I don't massively understand the "it's been done before" argument as to why this isn't creative.
Taking it to extremes everything has been done before! Story told through song? Done before. Actors on a stage? Done before. Band in a pit? Done before. Interval in the middle? Done before.
Yeah, this sounds daft I know, but really, there isn't much that hasn't been done before in some way.....
Whether other directors have "done if before" or not doesn't IMHO change the fact that it's easily the most creative production of Sunset Boulevard I have seen since the original! And even if it has been done before conceptually, said concepts can still be applied well or badly and here it is absolutely exemplary.

Maybe Tom should update the lyrics dynamically depending on the circumstances of the Strand at the time: Rainy Boulevard Chilly Boulevard Crowded Boulevard Tourist Boulevard Drunken Boulevard etc

Can someone explain to an oldie what "meta" means that seems to be used a lot in this thread? I thought it was the new name for Facebook that no one uses so presume it means something else. Thanks "Meta" refers to information about information. Anyone using it differently is likely being a tad pretentious. It comes from the computer programming world where data values are either explicitly defined or there is metadata that helps set the rules as to how the data values are determined. For example, a customer name could be taken from a particular column of a particular table, or it could be taken from column x of table y, where the values x and y are variables. x and y are metadata looked up or derived elsewhere.

"It comes from the computer programming world..."
What about "meta" in "metaphysics" and "metaethics"?

"It comes from the computer programming world..." What about "meta" in "metaphysics" and "metaethics"? "metaethics" doesn't appear to have made Chambers yet, so possibly quite new. Both are seemingly used in a similar sense, i.e. being about the principles underlying the thing to which they prefix.

Whether, in the sense being discussed, i.e. information about information, it was first applied to "data" or "physics", I don't know, but it's the same meaning. I'd be surprised if the current popularity of the term "meta" has not transitioned from online geekery.

If Shakespeare made a comeback (nay, a return), no doubt he would do so in iambic pentameta.

I’ve had a bit of time to compose my thoughts on seeing this last night. Most theatre shouldn’t be museum pieces, it is great to mix it up. I won’t debate whether what Jamie Lloyd has done here is really new or stolen or whatever but it was definitely a new take on the piece and something I have never seen before. Apparently there is no cast board so I have to trust West End Understudies on Twitter to know who I saw. I believe there were 2 covers in, impressive in all the movement pieces!
I hope I won’t stray too far into spoilers but this far into the thread I doubt I am saying anything that hasn’t been said before. I loved the pretty bare stage but great use of technology. The camera mount as a steering wheel could seem a bit odd but it all brought the 2 worlds together - the actual characters and their performance. The comparison between older and younger Norma on screen was especially effective for me. I didn’t get used to max feeling so young. I’d always thought of him as a generation above Norma. All the performances were superb. I’d previously seen Nicole in Cats and wondered if this was too big a step up but last night she was Norma. She really delivered. I am back for Rachel in a few weeks and am glad I have a second Nicole date too. The big numbers were really big and luckily not ruined by the whooping I had feared from a Saturday evening audience.
Of course I loved the act 2 opener and will be looking for little differences on my future visits. I know it’s live but even little things like the strand Christmas lights being on!
Overall I loved it. I can’t quite place my finger on it but I’d say it’s a 4.5 for me. Maybe it’s because ATG couldn’t be bothered to deliver my very expensive pre ordered interval ice creams? I didn’t want to mark it down to 4 so have still voted 5. I’m in the front row keyworker seats next time so that will be a different experience.

Just booked stalls centre of row E through TKTS for £70.50 to see Rachel Tucker tonight, it was one of four that went on sale at midnight.
Definitely a good deal as the ATG / Savoy price is £175 and See Tickets - who actually supplied the ticket - are charging £294 on their website.
The three adjacent to mine are still available as I type this at 1am, plus six in stalls row L for £50.50.

Received my brochures from Theatreshop this morning - very impressed with their speed and customer service (and no, I am not affiliated). Great to see a business so customer focused.

Just purchased mine but, when I went to the payment screen, someone else’s name, address, telephone number and email address were populating the billing and shipping details, someone in Cardiff and I’m in Manchester. I deleted them and changed to mine to process my order - thought it a bit odd though. The site seems very basic but good to hear of the good service previous members have received.

I hope they have the brochure in merch store in late November. Are they still selling the other programme or just brochure now?

Worrying panda experience of other data on the payment address details on the theater shop site but have checked and the site does come up as a https and padlocked site and no warnings came up on mobile or PC that it was possible security issue and ceebee feedback seems to show its all OK.

Im sure I’ll be the very last to the party on this but I’ve just been watching a pretty decent full length video of the second Sydmonton try out in 1992. Not the very first one with Ria Jones and Michael Ball but Patti’s unofficial audition for Norma with Kevin Anderson. Google “Jeff smith sunset blvd”. Who is Max in this?

Trading websites say it's Daniel Benzali, but I don't think so, he joined the cast shortly before rehearsals started at the Adelphi. Kevin Colson played Max in the first workshop (with Ria) but it's not him either. I think they had a really hard time casting Max, Trevor Nunn even went to Germany and Austria to see if he could find someone Erich-von-Stroheimesque enough
