning theatre. Evaluation, reviews and respectful opinion should be promoted not redacted. Plus people need to see shows and even performers as brands and businesses - it's nothing personal when giving criticism or saying something doesn't work or needs improvement!!! |

I got blocked from one because I mentioned that the box seats were rather vertiginous (as a warning for potential buyers) and it was taken as negative! |

I think you find Brightman is not in the country anymore. As at tonight they are still selling tickets for Sydney season with SB's name attached. Looking at random dates, not sold out but probably about 70% sold , and mostly the $$ seats. |

That 72 hour fire sale is very telling. Sadly I’m away for the next 11 days in the South Pacific on a cruise. Than straight back into a work trip, not sure if I can make any of it work.

“The star attraction in Melbourne's tent-pole production of Sunset Boulevard, the world's bestselling soprano Sarah Brightman, has not performed for two weeks and Opera Australia won't confirm when she will return.
The show, which opened on May 29 to mixed reviews of both the production and Brightman herself, marked her highly anticipated return to the stage after a 34-year absence.
Many fans purchased tickets for the performance because of Brightman's inclusion, some travelling from outside Melbourne, only to be told once they were in their seats that she would not be
appearing. Brightman has not performed since
June 9.
In a statement to The Age on June 17 Opera Australia said: "Ms Brightman has unfortunately suffered a torn calf muscle which has ruled her out of performances until she has recovered sufficiently to be able to move about the stage freely as is required for the role of Norma Desmond. She is undergoing treatment and is hoping to return to the stage this week."
That statement was provided nine days ago and Brightman has not since returned to the stage.
Despite missing 12 consecutive scheduled appearances, no public announcement has been made, and Brightman continues to receive star-billing.
Asked this week whether Brightman's return was uncertain, if measures were being put in place to facilitate her returning to the production, and whether the upcoming Sydney season of Sunset Boulevard will be affected, Opera Australia said:
"Ms Brightman is continuing her recovery and will return to the stage when she is well enough to perform the role of Norma Desmond.
"We won't be making any further comments except to say how proud we are of the cast who have continued to play to standing ovations and rapturous applause."

Horrible attitude to paying audiences. No apology, just double down and try to make out people should be grateful that there’s any kind of show so stop your criticising. Totally expected though, sadly.

How many shows has she actually performed in this production? Agreed: very unprofessional behaviour and communication. I think anywhere else this would have resulted in a massive sh*t storm.

She performed the whole of the first 3 weeks without missing a single one of her shows (from 21st May until the 9th of June) even, reportedly with respiratory tract infections during some of the earlier shows. After that, nothing for the last two weeks. The silence was shocking, both from the production and from Sarah and her team. I suppose Opera Australia has addressed it a few days ago according to the article, but nothing was posted online to quell speculation. |
